Machine learning (ML) sees an increasing prevalence of being used in the internet-of-things (IoT)-based smart grid. However, the trustworthiness of ML is a severe issue that must be addressed to accommodate the trend of ML-based smart grid applications (MLsgAPPs). The adversarial distortion injected into the power signal will greatly affect the system’s normal control and operation. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct vulnerability assessment for MLsgAPPs applied in the context of safety-critical power systems. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the recent progress in designing attack and defense methods for MLsgAPPs. Unlike the traditional survey about ML security, this is the first review work about the security of MLsgAPPs that focuses on the characteristics of power systems. We first highlight the specifics for constructing the adversarial attacks on MLsgAPPs. Then, the vulnerability of MLsgAPP is analyzed from both the aspects of the power system and ML model. Afterward, a comprehensive survey is conducted to review and compare existing studies about the adversarial attacks on MLsgAPPs in scenarios of generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption, and the countermeasures are reviewed according to the attacks that they defend against. Finally, the future research directions are discussed on the attacker’s and defender’s side, respectively. We also analyze the potential vulnerability of large language model-based (e.g., ChatGPT) power system applications. Overall, we encourage more researchers to contribute to investigating the adversarial issues of MLsgAPPs. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A Learning-based Adaptive Compliance Method for Symmetric Bi-manual Manipulation

Symmetric bi-manual manipulation is an essential skill in on-orbit operationsdue to its potent load capacity. Previous works have applied compliant controlto maintain the stability of manipulations. However, traditional methods haveviewed motion planning and compliant control as two separate modules, which canlead to conflicts with the simultaneous change of the desired trajectory andimpedance parameters in the presence of external forces and ***, the joint usage of these two modules requires experts to manuallyadjust parameters. To achieve high efficiency while enhancing adaptability, wepropose a novel Learning-based Adaptive Compliance algorithm (LAC) thatimproves the efficiency and robustness of symmetric bi-manual ***, the algorithm framework integrates desired trajectory generationand impedance-parameter adjustment under a unified framework to mitigatecontradictions and improve efficiency. Second, we introduce a centralizedActor-Critic framework with LSTM networks preprocessing the force states,enhancing the synchronization of bi-manual manipulation. When evaluated indual-arm peg-in-hole assembly experiments, our method outperforms baselinealgorithms in terms of optimality and robustness. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Digitalization of health, healthcare and healthcare delivery unequivocal have positive consequences contributing to health system goals, but they also might have some negative ones which have to be avoided or mitigated. The scope of this paper is to introduce the necessity of the assessment of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and to identify the most appropriate and important criteria needed for the evaluation and comparison of functional digital healthcare solutions. It aims to outline consistent criteria against which digital health technologies and services can be evaluated during the prototyping phase, but also during long-term operation. © 2021 IEEE.

Standard vs. non-standard cross-validation: evaluation of performance in a space with structured distribution of datapoints

Cross-validation is a popularly used approach to evaluation of performance for classifiers. It relies on random selection of independent samples for training and testing, and assumes that if any similarities among samples exist, they do not lead to known grouping of datapoints in the input space. If these conditions are violated, as it may happen for datasets with some structure of samples included, standard cross-validation can return biased results even for many folds. In the paper the research on cross-validation was reported for application to stylometric datasets, describing a task of authorship attribution. The comparison of standard and non-standard processing was presented. In the latter case, selected subsets of examples were swapped over between training and test sets several times. The experiments with three popular classifiers showed that standard cross-validation tended to give over-optimistic results, whereas non-standard processing was more guarded, and by that more reliable. To avoid high computational costs involved, evaluation based on averaged predictions for limited numbers of test sets can be considered as a reasonable compromise.

Energy communities are emerging entities which need their own Information and Communication System. Resilience is a key metric of such communities, and it has to be implemented for both energy supply versus public network outages and for its information system versus cyber-attacks, acting as cyber-citadels which have to resist external malicious attacks while having also digital interactions with external entities. The paper presents solutions for a resilient energy community with appropriate implementations of digital interaction for data exchange, in order to acquire external energy service for specialized companies and to deliver also information and communication-related services for external users. Principles of a Contractual Data Protection Regulation are presented, as an adaptation of data protection tailored for automated energy services and based on secure data exchange. The principles are verified in a demonstration project which has also external entities with digital interaction. © 20XX IEEE.

