This article reports work-in-progress of a parallel kinematic robot development for construction with main focus on the concept phase. We assume the weight distribution of the proposed structure enables integration of robotic components into construction equipment while enabling tailoring of important characteristics such as accuracy, stiffness and workspace toward application needs. When EEG signals are used to assess the level of student engagement in online teaching tasks, they are often interfered by noise. It is a challenge to effectively remove these noises. Currently, deep learning methods have been applied to the field of EEG denoising. However, existing methods still have some problems. The denoised signals still have obvious noise residue, or the original EEG signals are damaged, and the model fitting speed is too slow. Image dehazing, as a typical denoising task in the field of image enhancement, has achieved great success in recent years. Therefore, inspired by advanced models in this field, we introduce CNN into EEG denoising tasks. In this paper, we take GCANet, an excellent image enhancement model, as an example. The dilated convolutions and gate fusion subnetworks included in GCANet enable more efficient EEG signal denoising. The results demonstrate that the proposed model effectively reduces noise while preserving essential features. Furthermore, in comparison to other state-of-the-art models, our proposed model exhibits enhanced robustness and faster convergence, as evidenced by achieving lower loss values after five epochs. Its good performance provides a new development idea for the field of EEG denoising. © 2023, Taiwan Ubiquitous Information CO LTD. All rights reserved.

The quotient of two multivariate Gaussian densities can be written as an unnormalized Gaussian density, which has been applied in some recently developed multiple-model fixed-interval smoothing algorithms. However, this expression is invalid if instead of being positive definite, the covariance of the unnormalized Gaussian density is indefinite (i.e., it has both positive and negative eigenvalues) or undefined (i.e., computing it requires inverting a singular matrix). This paper considers approximating the quotient of two Gaussian densities in this case using two different approaches to mitigate the caused numerical problems. The first approach directly replaces the indefinite covariance of the unnormalized Gaussian density with a positive definite matrix nearest to it. The second approach computes the approximation through solving, using the natural gradient, an optimization problem with a Kullback-Leibler divergence-based cost function. This paper illustrates the application of the theoretical results by incorporating them into an existing smoothing method for jump Markov systems and utilizing the obtained smoothers to track a maneuvering target.

The traffic from the large number of IoT devices connected to the IoT is a source of congestion known as the Massive Access Problem (MAP), that results in packet losses, delays and missed deadlines for real-time data. This paper reviews the literature on MAP and summarizes recent results on two approaches that have been designed to mitigate MAP. One approach is based on randomizing the packet arrival instants to IoT gateways within a given time interval that is chosen so that packet arrivals do not exceed their deadlines, but also so that they do not constitute bulk arrivals. The second approach is a novel traffic shaping policy named the Quasi-Deterministic-Transmission-Policy (QDTP) which has been proved to drastically reduce queue formation at the receiving gateway by delaying packet departures from the IoT devices in a judicious manner. Both analytical and experimental results are summarized, that describe the benefits of these techniques. © 2022, The Author(s).

The paper presents the implementation aspects of a visual inspection system dedicated as part of the advanced control in Flat Glass Manufacturing Industry. The system has to identify and to provide a measurement of the mechanical no-uniformity of the glass ribbon before the cutting process in order to maximize the output of the manufacturing process. The necessity of developing the presented system is pointed out by being imposed for achieving an advance automation level. The image processing techniques and algorithms used have to provide results with a high reliability even in conditions of a very large variety of the types of image distortions necessary to be identified. The development of the proposed visual inspection system is coming with the approach of modified Hough transform technique for processing the images and is obtaining a high robustness of the results.

