There is a significant increase of cloud and networking-enabled applications, leading to an exponential growth of network traffic. Monitoring all these applications and their generated traffic is a challenging and complex task, especially in regard to anonymous networks used to access the Dark Web or darknet. Manual investigation of the network traffic to determine patterns of malicious activity is a very difficult task and the results might not be satisfactory. The usage of machine learning is the most viable approach for the classification of the traffic as normal or malign activity. This paper analyzes CIC-Darknet 2020 dataset to classify the benign and darknet traffic. Before applying any classifiers to our dataset, we have balanced it using Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE). We have applied PCA to reduce dimensionality, furthermore, ensemble techniques, logistic classifiers, tree-classifiers, and Naive Bayes have been compared and evaluated thoroughly with various evaluation metrics Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1-Score, and Mathew's Correlation Coefficient (MCC). © 2021 IEEE.

Discretisation often constitutes a part of initial data preparation stage. It translates continuous domain of features into granular, by assigning a number of intervals to represent attributes' values by nominal categories. Typically all real-valued features are subjected to transformations, regardless of their characteristics. The paper presents research on discretisation executed with a discerning approach. To all available attributes, feature selection mechanisms were employed, in the form of rankings that order variables based on their importance. Exploiting this discovered knowledge on attributes, discretisation was then driven by a ranking, and either highest or lowest ranking features were selected for transformation. The influence of selective discretisation on the performance of classification systems was studied for three popular inducers. The procedure was employed in the field of stylometry, and a task of authorship recognition, considered as a binary classification with balanced classes. The experiments show that discretisation based on importance of features can lead to better performance than in the case of transformations applied to all attributes. © 2020 The Authors. In this work, an attempt is made for the first time to use the measurement pattern generated by morphological transformation quantified by Hausdorff fractal dimension (HFD) and classified with ensemble learning based on bagging. The proposed work uses three morphological transformations for image preprocessing: hit-and-miss transform (HMT), white (WHT), and black top-hat (BHT). The pattern texture of US breast images is described by extracting the HFD from the regions of interest (ROI) after the ultrasound (US) images have been preprocessed. The main objective of this study was achieved by comparatively analyzing the classification performance of features using the Random Forest (RF), Extra Trees (ET) classifier, and bagging ensemble method based on XGBoot classifier. In presented study, the XGBoost classifier and BHT image processing method give an accuracy of 89.8% in a binary classification, benign versus malignant breast cancer.

The management of wastewater is a significant global concern that calls for innovative solutions to lessen its negative effects on the environment. Conventional techniques of treating wastewater need improvement in order to deal with newly discovered contaminants, which highlights the importance of providing precise estimates of process performance and resource requirements. The worsening water shortage situation requires a paradigm shift in which wastewater is viewed as a useful resource. It is possible to create an economy that is both sustainable and circular by treating and recycling wastewater, putting less pressure on freshwater supplies, and leaving as little of an environmental footprint as possible. This study investigates the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as software estimators in the treatment of wastewater, with a particular emphasis on predicting ammonium concentrations in effluent. In order to deal with imbalanced time-series data, the research introduces innovative data pretreatment strategies. These techniques include a Sliding Window protocol, Data Normalization, and a K-Fold training scheme. This illustrates the potential of ANNs to revolutionize wastewater treatment procedures and drive developments in this field. The suggested method demonstrates higher performance when estimating pollutant concentrations, showing the ability of ANNs to do so.

While the $$H_\infty $$ observer-based control has found widespread application in the literature for integer-order systems, researchers have shown less interest in addressing the same issue within the fractional-order framework. In this context, this study delves into the application of $$H_\infty $$ observer-based control for the Hadamard fractional-order system (HFOS) described by the Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy models (TSFM). Using Lyapunov approach and by employing a matrix decoupling technique, LMI based conditions ensuring the existence of an observer and controller, are proposed. To minimize the impact of disturbances on the controlled output, $$H_\infty $$ optimization technique is used. The validity of our approach is substantiated through an example, underscoring the robustness and reliability of our proposed findings.

