In this paper we assess the incidence of strategic behavior of demand and supply units in market set ups which should enable the efficient in-feed of renewable energy sources. Therefore, a sequence of energy and reserve power auctions is modeled in an agent-based framework in order to approximately come up with the drawbacks of the different market designs. The main focus lies on the reserve power market. The generation companies as well as representative consumers are facilitated with Q-learning in order to exploit market flaws. The representative network includes a renewable in-feed, which is characterized by low marginal generation costs. In terms of congestion management, we assume in a first step uniform marginal pricing, in a second step nodal pricing for the energy power auction.

Impulse response estimation with binary measurements: a regularized FIR model approach

FIR (finite impulse response) model is widely used in tackling the problem of the impulse response estimation with quantized measurements. Its use is, however, limited, in the case when a high order FIR model is required to capture a slowly decaying impulse response. This is because the high variance for high order FIR models would override the low bias and thus lead to large MSE (mean square error). In this contribution, we apply the recently introduced regularized FIR model approach to the problem of the impulse response estimation with binary measurements. We show by Monte Carlo simulations that the proposed approach can yield both better accuracy and better robustness than a recently introduced FIR model based approach.

The use of remote laboratories has become a common technique in universities to provide educational services related to engineering. However, the development efforts of these laboratories have not been contemplated in a structured way, with no specific methodologies that allow the reuse of such laboratories or parts thereof. This problem of structured and methodological development is associated with a number of disadvantages which imply that the development of new labs or their integration with other services is a complex task. This paper shows how this goal can be achieved using RELATED (REmote LAboratories exTendED). It is shown the development model proposed by this methodology, as well as the services provided by this development framework. The article shows an example of application of this methodology, using a magnetic levitation system, which is prepared for “on-site” experiences. From this laboratory, and following specific methodological steps, is shown as is possible to reuse developed code and provide a set of remote experiments for the magnetic levitation system.

After a general introduction of the VIKING EU FP7 project two specific cyber-attack mechanisms, which have been analyzed in the VIKING project, will be discussed in more detail. Firstly an attack and its consequences on the automatic Generation control (AGC) in a power system are investigated, and secondly the cyber security of State Estimators in SCADA systems is scrutinized.

The implementation of automated regulatory control has been around since the middle of the last century through analog means. It has allowed engineers to operate the plant more consistently by focusing on overall operations and settings instead of individual monitoring of local instruments (inside and outside of a control room). A similar approach is proposed for cyber security, where current border-protection designs have been inherited from information technology developments that lack consideration of the high-reliability, high consequence nature of industrial control systems. Instead of an independent development, however, an integrated approach is taken to develop a holistic understanding of performance. This performance takes shape inside a multi-agent design, which provides a notional context to model highly decentralized and complex industrial process control systems, the nervous system of critical infrastructure. The resulting strategy will provide a framework for researching solutions to security and unrecognized interdependency concerns with industrial control systems. © 2012 IEEE.

Animals use stochastic search strategies to find a potential nest or to localize the food source. Animals do not rely much on the environmental cues or their sensory inputs. Since their cognitive capabilities are rather limited, search strategies are usually simplistic and stochastic. And yet such simple search strategies result in high efficiency in finding potential targets in limited time intervals. Similar problems with perception of the environment and limited computational power and sensory inputs are observed on the mobile robots used in search scenarios. In spite of their limitations, such robotic systems usually perform deterministic search strategies which heavily depend on environmental cues and sensory input. The research question we are addressing in this paper is which stochastic search strategy has the best performance in terms of area coverage and can stochastic search strategies outperform deterministic search strategies.

In this paper we propose a decentralized nonlinear controller that has the ability to enhance the transient stability and achieve voltage regulation simultaneously for multimachine power systems. This paper extends the existing work on the construction of TS fuzzy model using linearly independent functions from nonlinear systems. This approach is based on Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy controller via parallel distributed compensation (PDC) method. The stability analysis and control design problems can be reduced to linear matrix inequality (LMI) problems. Based on only local measurements, the designed fuzzy state feedback controller guarantees stability and satisfies desired transient responses. The proposed controller is applied to two-generator infinite bus power system. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the developed approach regardless of the system operating conditions.

Hybrid zero dynamics extends the Byrnes-Isidori notion of zero dynamics to a class of hybrid models called systems with impulse effects. Specifically, given a smooth submanifold that is contained in the zero set of an output function and is invariant under both the continuous flow of the system with impulse effects as well as its reset map, the restriction dynamics is called the hybrid zero dynamics. Prior results on the stabilization of periodic orbits of the hybrid zero dynamics have relied on input-output linearization of the transverse variables. The principal result of this paper shows how control Lyapunov functions can be used to exponentially stabilize periodic orbits of the hybrid zero dynamics, thereby significantly extending the class of stabilizing controllers. An illustration of this result on a model of a bipedal walking robot is provided.

In this paper, a hierarchical neural network with cascading architecture is proposed and its application to classification is analyzed. This cascading architecture consists of multiple levels of neural network structure, in which the outputs of the hidden neurons in the higher hierarchical level are treated as an equivalent input data to the input neurons at the lower hierarchical level. The final predictive result is obtained through a modified weighted majority vote scheme. In this way, it is hoped that new patterns could be learned from hidden layers at each level and thus the combination result could significantly improve the learning performance of the whole system. In simulation, a comparison experiment is carried out among our approach and two popular ensemble learning approaches, bagging and AdaBoost. Various simulation results based on synthetic data and real data demonstrate this approach can improve the classification performance. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

There is increasing interest in the use of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to substantially improve the means available for ocean exploration and exploitation. A key element in the operation of certain classes of AUVs is the availability of good underwater positioning systems to localize one or more vehicles simultaneously based on information received on-board a support ship or a set of autonomous surface vehicles. In an interesting operational scenario, the set of autonomous surface vehicles carries a network of acoustic units that measure the elevation and azimuth angles between the target and each of the receivers. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper we address the problem of determining the optimal geometric configuration of an acoustic sensor network at the ocean surface that will maximize the angle-related information available for underwater target positioning. It is assumed that the angle measurements are corrupted by white Gaussian noise, the variance of which is distance-dependent. Using the Cramer-Rao lower bound inequality, the trace of the inverse of the Fisher Information matrix (also called the Cramer-Rao Bound matrix) for the problem at hand is used to determine the sensor configuration that yields the minimum possible covariance of any unbiased target estimator. It is shown that the optimal configuration lends itself to an interesting geometrical interpretation and that the spreading of the sensor configuration depends explicitly on the intensity of the measurement noise and the target depth. Simulation examples illustrate the key results derived.
