Feature engineering is a crucial step in building well-performing machine learning pipelines. However, manually constructing highly predictive features is time-consuming and requires domain knowledge. Although the research area of automated feature engineering has attracted much interest lately, both in academia and industry, the scalability and efficiency of the existing systems and tools are still practically unsatisfactory. This paper presents a scalable and interpretable automated feature engineering framework, BigFeat, that optimizes input features’ quality to maximize the predictive performance according to a user-defined metric. BigFeat employs a dynamic feature generation and selection mechanism that constructs a set of expressive features that improve the prediction performance while retaining interpretability. Extensive experiments are conducted, and the results show that BigFeat provides superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art automated feature engineering framework, AutoFeat, on a wide range of datasets. We show that BigFeat significantly improves the F1-Score of 8 classifiers by 4.59%, on average. In addition, the performance improvement achieved by integrating BigFeat into different AutoML frameworks is higher than that achieved by integrating AutoFeat into the same frameworks. Besides, the scalability of BigFeat is confirmed by its linear complexity, parallel design, and execution time which is, on average, 22x faster than AutoFeat.

The paper proposes an interdisciplinary approach including methods from disciplines such as history of concepts, linguistics, natural language processing (NLP) and Semantic Web, to create a comparative framework for detecting semantic change in multilingual historical corpora and generating diachronic ontologies as linguistic linked open data (LLOD). Initiated as a use case (UC4.2.1) within the COST Action Nexus Linguarum, European network for Web-centred linguistic data science, the study will explore emerging trends in knowledge extraction, analysis and representation from linguistic data science, and apply the devised methodology to datasets in the humanities to trace the evolution of concepts from the domain of socio-cultural transformation. Model-free reinforcement learning (MFRL) usually has better asymptotic performance than the model-based reinforcement (MBRL) learning algorithms, especially in complex environments. But MBRL algorithms are very often much more sample-efficient, and sometimes are able to learn control tasks in just a handful of trials. In addition, in some domains, the MBRL algorithms can reach the MFRL performance with better sample efficiency. In recent years, MBRL research has increased in various application domains, such as robot control tasks, or game environments with complex observations. In this paper, we review the most popular techniques used in MBRL and look at some useful classification of algorithms in this area. © 2020 IEEE.

The performance of Interline DC Power Flow controllers (IDC-PFCs) in Voltage Source Converters (VSC)-based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids, can be affected due to different issues. The current limitation of HVDC lines, the voltage limitation of HVDC buses, and DC voltage of the IDC-PFC intermediary capacitor prevent effective and efficient operation of IDC-PFCs. In this paper, it is shown that this issue can be overcome by using a virtual capacitor in parallel with the IDC-PFC intermediary capacitor. Also, an energy control-based scheme is proposed for the operation of IDC-PFCs in VSC-HVDC grid. The benefits of using the virtual capacitor are: widening the operational area of the IDC-PFCs for the determined duty cycle and injecting more voltage in series to the interconnected HVDC line to control the related HVDC line current. The proposed solution is successfully evaluated on a CIGRE three-terminal VSC-HVDC grid which is modeled by linearized space-state equations.

In this paper, using tools from graph theory we provide verifiable necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique hydraulic equilibrium in district heating systems of meshed topology and containing multiple heat sources. Even though numerous publications have addressed the design of efficient algorithms for numerically finding hydraulic equilibria in the general context of water distribution networks, this is not the case for the analysis of existence and uniqueness. Moreover, most of the existing work dealing with these aspects exploit the equivalence between the nonlinear algebraic equations describing the hydraulic equilibria and the KKT conditions of a suitably defined nonlinear convex optimization problem. Differently, this paper proposes necessary and sufficient graph-theoretic conditions on the actuator placement for the existence and uniqueness of a hydraulic equilibrium, independent of the actuators' control objective. An example based on a representative district heating network is considered to illustrate the key aspects of our contribution, and an explicit formulation of the steady state solution is given for the case in which pressure drops through pipes are linear with respect to the flow rate.

