He is engaged in the development of technology for large-scale centralized control of power systems as well as the networking of control computers. He is currently a System Analysis Group Chief in the System Operation Division of the company. Graduated in 1985 from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering Tokyo Institute of Technology and joined Chubu Electric Power Co. in the same year. He is engaged mainly in the development of technology for power system protection and stabilization. He is currently working in the System Analysis Group of the System Operation Division of the company. Toshiba Corporation Graduated in 1967 from the Department of Electrical Engineering University of Tokyo and joined Toshiba Corporation in the same year and engaged in development of power system control systems in Japan and abroad. He is currently a Chief of System Technology in the Power System Technology Division of the company. He is a member of the Theses Subcommittee of the 1995 World Energy Conference. He is an Assistant Secretary of the Japanese Committee of CIGRE and a member of the Japanese Subcommittee of CIGRE SC35 and 39. He is a member of IEEE. Completed his Master's course at the Science and Engineering Research Division of the Graduate School Waseda University in 1980 and joined Toshiba Corporation in the same year. H

A new transient stability controller system (TSC) based on on-line transient stability calculation has been developed. The TSC system prevents the power system from wide-area blackout by shedding generators optimally when a serious fault occurs. This system consists of a central processing unit (TSC-P), and four local units for fault detection (TSC-C), and seventeen units for generator shedding(TSC-T). The TSC-P selects optimal generators to be shed for stabilization based on on-line transient stability calculation for contingencies at 500 kV lines and buses every five minutes. The results are transmitted to the TSC-Cs periodically. Should any fault occur, only one TSC-C will detect the fault occurrence and send control signals to the TSC-Ts which actually generate shedding signals. To realize the TSC system, essential are fast stability evaluation methods for a large number of contingencies and effective selection methods of optimal generators to be shed for stabilization. This paper presents total algorithms applied in the TSC-P, the results of algorithm verification tests using a prototype system combined with a large-scale analog simulator, and the characteristics of the actual system.

His research interests are in data communications and multimedia applications computer networks image processing and pattern recognition. Abdel-Latif A. Abdel-Bary:obtained the BEng degree in Electronics Technology from Arab Maritime Transport Academy in 1986. In 1995 he obtained the MSc degree in Information Technology from the Institute of Graduate Studies & Research Alexandria University. His current research interests include ICAL hypermedia and automatic programming.

In this article a multimedia computer-assisted learning (MCAL) system is presented. The major objective of this work was to investigate the potential of using such systems as tools for transferring instructional course information through various types of computer media as opposed to the classic CAL systems. The philosophy and techniques employed to design the system are investigated. Usage of the implemented system and its merits have been illustrated through its application to teach engineering students and technicians the theory and concepts of marine radar. System design, implementation, test, and revision phases are presented and discussed.

This paper presents optimum pairing and ordering (P/O) conditions for simultaneous reduction in total capacitance, sensitivity and output noise of cascade SC filters. First, investigating relations among conditions proposed for minimizing these three parameters independently, termed, CTmin, Smin and Nmin conditions, we make it clear that there is no P/O assignment with which the three parameters can be simultaneously minimized. Then we verify that Nmin condition is valid in reducing two other parameters. Trade-off optimum conditions are proposed by combining Nmin with Smin and CTmin. These conditions can limit the number of P/O assignments, in which an optimum P/O assignment for simultaneous reduction of three parameters can be searched out easily. Depending upon applications, the trade-off optimum condition can be slightly modified by adjusting the proportion of CTmin Smin and Nmin. Efficiency of the proposed trade-off optimum conditions is confirmed through computer simulation using several kinds of filters. © 1992 IEEE.

