Fault diagnosis in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is important to protect communities and ecosystems from toxic elements discharged into water. In this sense, fault identification of sensors plays an important role as they are the key components of the water plants control, especially because environmental legislation is very strict when referring to failures or anomalies in WWTPs. This paper analyzes the performances of two Deep Learning models, a Feedforward Neural Network (FFNN) and a 1D Convolution Neural Network (1DCNN) for identifying five operating states of the dissolved oxygen (DO) sensor: normal and faulty (bias, stuck, spike and precision degradation faults). The experiments were conducted on the Benchmark Simulator Model No 2 (BSM2) developed by the IWA Task Group. The performance of the Deep Learning (DL) classifiers was evaluated via accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics. The best overall classification accuracy was obtained by FFNN, 98.32% for training and 98.30% for testing. © 2023 IEEE.

One-Sided Lipschitz (OSL) fractional order modeling is a top choice for solving the stabilization issue of nonlinear systems. Despite numerous studies on the subject, there remains a gap in understanding when it comes to fractional calculus. By providing a stabilizing strategy for a certain type of OSL fractional order nonlinear systems, this study fills the gap. A numerical example demonstrating the correctness of the suggested approach and demonstrating its efficacy for the tested class. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper focuses on modeling and analyzing an orbit determination technique specifically tailored to geostationary satellites employing active maneuvers. Active maneuvers involving deliberate orbital adjustments, using Reaction control Thrusters (RCT) by the onboard propulsion systems, are performed to maintain the desired position and extend operational lifespans. In addition, this paper presents a comprehensive overview of the orbit determination process, encompassing observations and tracking, data processing, dynamic modeling, maneuver planning, orbit determination, and error analysis. The mathematical model is implemented to detect the position of the Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite through MATLAB-Simulink. The results provide insights into the difficulties and opportunities in modeling and analyzing geostationary satellite orbits based on active maneuvers. The outcomes of this paper advance satellite operations by enhancing an orbit determination technique. A comparative analysis is conducted with an established satellite platform (Eurostar-3000) using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for orbital parameters. Ultimately, the model simulation results validate the proposed methodology's effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we introduce new discourse quality metrics and an evaluation method, and furthermore, we provide a pilot implementation and evaluate it in a specific use case – that of public speaking. Voice analysis and discourse quality metrics are important topics as they can solve various problems of modern-day life. In public speaking trainings, it is important to be able to analyze voice and discourse, to offer the speaker valuable feedback and information on how to improve when speaking in public. We identified several papers that study this issue, in which rhythm, tone, fluency and clarity, as well as biological signals, are analyzed, to detect emotions or anxiety. We defined a set of voice quality metrics that can be implemented based on any speech recognition system. Our pilot implementation showcases the difference of using various Speech-to-Text (STT) APIs over the proposed metrics and how these affect the discourse evaluation process. © 2023, Politechnica University of Bucharest. Drones have become common devices that are increasingly used, from toy mini drones to very advanced autonomous flying platforms used in various industries. The safety of using engineering structures and the need to shorten the time of carrying out diagnostic activities, and thus reduce costs, force the use of innovative tools to carry out an automated and unmanned process of assessing the technical condition of existing engineering structures, especially large-size ones, including bridges strengthened with external FRP (fibre reinforced polymer) composite overlays. There are conventional methods for assessing the technical condition of existing building structures conducted by inspectors and experts, involving the use of typical inspection and diagnostic tools. During the research, it was found that it is possible to conduct an automated and unmanned process of assessing the technical condition of engineering structures using an unmanned flying platform equipped with a thermal imaging diagnostic device. The uniqueness of the presented solution is that the drone is equipped with a docking module that allows the drone to be temporarily attached to the structure being diagnosed for the duration of diagnostic activities. To ensure appropriate conditions for structural diagnostics, a unique system of automated diagnostic processes and a multi-stage structure of the control system in all phases of operation were developed. The article presents a solution for the control system based on control consistent with the reference model. In particular, the focus was on the difficult and dangerous issue of altitude control during the docking phase. Simulation tests conducted in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, as well as laboratory and field tests on a real drone proved the correctness of the proposed solutions, which facilitated the undisturbed operation of the diagnostic module. © 2025 The Author(s).

Spatial modulation (SM) is a low-complexity multiple-input/multiple-output transmission technique that combines index modulation and quadrature amplitude modulation for wireless communications. In this work, we consider the problem of link adaption for generalized spatial modulation (GSM) systems that use multiple active transmit antennas simultaneously. Link adaption algorithms require a real-time estimation of the link quality of the time-variant communication channels, e.g., by means of estimating the mutual information. However, determining the mutual information of SM is challenging because no closed-form expressions have been found so far. Recently, multilayer feedforward neural networks were applied to compute the achievable rate of an index modulation link. However, only a small SM system with two transmit and two receive antennas was considered. In this work, we consider a similar approach but investigate larger GSM systems with multiple active antennas. We analyze the portions of mutual information related to antenna selection and the IQ modulation processes, which depend on the GSM variant and the signal constellation. © VDE VERLAG GMBH · Berlin · Offenbach.

Considering the need for mass customization in Industry 4.0, it is necessary to develop non-traditional production methods. Therefore, additive manufacturing can become a key technology for the production of customized products thanks to its ability to create irregular objects or shapes. In addition to enabling new design possibilities, the additive manufacturing method holds promise for increasing social, economic, and environmental sustainability. It also has the potential to reduce energy consumption and lower polymer material consumption. Additive manufacturing contrasts with conventional processes, as it consists in applying materials layer by layer. Conventional manufacturing operations produce polymer waste that is difficult to reintroduce into manufacturing processes. Efficient Deep Learning Models Based on Tension Techniques for Sign Language Recognition

Among the various ways of self-expression and communication between people, communication by speaking prevails. Speech presents a significant challenge for some disabled people, such as the deaf, hearing impaired, wordless, and dumb persons. Therefore, these people rely on the use of sign language to interact with others. Sign language is a system of movements and visual messages that ensure the integration of these individuals into groups that communicate vocally. On the other side, it is necessary to understand the gestures and linguistic semantics of these individuals. The main objective of this study is to establish a new model that enhances the performance of the existing paradigms in use for the recognition of American Sign Language (ASL). Therefore, three enhanced deep-learning models of YOLOv5 for recognizing the alphabetic and numeric information conveyed by hand motions are presented in this paper. These models depend on using different attention approaches. The suggested models were evaluated using the MU HandImages ASL dataset. The proposed models yielded superior results compared to those achieved by the initial version of YOLOv5. The modified models have reached their maximum accuracy of 98.9%, maximum recall of 97.5%, maximum mAP 0.5 of 99.2%, and maximum mAP 0.5:0.95 of 98.9%. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
