In this paper, a recently-reported single-phase rectifier with two outputs (RECTO) is further improved to reduce the current stress of the neutral inductor in the rectifier. The reduction is achieved by moving the neutral inductor away from the path of the grid current. As a result, the inductor only carries the differential current of the dual loads. Since the maximum value of the differential current is much smaller than that of the grid current, the current stress of the neutral inductor can be significantly reduced, and the size of the inductor becomes much smaller, which helps improve the power density of the RECTO. In theory, the current stress can be reduced by at least three times and the inductor size by at least nine times. It is worth noting that the current stress of the switches and the other features of the RECTO, e.g., operation principles, independent DC outputs and unity power factor, are not affected. Comparative experimental results are presented to demonstrate the reduction.

The proliferation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in various applications has necessitated the exploration of network architectures that can ensure efficient, scalable, and reliable communication. This study presents a comparative performance evaluation of traditional networking paradigms and Software-Defined Networking (SDN)-based architectures within WSN. Utilizing the Floodlight SDN controller and Mininet-WiFi emulator, we conducted a series of experiments across three different network topologies, varying the number of hosts and access points. The performance metrics focused on are average latency, packet loss percentage, and throughput. The results demonstrate a considerable improvement in all measured parameters under the SDN-based environment compared to the traditional setup. Specifically, SDN environments consistently showcased lower latency, minimal packet loss, and higher throughput, with the most notable difference observed in smaller network configurations. The findings suggest that SDN, with its centralized control plane, can significantly enhance the performance of WSNs, particularly in scenarios demanding rapid scalability and dynamic traffic management. This study underscores the potential of SDN architectures in optimizing WSN operations and lays the groundwork for future research in this domain. © 2024, Politechnica University of Bucharest. This paper presents two modern modulation techniques applied to three phase inverters from a hardware implementation point of view. The considered techniques are the sinusoidal pulse width modulation with zero sequence injection and the space vector modulation. Both these techniques conduct to the same result regarding supply voltage usage efficiency and harmonic content of the resulted signals. The implementation was developed in Matlab-Simulink, using the System Generator software, and validated through simulation. Both the modulation algorithms were implemented in hardware on a low cost FPGA, and the resulted designs are compared for resource usage efficiency, obtained speed and easiness of integration within a complex AC drive control system.

Analysis of complex systems such as hierarchically structured network systems that are employed in modelling and analysis various aspects and issues of control and management in telecommunications is investigated. Theory of graphs and binary matrices appear to be most suitable tools for modelling the overall structure of complex systems, in general, and of systemic hierarchies, in particular. A systematic methodology has been developed for computer simulation analysis and detecting general hierarchies in communications networking as well as for synthesis of system hierarchies. This methodology is an improved extension of Warfield's technique. © 2001 EUCA.

Combining position and force control is highly desirable in many robot applications. Many years of extensive research has resulted in a number of promising control approaches, but often too much engineering effort is required in order to evaluate a low level (high performance) control scheme on a real manipulator. The new control system we have obtained has two main advantages: first it provides a total open control architecture, and second it is the simplicity and the interactivity of the platform developed. Using this new control architecture, any force and motion control strategy can be programmed and implemented in a graphical and easy way.

This paper presents a dynamic model of a magnetic levitation system (Maglev) and suggests a Fuzzy Tuning of a proportional—integral--derivative controller (PID) that uses a fuzzy approach system to determine the PID controller's settings. The controller allows a steel ball to be suspended in free fall in the chosen position in reference to the electromagnet bottom end. The electromagnet levitation system can be controlled with a traditional PID controller, however because of the highly nonlinear of this system, it is unpredictable in the case of load and air gap changes. The fuzzy rules are developed to fuzzy tune PID while considering the control response and behavior of the system to find a solution to this problem. This paper shows excellent stability, rising time, settling time overshoot, and robust response results. The results reveal that this fuzzy PID controller solution can stabilize the ball's location and has strong disturbance rejection. The real time platform is designed for educational laboratory and test all the proposed control systems. © 2022, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a hierarchical multirate control scheme for nonlinear discrete-time systems is proposed, composed of a robust model predictive controller (MPC) and a multirate integral sliding mode (MISM) controller. In particular, the MISM controller acts at a faster sampling time than the MPC controller, and reduces the effect of model uncertainties and external disturbances, in order to obtain, at the next sampling instant of the MPC controller, a value of the system state that is as close as possible to the nominal one. To obtain this result, the control variable is composed of two parts: one generated by the MPC controller, and the other by the MISM controller. The a-priori reduction of the disturbance terms turns out to be very useful in order to improve the convergence properties of the MPC controller.

Over the past few years, there has been a rapid growth of new services such as online video games, video conferences, and multimedia services to end users. WiMAX is an emerging technology for next generation wireless networks which supports a large number of users. To achieve Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, an efficient and reliable scheduling algorithm is urgently needed. Among a large number of the proposed approaches in the literature, a variably weighted round robin scheduling algorithm (VWRR) has been proven to provide the best performance in an IP backbone network with no attempts on WiMAX networks. This paper proposes a dynamic uplink scheduling algorithm for WiMAX networks based on VWRR to allocate the bandwidth to users to maximize the throughput and ensure the constraints of delay, jitter, and load. A comparative study between the proposed scheduling algorithm and the two most famous scheduling algorithms: weighted round robin algorithm (WRR) and modified deficit round robin algorithm (MDRR) over WiMAX networks, is presented. Simulation results obtained using OPNET reveal that the proposed algorithm has a superior performance compared with WRR with respect to throughput, delay, jitter, and load. Additionally, the proposed scheduling algorithm is shown to provide an excellent level of reliability and scalability when increasing the number of served subscriber stations.

In the last two decades, Chaos theory has received a great deal of attention from the cryptographic community. This paper presents two ideas. First idea is using chaotic functions to overcome the weaknesses of the classical Hill cipher. The second idea is proposing a new encoder-decoder architecture, called ChaoEncoDeco, for securing JPEG images. An extra stage of encryption is embedded within the traditional JPEG codec to improve security level of such system. This security stage uses one of the chaotic functions called Logistic Map. This map is used to enhance the Hill cipher and achieve more secure encryption key. The properties of both chaotic system and of the Hill cipher encryption key are all utilized to obtain ultimate secure systems. The proposed encryption algorithm is crypto-analyzed and compared to the standard Hill cipher algorithm. Complete evaluation for the proposed architecture is also performed which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed system.

This paper focuses on genetic optimization and filtering efficiency ofa recently developed class ofWeighted Vector Directional Filters (WVDFs), which minimize the aggregated weighted angular distances between the samples contained in a sliding filtering window. As shown in the paper, the proposed genetically optimized WVDFs hold excellent detail preserving characteristics and are able to remove impulsive noise affecting color images. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