The procedure of harmonic insertion is generalized in this paper. Analytical expressions of the voltage spectra are derived. The insertion of the 3rd harmonic to the modulating signal, which is of particular interest, is considered as a special case. It is demonstrated in this case that the fundamental harmonic component of the phase and the line‐to‐line voltage is not affected by the insertion of the 3rd harmonic for sufficiently high values of the chopping ratio. However it has been shown that the higher harmonic spectrum is significantly improved as compared to the case of pure sinusoidal modulation. For different values of the fundamental component the optimal values of the amplitude of the third harmonic to be inserted have been calculated so that the distortion factor of the higher harmonic spectrum is minimized. Other cases of harmonic insertion are also considered which provide spectrum efficiency improvement. Experimental results are given which have been obtained by means of a microcomputer controlled PWM generator constructed for this purpose. Copyright © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A Fuzzy Inference Approach to Failure Diagnosis of Adaptive controlled Systems

An on-line scheme to failure diagnosis is proposed for dynamic systems under adaptive control, which is designed based on a direct approach to self-tuning regulator. Failure modes occurred in the system are assumed to be described by unexpected changes in physical parameters of the system. The parameter changes in the controlled system can effectively be detected by using Kullback Discrimination Information (KDI) as an index for model discrimination. In order to decide whether the detected system parameter change is caused by a failure or not, a fuzzy inference approach to failure decision is considered. Some appropriate membership functions which describe fuzzy events of failures are constructed to perform the fuzzy inference. In this way, useful knowledge about failure modes which is available from, e.g., experts can be introduced into the model- based diagnosis technique. Simulation studies of a second-order damped oscillator have been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

Based on the SCARA concept, accepted worldwide, this paper considers the possibility of realizing SCARA with a full circle working area. The basis of the approach is a mechanism with two eccentrically positioned rotating discs instead of two joined links. In this way, apart from a circular working area and some other advantages, the installation of several tools (hands) is also facilitated. This paper analyzes the advantages of the proposed solution and the possibilities of its realization.

A novel protocol under a priority time constraint for real-time communication systems is proposed. This protocol can maintain two priority classes. The characteristics of the proposed protocol and its features are presented, and a simulator is built to examine its performance. The performance of the protocol is compared with that of the virtual-time carrier sense multiple-access (VT-CSMA) protocol. The results show that, although the proposed protocol has less throughput than the VT-CSMA protocol, its behavior is better than that of VT-CSMA with respect to high-priority packets. This behavior is the main goal of the protocol, which reduces high-priority-packet loss.< >

An on-line scheme to fault detection in adaptive control systems is proposed by introducing Kullbaek Discrimination Information (KDI) as a detection index. When a physical parameter change due to a failure has occurred in a system under adaptive control, the failure effect will hardly be visible in the output performance because of the adaptation mechanism. Such a parameter change is also difficult to detect by monitoring the regulator parameters, which are determined by a recursive identification based on the direct approach. Since the failure effect is reflected as a change in the predictor model used for the adaptive control design, the fault detection leads to a model discrimination problem. It has been shown that the KDI can be used as an effective distortion measure for the model discrimination and the index can be applied in a modified form to detect a fault on-line. Simulation studies on a second order damped oscillatory system have been carried out to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

On the orthogonal collocation and mathematical programming approach for state constrained optimal control problems

The orthogonal collocation approach is now well known to solve, effectively, the state constrained optimal control problems. Mathematical programming technique was also used as an effective tool to construct the optimal trajectories. In this paper, a study is done on the efficiency and accuracy requirements of the combined orthogonal collocation and mathematical programming approach, as regarding the employed optimization algorithm, and the number of orthogonal collocation points. It is shown, by experimentation with numerical examples that Fletcher-Powell optimization algorithm is much more faster to produce convergence than Fletcher-Reeves algorithm. The efficiency can be a ratio of six-to-one. The results are compared with an alternative approach to solve the same problem. It is shown that the present algorithm is less costly than the alternative approach, although requiring more computation time. The choice is then a compromise one. As the number of orthogonal points increases, the resulting solutions are more accurate, but the convergence speed decreases. Experimentation with N, shows a save of five-to-one in computing time can be achieved with almost the same cost function. Finally, it is shown, by a numerical example, that uniformly distributed collocation points result in non-optimal solutions, which also violate the problem constraints. It is a numerical proof of the superiority of the orthogonal collocation approach. © 1986.
