The market of Medical Devices has an annual growth rate perspective of 5.4% in the 2022 - 2028 period. The growth rate is mainly supported by the increased usage of devices for chronic diseases prevention and for remote patient monitoring. The growth rate is also supported by the population's appetite for mobile devices. The continuously growing number of mobile devices has led to an increase in the number of cyber-attacks against them. In this paper we present Personal Medical Hub, an optimized security solution for Bluetooth enabled medical devices, that enhances data privacy and is aimed to offer protection against man-in-the-middle attacks and other security breaches and backdoors. © 2022 IEEE.

GMA: Gap Imputing Algorithm for time series missing values

Data collected from the environment in computer engineering may include missing values due to various factors, such as lost readings from sensors caused by communication errors or power outages. Missing data can result in inaccurate analysis or even false alarms. It is therefore essential to identify missing values and correct them as accurately as possible to ensure the integrity of the analysis and the effectiveness of any decision-making based on the data. This paper presents a new approach, the Gap Imputing Algorithm (GMA), for imputing missing values in time series data. The Gap Imputing Algorithm (GMA) identifies sequences of missing values and determines the periodic time of the time series. Then, it searches for the most similar subsequence from historical data. Unlike previous work, GMA supports any type of time series and is resilient to consecutively missing values with different gaps distances. The experimental findings, which were based on both real-world and benchmark datasets, demonstrate that the GMA framework proposed in this study outperforms other methods in terms of accuracy. Specifically, our proposed method achieves an accuracy score that is 5 to 20% higher than that of other methods. Furthermore, the GMA framework is well suited to handling missing gaps with larger distances, and it produces more accurate imputations, particularly for datasets with strong periodic patterns.

Sensors are the foundation to facilitate smart cities, smart grids, and smart transportation, and distance sensors are especially important for sensing the environment and gathering information. Researchers have developed various methods to calibrate distance sensors;however, they mainly focus on using external information for calibration, which is inefficient and computationally expensive. To alleviate the above problems, we propose machine learning (ML)-based calibration approaches for distance sensors. We develop two calibration mechanisms, where the naive mechanism directly predicts the true distance, while the residual mechanism predicts the residual for calibration. The conventional ML regression algorithms are then adopted to predict the true distance or calibration residual. Experimental results show that the designed residual calibration mechanism outperforms the naive mechanism by reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) by 92.2% and mean absolute error (MAE) by 93.3% in the fitting task. In prediction, the proposed 2-D-residual mechanism achieves an improvement of 78.6% and 65.7% compared to the state-of-the-art method. The experimental results show the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed ML-based calibration method, especially for the 2-D mechanism, which achieves the highest robustness in all fitting and prediction tasks. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Timely pest detection and identification is critical as part of modern agriculture. Halyomorpha Halys is a prevalent pest with proven harmful impacts on numerous crops and agricultural regions. The paper proposes an efficient model to improve the detection of two invasive stink bugs: Halyomorpha halys and Nezara Viridula. automatic detection of these two bugs is essential in various fields, such as precision agriculture and integrated pest management. The high performances obtained in the present study open new perspectives for the further development of insect pest detection systems and can serve as a basis for future modifications and improvements of these models. © 2023 IEEE.

The representation of relevant information from volume data sets is a challenging task due to the high complexity of the structures and spatial features found in such data. The challenge is to represent such structures and features in a way that makes them easy to visually perceive without causing information overload in the resulting images. To this end, we propose a straightforward means of highlighting various regions from isosurfaces found in volume data, such that the visual perception of important surface details is improved. We use an approach based on curvature analysis to determine variations of the isosurface shape, allowing the accentuation of meaningful surface regions. We show that, while the resulting surface accents alone are enough to improve the display of surface details, combining our method with local illumination significantly contributes to a raised level of perception of the surface shape, as well as to the generation of more comprehensive representations of the underlying data. We present our results through illustrative images of medical CT volumes and perform an evaluation using several state-of-the-art no-reference image quality assessment methods. Additionally, our technique does not require precomputation and is easy to incorporate into existing volume rendering engines.

