In the modern digital world, the use of animated applications has increased significantly and such applications have quietly become an integral part of life. Capturing human motions is a fundamental aspect of these applications which is performed by motion-capturing (MoCap) systems. Due to the heterogeneity of MoCap systems and marker configurations, the captured skeletons may vary in their structure, number of joints, and bone lengths. The need for motion retargeting arises to transfer motion captured from one articulated actor to another. Although motion retargeting is a long-standing issue, current methods cannot automatically execute retargeting between skeletons. This paper presents the retraining of a popular motion retargeting network with a new large-scale motion dataset. The retraining aims to demonstrate the capabilities of the motion retargeting network to handle the problem of motion retargeting between skeletons that may have different structures. The paper first, presents the motion retargeting network that employs an encoder-decoder architecture. Afterward, we re-train the motion retargeting network with a new MoCap dataset. To validate the effectiveness of the network, we visually compare the generated results with the existing retargeting model. The results show that the motion retargeting network effectively retargets the different motions. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. The paper describes the energy consumption from the battery based on the current measurements for various cases, i.e., speed (PWL adjustment) and loads. The main purpose of the research is to have additional and reliable information about power consumption and battery life estimation for autonomous guided vehicles (AGV). The authors propose a two-step algorithm. In the first step, a linear classifier was proposed. Then, the KNN classifier was tested;however, it did not give satisfactory results, so it was finally decided to use the random forest to estimate the load and PWL. The time domain current measurement is evaluated, and the beforementioned algorithms process the selected statistical measures. It has been proven that a two-step algorithm allows for achieving high accuracy. Based on the current observation, the paper is a good starting point for further investigation of the AGV because it is usually implemented in the AGV - so it does not require additional hardware. Moreover, it can lead to better energy management and increase battery lifetime. © 2023 IEEE.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is critical in evolving 5G and developing 6G networks, running on edge devices, and solving resource management challenges. The burgeoning number of edge devices draws attention to the potential of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks with their onboard computing capabilities for edge inference. This paper explores LEO scenarios where multiple remote sensing edge AI inference tasks concurrently process data from a single source. However, due to there being parts with the same functions between different AI applications, traditional monolithic edge AI architecture must be deployed repeatedly and falls short in efficiently harnessing the heterogeneous resources of LEO satellite networks. To solve this problem, we utilize the microservice architecture to decouple a single AI application into several independent microservices to reuse these same functions. However, due to the high latency caused by multiple microservices' communication, we need to design a deployment strategy to fully utilize resources to reduce the service latency. We present a microservice deployment model to minimize the total service latency across all AI applications and meet resource constraints with the constraints of hardware, energy, and memory limitations. This latency optimization problem is rewritten as a Markov decision process (MDP) to effectively deal with the challenge posed by the time-varying transmission rate caused by satellite mobility. To increase the training data utilization, we employ a Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) based reinforcement learning algorithm to meet the dynamic environment challenge. Finally, we obtain a sub-optimal solution with minimal accuracy loss and an acceptable solution time. © 2024 IEEE.

Collaboration of agents in a natural swarm enables the accomplishment of tasks that would be difficult or impossible for a single agent to complete alone. For example, a swarm of autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) enables the collaborative sensing of bulky loads for transportation over impassable terrains when the load weighs several times more than each UAV. In this work, we propose a hierarchical algorithmic architecture that supports the search and coverage of various unknown payload profiles for subsequent transportation. The grasping formation of UAVs over the payload emerges from the synthetic behaviours in the architecture without any path planning. Experiments show that our proposed design can be successfully applied in searching and coverage of various loads and has been validated in the real world through the use of Crazyflie micro-UAVs. Furthermore, the proposed grasping formation satisfies static equilibrium thereby reducing orientation changes in the load-swarm system during transportation. © 2023 IEEE.

An important aspect related to the effects of agricultural activities on the environment is represented by the nutrient loss in water and air (specifically nitrogen). The interactions between catchments hydrological processes, management of farm activities, climate changes and nitrogen losses constitute a complex phenomenon yet not well understood, being an important concern from the sustainable agriculture perspective. Nitrogen can be lost with water as leaching or runoff, or as gas as ammonia volatilization. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is particularly problematic because it is also a powerful greenhouse gas. The goal of the current article is to present innovative digital techniques to advance in understanding of this phenomena through an Information System that integrates Artificial Intelligence techniques such as Semantic Technologies and Machine Learning (ML) into Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) to support smart farming and sustainable agriculture. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a new disturbance observer (DO)-based reinforcement learning (RL) control approach for nonlinear systems with unmatched (generalized) disturbances. While a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) is utilized to measure the plant uncertainties, disturbances can exist in the plant via distinct channels from those of the control signals;so-called mismatched disturbances are theoretically difficult to attenuate within the channel of the system's states. A generalized disturbance observer-based compensator is implemented to address the uncertainty cancellation problem by removing the influence of uncertainties from the output channels. Con-currently, a composite actor-critic RL scheme is utilized for approximating the optimal control policy as well as the ideal value function pertaining to the compensated system by solving a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation for both online and offline iterations simultaneously. Stability analysis verifies the convergence of the proposed framework. Simulation results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. © 2024 IEEE.

To overcome the limitations of conventional echo state networks (ESN), such as redundant connections and insufficient frequency-domain feature extraction, this paper proposes a frequency-domain feature architecture search-based ESN (FS-ESN). Leveraging a frequency response fitness function, FS-ESN dynamically optimizes reservoir structures and incorporates frequency-domain features aligned with target tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that FS-ESN significantly improves feature extraction, adaptability, and predictive performance, outperforming traditional ESN models in task-specific applications. © 2024 IEEE.

Deep neural networks virtually dominate the domain of most modern vision systems, providing high performance at a cost of increased computational complexity. Since for those systems it is often required to operate both in real-time and with minimal energy consumption (e.g., for wearable devices or autonomous vehicles, edge Internet of Things (IoT), sensor networks), various network optimisation techniques are used, e.g., quantisation, pruning, or dedicated lightweight architectures. Due to the logarithmic distribution of weights in neural network layers, a method providing high performance with significant reduction in computational precision (for 4-bit weights and less) is the Power-of-Two (PoT) quantisation (and therefore also with a logarithmic distribution). This method introduces additional possibilities of replacing the typical for neural networks Multiply and ACcumulate (MAC—performing, e.g., convolution operations) units, with more energy-efficient Bitshift and ACcumulate (BAC). In this paper, we show that a hardware neural network accelerator with PoT weights implemented on the Zynq UltraScale + MPSoC ZCU104 SoC FPGA can be at least 1.4x more energy efficient than the uniform quantisation version. To further reduce the actual power requirement by omitting part of the computation for zero weights, we also propose a new pruning method adapted to logarithmic quantisation. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The superior performance of object detectors is often established under the condition that the test samples are in the same distribution as the training data. However, in many practical applications, out-of-distribution (OOD) instances are inevitable and usually lead to uncertainty in the results. In this paper, we propose a novel, intuitive, and scalable probabilistic object detection method for OOD detection. Unlike other uncertainty-modeling methods that either require huge computational costs to infer the weight distributions or rely on model training through synthetic outlier data, our method is able to distinguish between in-distribution (ID) data and OOD data via weight parameter sampling from proposed Gaussian distributions based on pre-trained networks. We demonstrate that our Bayesian object detector can achieve satisfactory OOD identification performance by reducing the FPR95 score by up to 8.19% and increasing the AUROC score by up to 13.94% when trained on BDD100k and VOC datasets as the ID datasets and evaluated on COCO2017 dataset as the OOD dataset. © 2023 International Society of Information Fusion.
