The paper describes few faults that can be present in Photovoltaic modules and presents results related to training and the testing of a mobile application designed for identifying faults in photovoltaic modules based on thermal images. The mobile application was trained and then tested with different individual and multiple faults. The mobile application can identify with high accuracy both the individual and multiple faults if the thermal images are preprocessed before to be uploaded for analysis.

A Unified Formulation of Geometry-aware Discrete Dynamic Movement Primitives

Learning from demonstration (LfD) is considered as an efficient way to transfer skills from humans to robots. Traditionally, LfD has been used to transfer Cartesian and joint positions and forces from human demonstrations. The traditional approach works well for some robotic tasks, but for many tasks of interest, it is necessary to learn skills such as orientation, impedance, and/or manipulability that have specific geometric characteristics. An effective encoding of such skills can be only achieved if the underlying geometric structure of the skill manifold is considered and the constrains arising from this structure are fulfilled during both learning and execution. However, typical learned skill models such as dynamic movement primitives (DMPs) are limited to Euclidean data and fail in correctly embedding quantities with geometric constraints. In this paper, we propose a novel and mathematically principled framework that uses concepts from Riemannian geometry to allow DMPs to properly embed geometric constrains. The resulting DMP formulation can deal with data sampled from any Riemannian manifold including, but not limited to, unit quaternions and symmetric and positive definite matrices. The proposed approach has been extensively evaluated both on simulated data and real robot experiments. The performed evaluation demonstrates that beneficial properties of DMPs, such as convergence to a given goal and the possibility to change the goal during operation, apply also to the proposed formulation. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Background and Objective: Videodermoscopy is the gold standard in melanoma diagnosis. A new research trend aims to support specialists’ work by automating this examination method, but most research focuses on developing detectors to replace dermatologists. Our study aims to present a novel idea which focuses on supporting the examination process instead of completely automating it. Instead of detecting and classifying all naevi each time, our approach focuses on full screening at the first visit and shortening the examination at subsequent visits. During the following examinations, images of all naevi are taken by supporting staff and are compared with previously taken images using feature-matching or co-registration-based algorithms. An unmatched naevus needs to be checked by the specialist, meaning that a new naevus appeared or an old one had changed. Methods: The similarity between images (ranging from 0% to 100%) was obtained with characteristic points searching (ORB method) and co-registration-based methods. No dataset presenting changes of naevi over time exists, so augmenting the images from PH2 and HAM10000 datasets was required to simulate the time flow. Results: The decision bound was set, so the true positive rate of each method was equal to 99%, giving the specificity of ORB equal to 97% (PH2) and 89% (HAM10000). Similar tests were performed using a co-registration algorithm giving specificity equal to 23% (PH2) and 19% (HAM10000). Conclusions: We believe that employing our approach will allow supporting staff to perform screening without experts’ help, decreasing examination time and costs and increasing the accessibility of dermoscopic examinations. © 2025 The Authors

In this paper we propose an original distributed control framework for DC microgrids. We first formulate the (optimal) control objectives as an aggregative game suitable for the energy trading market. Then, based on duality, we analyze the equivalent distributed optimal condition for the proposed aggregative game and design a distributed control scheme to solve it. By interconnecting the DC microgrid and the designed distributed control system in a power preserving way, we steer the DC microgrid’s state to the desired optimal equilibrium, satisfying a predefined set of local and coupling constraints. Finally, based on singular perturbation system theory, we analyze the convergence of the closed-loop system. The simulation results show excellent performance of the proposed control framework.

High throughput event filtering: The interpolation-based DIF algorithm hardware architecture

In recent years, there has been rapid development in the field of event vision. It manifests itself both on the technical side, as better and better event sensors are available, and on the algorithmic side, as more and more applications of this technology are proposed and scientific papers are published. However, the data stream from these sensors typically contains a significant amount of noise, which varies depending on factors such as the degree of illumination in the observed scene or the temperature of the sensor. We propose a hardware architecture of the Distance-based Interpolation with Frequency Weights(DIF) filter and implement it on an FPGA chip. To evaluate the algorithm and compare it with other solutions, we have prepared a new high-resolution event dataset, which we are also releasing to the community. Our architecture achieved a throughput of 403.39 million events per second (MEPS) for a sensor resolution of 1280 × 720 and 428.45 MEPS for a resolution of 640 × 480. The averagevalues of the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC) index ranged from 0.844 to 0.999, depending on the dataset, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art filtering solutions, but with much higher throughput and better operation over a wide range of noise levels.

The development of sensory substitution devices for visually impaired is one of the most complex interdisciplinary research areas. These devices exploit the ability of the brain to adapt, learn and process the lost sensory information (vision) using sounds and/or haptics. Starting from previously published research results, this paper explores the users' requirements and practicality aspects necessary in the design of sensory substitution devices for visually impaired. A new mobile perception architecture is proposed and preliminary results are presented.

We study a class of dynamical networks modeled by linear and time-invariant systems which are described by state-space realizations. For these networks, we investigate the relations between various types of factorizations which preserve the structure of their component subsystems’ interconnection. In doing so, we provide tractable means of shifting between different types of sparsity-preserving representations and we show how to employ these factorizations to obtain distributed implementations for stabilizing and possibly stable controllers. The micro RNA-messenger RNA dynamics is a topic of constant interest. In this paper we analyze the stability of equilibria of a mathematical model associated to this interaction. After proving the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium point in the positive ortant, we provide numerically tractable conditions (by using Linear Matrix Inequalities techniques) to check the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point. In today’s digital age, fake news has become a major problem that has serious consequences, ranging from social unrest to political upheaval. To address this issue, new methods for detecting and mitigating fake news are required. In this work, we propose to incorporate contextual and network-aware features into the detection process. This involves analyzing not only the content of a news article but also the context in which it was shared and the network of users who shared it, i.e., the information diffusion. Thus, we propose GETAE, Graph Information Enhanced Deep Neural Network Ensemble ArchitecturE for Fake News Detection, a novel ensemble architecture that uses textual content together with the social interactions to improve fake news detection. GETAE contains two Branches: the Text Branch and the Propagation Branch. The Text Branch uses Word and Transformer Embeddings and a Deep Neural Network based on feed-forward and bidirectional Recurrent Neural Networks ([Bi]RNN) for learning novel contextual features and creating a novel Text Content Embedding. The Propagation Branch considers the information propagation within the graph network and proposes a Deep Learning architecture that employs Node Embeddings to create novel Propagation Embedding. GETAE Ensemble combines the two novel embeddings, i.e., Text Content Embedding and Propagation Embedding, to create a novel Propagation-Enhanced Content Embedding which is afterward used for classification. The experimental results obtained on two real-world publicly available datasets, i.e., Twitter15 and Twitter16, prove that using this approach improves fake news detection and outperforms state-of-the-art models. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.
