A bounded nonlinear dynamic controller suitable for the regulation of the duty-ratio input of a three-phase AC/DC voltage source converter (VSC) is proposed. The controller design is based on the complete nonlinear average model of the power converter and takes into account that the controlled inputs -duty-ratio signals- should be saturated in a disk area on the input phase portrait while the grid voltages constitute the uncontrolled inputs. The proposed design approach fully satisfies the input constraint while simultaneously achieves precise DC bus voltage regulation and unity power factor operation. In addition, opposite to the conventional controllers, the present development is totally independent from the system parameters. A detailed nonlinear analysis shows that the closed-loop system operating under the uncontrolled external inputs has the input to state stability (ISS) property while the analysis is further extended to prove convergence to the desired nonzero equilibrium when constant external inputs act on the system. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the controller under sudden DC bus voltage reference and load variations.

Investigation of the Impact of the Upstream Induction Zone on LIDAR Measurement Accuracy for Wind Turbine control Applications using Large-Eddy Simulation

Several sources of error exist in lidar measurements for feedforward control of wind turbines including the ability to detect only radial velocities, spatial averaging, and wind evolution. This paper investigates another potential source of error: the upstream induction zone. The induction zone can directly affect lidar measurements and presents an opportunity for further decorrelation between upstream wind and the wind that interacts with the rotor. The impact of the induction zone is investigated using the combined CFD and aeroelastic code SOWFA. Lidar measurements are simulated upstream of a 5 MW turbine rotor and the true wind disturbances are found using a wind speed estimator and turbine outputs. Lidar performance in the absence of an induction zone is determined by simulating lidar measurements and the turbine response using the aeroelastic code FAST with wind inputs taken far upstream of the original turbine location in the SOWFA wind field. Results indicate that while measurement quality strongly depends on the amount of wind evolution, the induction zone has little effect. However, the optimal lidar preview distance and circular scan radius change slightly due to the presence of the induction zone.

Aircraft Electric Power systems (EPS) route power from generators to vital avionic loads by configuring a set of electronic control switches denoted as contactors. In this paper, we address the problem of designing a hierarchical optimal control strategy for the EPS contactors in the presence of system faults. We first formalize the system connectivity, safety and performance requirements in terms of mathematical constraints. We then show that the EPS control problem can be formulated as a Mixed-Integer Linear Program (MILP) and efficiently solved to yield load shedding, source allocation, contactor switching and battery charging policies, while optimizing a number of performance metrics, such as the number of used generators and shed loads. This solution is then integrated into a hierarchical control scheme consisting of two layers of controllers. The high-level controller provides control optimality by solving the MILP within a receding horizon approach. The low-level controller handles system faults, by directly actuating the EPS contactors, and implements the solution from the high-level controller only if it is safe. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Global output feedback stabilization for a class of nonlinear planar systems with output-dependent growth rates

In this paper, we consider the global output feedback stabilization problem for a class of nonlinear planar systems under a more general growth condition. The nonlinearities in such a system are bounded by both lower-order and higher-order terms with an output-dependent growth rate. This problem is solved by integrating the feedback domination technique and a novel dual observer approach, where two individual observers are constructed in parallel with one estimating the linear part of the unmeasurable state and the other estimating the higher-order part. Moreover, the presented observers and the output feedback controller all have nonlinear gains. Simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed stabilization scheme.

Underwater Target Positioning with a Single Acoustic Sensor

The availability of reliable underwater positioning systems to localize one or more vehicles simultaneously based on information received on-board a support ship or an autonomous surface vessel is key to the operation of some classes of AUVs. Furthermore, there is considerable interest in reducing the number of sensors involved in acoustic navigation/positioning systems to reduce the costs involved and the time consumed in the deployment, callibration, and recovery phases. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper we address the problem of single underwater target positioning based on measurements of the ranges between the target and a moving sensor at the sea surface, obtained via acoustic ranging devices. In particular, and speaking in loose terms, we are interested in determining the optimal geometric trajectory of the surface sensor that will, in a well defined sense, maximize the range-related information available for underwater target positioning. To this effect, an appropriate Fisher Information Matrix is defined and its determinant is maximized to yield the sensor trajectory that maximizes the accuracy of the target position estimate that can possibly be obtained with any unbiased estimator. It is shown that the optimal trajectory depends on the relative velocity of the sensor, the sampling time between measurements, and the number of measurements acquired for the FIM computation. Simulation examples illustrate the key results derived.