This study proposes methods that can be used to examine and interpret comments that users have made after watching videos on YouTube on a particular topic. YouTube tutorials are very popular among young people. They have become an important pillar in informal education, thus contributing to the rapid acquisition of skills and knowledge. Under these circumstances, we were interested in analysing the YouTube videos comments, knowing that the platform has a continuous increase in popularity, which is also due to the opportunities of sharing them. Since ChatGPT-themed YouTube videos have seen a significant surge in popularity since 2022, we were interested to analyse some videos that approach the topics of 'ChatGPT, AI clone, AI robot and Deep Learning.' © 2024 IEEE.

Split Cost Function based Single-Horizon Finite-Set Model Predictive control for Boost Converter with Loading Current Estimation

This paper presents a robust single-horizon finite-set model predictive control (FS-MPC) method for controlling the output voltage of boost converters. Unlike the long-horizon FS-MPC approach, which addresses the non-minimum phase (NMP) behavior of the converter by extending the prediction horizon (thereby increasing computational effort), the proposed method ensures stable voltage regulation by incorporating inductor current regulation into the cost function. To achieve this, the desired inductor current is calculated based on input-output power balance theory. Unlike recent studies that require an additional sensor to measure the loading current, this paper develops a loading current estimation approach to eliminate the need for extra current sensors, thereby enhancing the robustness of the proposed FS-MPC method. Additionally, over-current protection, which is typically absent in conventional FS-MPC used for direct voltage regulation, is also incorporated into the proposed method. The conventional cost function is also modified to tackle the NMP behavior more effectively. The performance of the proposed method in regulating the output voltage is evaluated through simulation results. Finally, its effectiveness across a wide range of output power and various load characteristics, including resistive, constant power, and constant current loads, is validated via experimental results. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is not only able to eliminate the overshoot and undershoot, but can also improve the settling time by 41% compared to a well-tuned conventional cascaded PI controller. In addition, the proposed method can reduce the computational burden by 84% compared to the conventional long-horizon FS-MPC approach. © 2013 IEEE.

Evolutionary optimization plays an important role in the representation of information from data sets originating from various technical fields and natural sciences, as it helps to explore parameter spaces for meaningful representations. Quality-Diversity (QD) methods, notably MAP-Elites variants, prove effective in diverse fields, emphasizing their ability to provide sets of high-performing solutions. This review discusses challenges in single- and multi-objective optimization, with applications in multiple directions such as image processing, visualization, and medical imaging. It also reviews QD algorithms and highlights advancements in algorithmic adaptations, user-driven optimization and the potential to explore complex feature spaces. The presented works contribute to understanding and applying evolutionary optimization for solving visualization and feature space exploration problems in various domains.

In response to the escalating demand for electricity, the aging process and inherent failures in power lines have become unavoidable challenges in their operational integrity. This research addresses the imperative need for a robust method to detect damage in power insulator disc images, introducing a novel feature extraction technique grounded in color intensity profile transformation and ensemble learning. For the purposes of the research, a specific dataset was developed based on publicly available images of power insulators. The collection consists of 9232 images of insulator discs which included 2184 images of damaged discs. The discernible damages include breakages and burnouts. Two distinct analysis variants were employed. In the first variant (V1), two classification groups were selected: disc with damages and disc without damages. In the second variant (V2), three classification groups were selected: discs without damage, broken discs, and burnout discs. The described research was divided into two successive stages. In the first of them (S1), the transformed color intensity profiles for the prepared data set were built and various machine learning models for their classification were trained and evaluated. In the next stage (S2), previously developed, highest efficient machine learning models, were used to make the detection of various damaged types of overhead line insulator discs. For the first stage of research high-performance results and a high value of the F1 score parameters were obtained (F1 score = 0.999 for the first variant (S1V1) and F1 score = 0.992 for the second variant (S1V2). In the second stage of research and the first variant (S2V1), the highest result of the F1 score was 0.932 and for the second variant (S2V2) F1 score was 0.930. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