The Use of Mathematical Fractional-Calculus to Modeling of Changes in Concentrations of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) in Sewage Sludge

Sewage sludge constitutes waste generated during wastewater treatment in any treatment plant. Sludge that meets the quality conditions specified in the legal regulations, due to fertilising properties, can be used for natural purposes (use in the recovery process on the surface of the earth or for the reclamation cover of landfills). However, sewage sludge contains various organic microcontaminants, such as, for example, PAHs that are toxic to aquatic and soil organisms, and the legal regulations do not specify the acceptable concentrations of these compounds. However, restrictions concerning PAHs in European legislation are proposed. The aim of the study was to use fractional order derivatives to develop a mathematical model describing changes in the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sewage sludge stored in natural conditions. The concentrations of selected PAHs were monitored for 3 months at fixed time intervals under conditions reflecting the use of sludge for natural purposes. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of PAHs was carried out using the GC-MS system. For the mathematical description of changes in the concentration values of individual compounds, fractional order derivatives were used and approximation was carried out using the classical equation of the first order. The developed mathematical model allows for predicting changes in PAH concentrations regarding sludge as well as determining the time necessary to obtain the required concentration of these compounds. © 2024, The Authors. Weighting factor for attributes based on reduct cardinality

Estimation of attribute importance can be obtained by a mechanism that allows to assign some weight to variables. Weighting attributes can lead to their ordering, which, in turn, can be exploited for feature selection and reduction. Decision reducts constitute an example of a mechanism aiming at dimensionality reduction, embedded in rough set approach to data mining. The paper presents research works, where the process of weighting was driven by the proposed factor based on reducts, with varying their sets, and the results were analysed through the perspective of reduct cardinality, since it is typically considered as the most significant indicator of reduct quality. Constructed rankings of variables were used for inferring sets of decision rules from gradually decreasing numbers of features, and then the performance of the rule classifiers was tested. The experiments show that for the weighting factor to be useful for feature reduction, not only reduct cardinalities, but also the numbers of reducts found need to be taken into account.

Consistent, highly throughput and space scalable distributed architecture for layered NoSQL data store

Maintaining strong consistency and throughput in distributed NoSQL systems is very important these days, but often impossible to achieve at the same time. Consistency problems in distributed systems result in serious consequences, e.g. data loss, while throughput problems lead to poor system performance. This paper goes beyond solving consistency issues in distributed NoSQL systems and addresses the important problem of ensuring high throughput in such systems at the same time. To this end, we proposed a novel architecture of the layered NoSQL system that enables greater throughput by using replication of data items in a dynamic way while still preserving strong consistency. It is characterized by high availability, enhanced throughput, strong consistency, and space scalability. This system was built on top of a very efficient NoSQL system, called Scalable Distributed Two-Layer Data Store (SD2DS). To develop our system, we identified and analyzed the inconsistencies in the case of SD2DS architecture with increased throughput in the case of concurrent operations execution, as well as in the case of unfinished operations. The theoretical correctness of the proposed solution was proved. Its performance was experimentally evaluated in comparison with common NoSQL systems such as MemCached and MongoDB. The results confirmed its superiority in terms of performance, so it can successfully compete with publicly available solutions. It makes it possible to use the SD2DS system in practical IT systems that require high performance and consistency.

PointPillars Backbone Type Selection For Fast and Accurate LiDAR Object Detection

3D object detection from LiDAR sensor data is an important topic in the context of autonomous cars and drones. In this paper, we present the results of experiments on the impact of backbone selection of a deep convolutional neural network on detection accuracy and computation speed. We chose the PointPillars network, which is characterised by a simple architecture, high speed, and modularity that allows for easy expansion. During the experiments, we paid particular attention to the change in detection efficiency (measured by the mAP metric) and the total number of multiply-addition operations needed to process one point cloud. We tested 10 different convolutional neural network architectures that are widely used in image-based detection problems. For a backbone like MobilenetV1, we obtained an almost 4x speedup at the cost of a 1.13% decrease in mAP. On the other hand, for CSPDarknet we got an acceleration of more than 1.5x at an increase in mAP of 0.33%. We have thus demonstrated that it is possible to significantly speed up a 3D object detector in LiDAR point clouds with a small decrease in detection efficiency. This result can be used when PointPillars or similar algorithms are implemented in embedded systems, including SoC FPGAs. We consider a strategic network monitoring problem involving the operator of a networked system and an attacker. The operator aims to randomize the placement of multiple protected sensors to monitor and protect components that are vulnerable to attacks. We account for the heterogeneity in the components’ security levels and formulate a large-scale maximin optimization problem. After analyzing its structure, we propose a three-step approach to approximately solve the problem. First, we solve a generalized covering set problem and run a combinatorial algorithm to compute an approximate solution. Then, we compute approximation bounds by solving a nonlinear set packing problem. To evaluate our solution approach, we implement two classical solution methods based on column generation and multiplicative weights updates, and test them on real-world water distribution and power systems. Our numerical analysis shows that our solution method outperforms the classical methods on large-scale networks, as it efficiently generates solutions that achieve a close to optimal performance and that are simple to implement in practice. © 2023, CC BY.