In this paper we study state-space realizations of Linear and Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. Motivated by biochemical reaction networks, Gonçalves and Warnick have recently introduced the notion of a Dynamical Structure Functions (DSF), a particular factorization of the system's transfer function matrix that elucidates the interconnection structure in dependencies between manifest variables. We build onto this work by showing an intrinsic connection between a DSF and certain sparse left coprime factorizations. By establishing this link, we provide an interesting systems theoretic interpretation of sparsity patterns of coprime factors. In particular we show how the sparsity of these coprime factors allows for a given LTI system to be implemented as a network of LTI sub-systems. We examine possible applications in distributed control such as the design of a LTI controller that can be implemented over a network with a pre-specified topology.

Unlike triple-polarized antennas, dual-polarized antennas can be easily implemented into thickness limited devices and thus have received much attention recently. Dual-polarized antennas have the potential to double the channel capacity in comparison with an omnidirectional single-input single-output (SISO) system. However, in real three-dimensional (3D) scenarios, dual-polarized antennas cannot capture the arriving power from the third polarization direction, which is orthogonal to the two-dimensional (2D) polarization plane. This will lead to power loss, which may significantly affect the resultant channel capacity. By proposing a novel two-sphere single-bounced geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) and rigorously analyzing the change of polarization after single-bounced scattering, this paper studies the impact of the power loss on the channel capacity and specifies the conditions under which the channel capacity of dual-polarized systems is even worse than that of omnidirectional SISO systems. Not only that this is the first endeavor on this subject, but also this work is of practical importance in guiding appropriate deployment of dual-polarized antennas in real 3D indoor scenarios.

One of the central problems in computer vision is the detection of semantically important objects and the estimation of their pose. Most of the work in object detection has been based on single image processing and its performance is limited by occlusions and ambiguity in appearance and geometry. This paper proposes an active approach to object detection by controlling the point of view of a mobile depth camera. When an initial static detection phase identifies an object of interest, several hypotheses are made about its class and orientation. The sensor then plans a sequence of viewpoints, which balances the amount of energy used to move with the chance of identifying the correct hypothesis. We formulate an active M-ary hypothesis testing problem, which includes sensor mobility, and solve it using a point-based approximate POMDP algorithm. The validity of our approach is verified through simulation and experiments with real scenes captured by a kinect sensor. The results suggest a significant improvement over static object detection.

Single intersection is generally regarded as the elementary unit for solving traffic problem. A Type-2 fuzzy logic controller (T2FLC) for single intersection signal control is presented in this paper as Type-2 fuzzy logic can handle the imprecision, uncertainties and vagueness lying in the dynamic process more efficiently. Furthermore, the membership function parameters of Type-2 fuzzy logic controller are optimized by genetic algorithm (GA). Simulation experiments are designed to compare the queue length and vehicular average delay of Type-2 fuzzy control optimized by GA with general Type-2 fuzzy control, Type-1 fuzzy control and fixed-time control under various types of vehicle arrival rate. Experimental results indicate that our proposed control method can reduce the queue length and vehicular delay at the intersection effectively and thus demonstrates its superiority.

This paper addresses the optimal control of multiple linear agents in the presence of a set of adversary constraints. This type of constraints makes the convergence of the agents' dynamics towards the "natural" equilibrium position, impossible to fulfill. Therefore, this default equilibrium point has to be replaced by a set of equilibrium points or even accept the existence of limit cycles. Furthermore, the constraints introduced in the transitory optimization problem are non convex. The present paper proposes a dual-mode control strategy which switches between an unconstrained optimum controller and a constrained control law whenever the adversary constraints are activated. The proposed method builds on invariance concepts and proves to be related to eigenstructure assignment problems. The technique exhibits effective performance and is validated here by an illustrative example.