In this paper, a novel machine learning derived control performance assessment (CPA) classification system is proposed. It is dedicated for a wide class of PID-based control industrial loops with processes exhibiting dynamical properties close to second order plus delay time (SOPDT). The proposed concept is very general and easy to configure to distinguish between acceptable and poor closed loop performance. This approach allows for determining the best (but also robust and practically achievable) closed loop performance based on very popular and intuitive closed loop quality factors. Training set can be automatically derived off-line using a number of different, diverse control performance indices (CPIs) used as discriminative features of the assessed control system. The proposed extended set of CPIs is discussed with comprehensive performance assessment of different machine learning based classification methods and practical application of the suggested solution. As a result, a general-purpose CPA system is derived that can be immediately applied in practice without any preliminary or additional learning stage during normal closed loop operation. Comparing concepts of quantum and classical neural network models for image classification task

While quantum architectures are still under development, when available, they will only be able to process quantum data when machine learning algorithms can only process numerical data. Therefore, in the issues of classification or regression, it is necessary to simulate and study quantum systems that will transfer the numerical input data to a quantum form and enable quantum computers to use the available methods of machine learning. This material includes the results of experiments on training and performance of a hybrid quantum-classical neural network developed for the problem of classification of handwritten digits from the MNIST data set. The comparative results of two models: classical and quantum neural networks of a similar number of training parameters, indicate that the quantum network, although its simulation is time-consuming, overcomes the classical network (it has better convergence and achieves higher training and testing accuracy). © 2021, CC BY.

The paper describes few faults that can be present in Photovoltaic modules and presents results related to training and the testing of a mobile application designed for identifying faults in photovoltaic modules based on thermal images. The mobile application was trained and then tested with different individual and multiple faults. The mobile application can identify with high accuracy both the individual and multiple faults if the thermal images are preprocessed before to be uploaded for analysis.

Mini-batch stochastic subgradient for functional constrained optimization

In this paper we consider finite sum composite convex optimization problems with many functional constraints. The objective function is expressed as a finite sum of two terms, one of which admits easy computation of (sub)gradients while the other is amenable to proximal evaluations. We assume a generalized bounded gradient condition on the objective which allows us to simultaneously tackle both smooth and nonsmooth problems. We also consider the cases of both with and without a strong convexity property. Further, we assume that each constraint set is given as the level set of a convex but not necessarily differentiable function. We reformulate the constrained finite sum problem into a stochastic optimization problem for which the stochastic subgradient projection method from [17] specializes to a collection of mini-batch variants, with different mini-batch sizes for the objective function and functional constraints, respectively. More specifically, at each iteration, our algorithm takes a mini-batch stochastic proximal subgradient step aimed at minimizing the objective function and then a subsequent mini-batch subgradient projection step minimizing the feasibility violation. By specializing different mini-batching strategies, we derive exact expressions for the stepsizes as a function of the mini-batch size and in some cases we also derive insightful stepsize-switching rules which describe when one should switch from a constant to a decreasing stepsize regime. We also prove sublinear convergence rates for the mini-batch subgradient projection algorithm which depend explicitly on the mini-batch sizes and on the properties of the objective function. This paper deals with the real-time implementation of feedback controllers. In particular, it provides an analysis of the stability property of closed-loop systems that include a controller that can sporadically miss deadlines. In this context, the weakly hard m-K computational model has been widely adopted and researchers used it to design and verify controllers that are robust to deadline misses. Rather than using the m-K model, we focus on another weakly-hard model, the number of consecutive deadline misses, showing a neat mathematical connection between real-time systems and control theory. We formalise this connection using the joint spectral radius and we discuss how to prove stability guarantees on the combination of a controller (that is unaware of deadline misses) and its system-level implementation.
