The advances in Internet of Everything (IoE) and the market-oriented cloud computing have provided opportunities to resolve the challenges caused by the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure virtualization, capacity planning, data storage or complexity. The volume and types of IoT data motivate the need for a data storage framework towards the integration of both structured and unstructured data. In this paper, we propose a novel game theoretic technique for efficient and dynamic storage allocation in cloud-centric IoT systems. The benefit maximization problem is formulated as a cost-benefit analysis game investigating the storage capacity currently used in the cloud. In view of each player's strategy to lease additional storage capacity, the game property is analyzed and we prove that the game always admits a pure strategy Nash equilibrium. Since the player's decision affects the level of benefit maximization, we elaborate on a cost-optimal storage allocation incentive mechanism, which scales effectively once non-linear or linear demand for storage capacity occurs, towards achieving optimal leasing conditions on cloud storage and computing capacity level. The experimental validation tests prove the effectiveness of the proposed game theoretic approach allocating the requests for more storage capacity in a cost-effective manner, which achieves to maximize the benefits. © 2017 IFIP.

The cultivation of Escherichia coli bacteria is widely used by geneticists and biopharmaceuticals to produce medicines and vaccines. In such industries, Bioprocesses are known by their harsh environment and very expensive physical sensors. This paper deals with nonlinear estimation and control of fed-batch Escherichia coli bioprocess. Enhancing the process performance and maximizing its efficiency by optimizing the control of Escherichia coli cultures depends on the availability of appropriate online sensors for the main culture components. In this study, an innovative method for nonlinear estimation and control of bioprocesses is designed and assessed. The new algorithm for control and estimation of Escherichia coli bioprocess states, based on the State-Dependent Riccati Equation technique, is validated by numerical simulation. The results obtained clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique for Biosystems in measuring, monitoring, and control of their natural nonlinear dynamics. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017.

The paper presents preliminary results for on-line measurement method of isopropanol concentration in the ultrasonic nebulization process using BW-Tek compact UV/Vis spectrophotometer. The experimental setup with nebulization vessel was constructed with a probe for on-line measurements. The tests were performed using a standard mixture of isopropanol and water with the volume isopropanol concentration in the range 19% to 83%. The results of on-line spectrophotometric method were verified using stationary spectrophotometer and a gas chromatography method. Linear calibration for the obtained data was performed and measurement uncertainties for the tested method were evaluated as confidence intervals.

The paper presents the application of the linearizing control technique for stabilization of the isopropanol concentration in the ultrasonic nebulization process. The isopropanol concentration has to be kept constant to make the nebulization process more efficient. This is achieved by manipulating the inlet flow rate of a fresh isopropanol-water mixture. Because the content of the vessel is not well-mixed, it was shown that by measuring only the isopropanol concentration at the bottom of the vessel, the control system performance could be improved by the optimal selection of controller parameters. Moreover, the simulation results have show n that the closed-loop system was stable and exhibited similar behavior, even if the nebulization rate was not know precisely.

As computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) gains a broader usage as a viable alternative to traditional educational scenarios, the need for automated tools capable of evaluating active participation and collaboration among peers in online discussions increases. In this study, we validate a quantitative model of predicting involvement in CSCL chats based on student's pauses throughout the timeline of the conversation. Starting from a corpus of 10 chat conversations, our proposed model explains 55% of the variance in terms of student participation and 42% in terms of collaboration, although relying on simple quantitative indices.

In this article the most important aspects related to the specifics of production in the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) and importance and capabilities of a sample designed model of FMS system are presented. There is also described an example of the multiversion production process-production of cars. Three major area of automobile production plants are shown, namely: body shop, paint shop and the assembly shop. This paper presents the Car Sequencing Problem (CSP), widely discussed in the literature, with reference to the three above-mentioned stages. There is pointed out the simplicity of the Car Sequencing Problem known from the literature in relation to the sequencing of vehicles on the real production lines. In addition, various types of buffer warehouses are defined and importance of loop buffer in the production of cars is discussed. © Copyright AGH-UST, Kraków, Polska, 2016.

A concept of the porous core electromagnet is studied. The form for the electromagnet core was printed using 3D technique. The core was manufactured manually using iron filings and cured in room temperature and air pressure. The aim of this paper is to deliver initial analysis of the proposed powder core together with the modelling procedure by the using finite element method, and to compare the experimental results of the manually manufactured electromagnet. The material property of the numerical model was adjusted to fit the experimental results. Finally, the electromagnet was tested in the levitation real–time experiment.

In the domain of energy automation, where a massive number of software-based IoT services interact with a complex dynamic system, processes for software installation and software update become more important and more complex. These processes have to ensure that the dependencies on all layers are fulfilled, including dependencies arising due to the energy system controlled by IT components being a hidden communication channel between these components. In addition, the processes have to be resilient against faults in and attacks to both the energy grid and the communication network. The ERA-Net funded project LarGo! aims at developing and testing processes for the large scale rollout of software applications in the power grid domain as well as the user domain. This article describes a work in progress and the project's roadmap to solve the technical issues. It investigates the problems that arise from the interlocking of the two networks- the power grid and the communication network. Based on this analysis a first set of requirements for a rollout process in such a Smart Grid is derived and the chosen approach to verify the resilience of the developed processes under research is described.

T2K2: The twitter top-k keywords benchmark

Information retrieval from textual data focuses on the construction of vocabularies that contain weighted term tuples. Such vocabularies can then be exploited by various text analysis algorithms to extract new knowledge, e.g., top-k keywords, top-k documents, etc. Topk keywords are casually used for various purposes, are often computed on-the-fly, and thus must be efficiently computed. To compare competing weighting schemes and database implementations, benchmarking is customary. To the best of our knowledge, no benchmark currently addresses these problems. Hence, in this paper, we present a top-k keywords benchmark, T2K2, which features a real tweet dataset and queries with various complexities and selectivities. T2K2helps evaluate weighting schemes and database implementations in terms of computing performance. To illustrate T2K2's relevance and genericity, we show how to implement the TF-IDF and Okapi BM25 weighting schemes, on one hand, and relational and document-oriented database instantiations, on the other hand. In this paper, we develop an upper bound for the SPARSEVA (SPARSe Estimation based on a VAlidation criterion) estimation error in a general scheme, i.e., when the cost function is strongly convex and the regularized norm is decomposable for a pair of subspaces. We show how this general bound can be applied to a sparse regression problem to obtain an upper bound for the traditional SPARSEVA problem. Numerical results are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the suggested bound. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.