Sewage sludge constitutes waste generated during wastewater treatment in any treatment plant. Sludge that meets the quality conditions specified in the legal regulations, due to fertilising properties, can be used for natural purposes (use in the recovery process on the surface of the earth or for the reclamation cover of landfills). However, sewage sludge contains various organic microcontaminants, such as, for example, PAHs that are toxic to aquatic and soil organisms, and the legal regulations do not specify the acceptable concentrations of these compounds. However, restrictions concerning PAHs in European legislation are proposed. The aim of the study was to use fractional order derivatives to develop a mathematical model describing changes in the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sewage sludge stored in natural conditions. The concentrations of selected PAHs were monitored for 3 months at fixed time intervals under conditions reflecting the use of sludge for natural purposes. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of PAHs was carried out using the GC-MS system. For the mathematical description of changes in the concentration values of individual compounds, fractional order derivatives were used and approximation was carried out using the classical equation of the first order. The developed mathematical model allows for predicting changes in PAH concentrations regarding sludge as well as determining the time necessary to obtain the required concentration of these compounds. © 2024, The Authors. This paper presents a novel computer vision-based approach for assessing leg length discrepancy (LLD) in individuals with prosthetic limbs. The proposed solution uses image processing techniques to detect markers placed on the patient's knee, prosthesis, and a reference wall, allowing for precise measurement of limb alignment. Through a comparative analysis of the initial reference position, set by a specialist, and the current limb positioning, the algorithm identifies discrepancies in leg length. The system employs a non-invasive methodology, utilizing an IP camera to capture images and communicate them via Wi-Fi to a computing unit for further analysis. Experimental validation, conducted on simulated LLDs ranging from 1mm to 10mm, demonstrates the system's high sensitivity and accuracy in detecting subtle changes in limb alignment. This approach offers a scalable, automated alternative to traditional manual methods, improving both the reliability and ease of prosthetic adjustments.

In recent years, online social networks and online news venues have become some of the main news and event-related information spreading mediums. Although using these mediums has facilitated the speed of accessing information, it also created a new phenomenon used for propaganda and disinformation: fake news. As fake news has detrimental consequences to society, new technologies need to be developed in order to stop their harmful effects. In this paper, we propose two Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) architectures with sentence transformers to solve two tasks: (1) a multi-class mono-lingual fake news detection task (i.e., mono-lingual task);and (2) a multi-class cross-lingual fake news detection task (i.e., cross-lingual task). For the mono-lingual task, we train and test a BiLSTM with BART sentence transformers model on an English dataset and obtain an accuracy of ∼ 0.53 and an F1-Score of ∼ 0.32. For the cross-lingual task, we train a BiLSTM with XLM sentence transformers model on an English dataset and test the model using transfer learning on a German dataset. For this task, we obtain an accuracy of ∼ 0.28 and an F1-Score of ∼ 0.19. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Coatings on dental implants are still being developed in order to obtain an ideal balance between their cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties. This paper presents the bacteriostatic and biological properties of oxide-polymer layers with clindamycin on titanium dental implants. A layer was formed on the surface of titanium implants, which was composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and clindamycin. The surface morphology was analyzed using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Clindamycin loaded into the polymer was successfully found to inhibit S. aureus and slightly inhibit E. coli bacteria. The average inhibition zone obtained for S. aureus was 14 mm. Only single bacteria were found to be adhered to the implant surface, and changes in their morphology were observed (SEM analysis). The cytocompatibility of the implant extracts was evaluated via the Alamar Blue test and by using cytometry techniques. More than 95 % of L929 cells were found to be living after 24 h of their culture with extracts collected from the implants with hybrid coatings. Additionally, the stability of different concentrations of clindamycin in aqueous solutions at various temperatures was analyzed. It was found that the storage of clindamycin at 4 °C caused the lowest changes in concentration. The concentration of clindamycin influenced both the L929 cells’ viability and bacterial inhibition. © 2025 The Authors

The augmented version of C programming language is presented. The language was completed with a series of low-level and high-level facilities to enlarge the language usage spectrum to various computing systems, operations, users. The ambiguities and inconsistencies have been resolved by managing problematic and undefined languages elements through an interpretation and management similar to that used in the case of other C syntax based languages. The proposed augmentative completeness elements, through @C approach, preserve the spirit of C language and its basic characteristics through compatibility with the standard version but also allow rejuvenation and bring C language to the present programming languages state of the art. © 2022, CC BY.