Objective. Common spatial patterns (CSP) is a prominent feature extraction algorithm in motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, CSP is computed using sample-based covariance-matrix estimation. Hence, its performance deteriorates if the number of training trials is small. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel regularized covariance matrix estimation framework for CSP (i.e. DTW-RCSP) based on dynamic time warping (DTW) and transfer learning. Approach. The proposed framework combines the subject-specific covariance matrix (Σ55) estimated using the available trials from the new subject, with a novel DTW-based transferred covariance matrix (ΣDTW) estimated using previous subjects trials. In the proposed ΣDTW, the available labelled trials from the previous subjects are temporally aligned to the average of the available trials of the new subject from the same class using DTW. This alignment aims to reduce temporal variations and non-stationarities between previous subjects' trials and the available trials from the new subjects. Moreover, to tackle the problem of regularization parameter selection when only a few trials are available for training, an online method is proposed, where the best regularization parameter is selected based on the confidence scores of the trained classifier on the upcoming first few labelled testing trials. Main results. The proposed framework is evaluated on two datasets against two baseline algorithms. The obtained results reveal that DTW-RCSP significantly outperformed the baseline algorithms at various testing scenarios, particularly, when only a few trials are available for training. Significance. Impressively, our results show that successful BCI interactions could be achieved with a calibration session as small as only one trial per class. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Veterinary titanium (Ti) real dental implants were anodized in calcium hypophosphite solution to obtain a porous, bioactive layer. The anodized implant surface was covered by a poly(sebacic anhydride) (PSBA) layer with amoxicillin. SEM analysis showed an irregular distribution of the antibiotic on the surface. However, confocal microscopy images revealed the formation of a uniform polymer layer. The thickness of the oxide and polymer layers was similar, between 6-9 μm. PSBA is an easy, hydrolysable polymer. After the polymer with amoxicillin was immersed in phosphate buffered solution (PBS) solution for 1 h, more than 53% of hydrolysis products were detected by 1H NMR spectroscopy. After 9 days of polymer immersion, the hydrolysis product content was more than 67%. Drug release was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). After 1 h of implant immersion in PBS an average of 6.0 μg/mL of amoxicillin was released. Importantly, the released concentration of amoxicillin was enough to inhibit S. aureus (ATCC 25923) and S. epidermidis (ATCC 12228) growth and decrease their adhesion to the implant surface. This paper presents the cytocompatibility results of PSBA, amoxicillin, and extracts collected from the implants exposed to mouse fibroblast L929 and osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. PSBA concentrations up to 1% did not significantly affect cell viability. Amoxicillin concentrations up to 150 μl/mL were cytocompatible with both cells line. Cell viability was greater than 70% for both cell lines after 24 h of treatment with extracts from modified implants that were immersed in PBS for 72 h prior to viability experiments. This work presents a simple method to obtain a hybrid, bacteriostatic and biocompatible layer on long-term implant surfaces. These techniques may find application in the surface treatment of various Ti implants with a variety of shapes and sizes. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper we propose an original distributed control framework for DC microgrids. We first formulate the (optimal) control objectives as an aggregative game suitable for the energy trading market. Then, based on duality, we analyze the equivalent distributed optimal condition for the proposed aggregative game and design a distributed control scheme to solve it. By interconnecting the DC microgrid and the designed distributed control system in a power preserving way, we steer the DC microgrid’s state to the desired optimal equilibrium, satisfying a predefined set of local and coupling constraints. Finally, based on singular perturbation system theory, we analyze the convergence of the closed-loop system. The simulation results show excellent performance of the proposed control framework.

Buildings are becoming more intelligent and in the same time more complex, in due time with the advance in IoT developments and innovations. This means more interconnected devices and more challenges to enhance tenant comfort, to reduce energy consumption and to assert the financial well-being of the space. Therefore, research on Smart Buildings is relevant to address opportunities for IoT innovation in intelligent spaces, increase operational performance and improve efficiency. This work presents data platforms for dashboards and predictions trends, emphasizing multiple provocations in the field. Our objective is to build a middleware for scalable implementation to explore and visualize spatial and temporal data across buildings. We propose the understanding of the meaning behind data - using an open source backend tool as TICK stack with the front end of Chronograf or even Grafana which runs as a web application to create smart buildings sensing service. © 2019, Politechnica University of Bucharest.
