This work studies the sparse adaptive filter designs in the presence of impulsive disturbance for audio signal recovery. By using the sparse representation of desired signal and compressibility of impulsive disturbance, a joint sparse least mean p-norm (JSLMP) optimization, in which p-norm (1 ≤ p ≤ 2) measures the data fidelity and q-norm (0 ≤ q ≤ 1) enforces sparse solutions, is developed, termed as q-JSLMP. The filter weights update is derived based on the gradient descent, and the Adam and variable step size (VSS) are integrated to accelerate convergence and avoid potential local minima. In the special case of q = 1, namely 1-JSLMP, its convergence condition and mean square deviation (MSD) analysis are derived. Finally, the frame of application to corrupted audio signals is designed. The results from experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms other approaches in terms of objective measures on numerical simulation and speech datasets. © 2024, The Authors. Trajectory planning for semilinear time-fractional reaction-diffusion systems under Robin boundary conditions ⁎

This paper describes how to design flatness-based distributed feedforward controllers for the solution of the trajectory planning problem of semilinear time-fractional reaction-diffusion systems (TFRDSs), where the first-order time derivative of conventional reaction-diffusion system is extended to a Caputo fractional derivative of order α ϵ (0,1]. To this end, an implicit system variable and control input parametrization is determined based on the spectral property of system operator with respect to a basic output and its fractional-order derivatives. The convergence of the parametrizations is guaranteed by restricting the basic output to some certain Gevrey classes. With these, we propose two approaches on solving the trajectory planning problem within a prescribed finite time interval. A simulation example is finally included to illustrate our results.

Gas sensors are extensively employed for monitoring and detection of hazardous gases and vapors. Many of them are produced on rigid substrates, but flexible and wearable gas sensors are needed for intriguing usage including the internet of things (IoT) and medical devices. The materials with the greatest potential for the fabrication of flexible and wearable gas sensing devices are two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting nanomaterials, which consist of graphene and its substitutes, transition metal dichalcogenides, and MXenes. These types of materials have good mechanical flexibility, high charge carrier mobility, a large area of surface, an abundance of defects and dangling bonds, and, in certain instances adequate transparency and ease of synthesis. In this review, we have addressed the different 2D nonmaterial properties for gas sensing in the context of fabrication of flexible/wearable gas sensors. We have discussed the sensing performance of flexible/wearable gas sensors in various forms such as pristine, composite and noble metal decorated. We believe that content of this review paper is greatly useful for the researchers working in the research area of fabrication of flexible/wearable gas sensors. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This paper presents a case study of a rotor fault occurring in the rotor generator of a steam power plant located in Lontar, Banten Province, Indonesia. The steam power plant has 3 x 315 MV capacity and uses hydrogen in the cooling system. The issue arising during the operation was caused by heat transfer exceeding the normal level. The grounding of the rotor occurred through rising vibration and temperature, tripping the generator unit. During repairs, the axial spacer was replaced with a new model, where it is longer than the original, adding a bar spacer at a previously unavailable position and creating a cooling track profile. This is a case study on the replacement of the axial spacer model aimed at preventing the expansion of the winding, so as not to touch with each other, through the installation of a longer axial spacer and the addition of the spacer bar, and lastly adding the track profile to the cooling hydrogen gas flow thereby maximizing the cooling process from the end winding rotor generator. Heat transfer is an analysed parameter related to the model change of the axial spacer. The addition of a track cooling gas flow has been able to maximize the heat transfer process, which is simulated in this paper. The performance of the rotor generator increased through several parameters after the replacement of the axial spacer model. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Performance evaluation for ranking-based discretisation

Discretisation often constitutes a part of initial data preparation stage. It translates continuous domain of features into granular, by assigning a number of intervals to represent attributes’ values by nominal categories. Typically all real-valued features are subjected to transformations, regardless of their characteristics. The paper presents research on discretisation executed with a discerning approach. To all available attributes, feature selection mechanisms were employed, in the form of rankings that order variables based on their importance. Exploiting this discovered knowledge on attributes, discretisation was then driven by a ranking, and either highest or lowest ranking features were selected for transformation. The influence of selective discretisation on the performance of classification systems was studied for three popular inducers. The procedure was employed in the field of stylometry, and a task of authorship recognition, considered as a binary classification with balanced classes. The experiments show that discretisation based on importance of features can lead to better performance than in the case of transformations applied to all attributes.

As of early 2020, almost all countries are fighting the coronavirus pandemic by implementing the rigorous restrictions recommended by the World Health Organisation to help reduce the number of infections as much as possible. The restrictions also apply to members of the academic community. The universities have suspended all teaching activities - except online. Most universities have introduced solutions for distance learning. However, organisation of distance education requires appropriate technological infrastructure. Providing the right IT infrastructure is not an easy challenge, because network devices and network servers note record-breaking peak loads during this time. It seems that there are potentially many possibilities of using artificial intelligence to improve the performance of distance learning platforms, information systems and network infrastructure in this difficult and demanding period. Examples of such use of artificial intelligence applications are presented in this article. The paper shows that the use of artificial intelligence to improve the operation of distance learning servers is potentially possible in many areas. It is also worth noting that the application of artificial neural networks and LSTM neural networks for this purpose seems very promising. The presentation of sample experiments and obtained results in this article seems to confirm this thesis.

Super-resolution reconstruction is a process aimed at enhancing image spatial resolution. To evaluate the quality of super-resolution, the reconstruction outcome is compared with a ground-truth reference image, and the dissimilarity between them is commonly treated as a determinant of the reconstruction quality. While this is straightforward for simulated data, it becomes more challenging for real-world scenarios, in which reference images and the reconstruction inputs are acquired using different imaging sensors. In such cases, the dissimilarity also results from other factors concerned with different sensor characteristics. In a recently organized Proba-V Super Resolution Challenge, the reconstruction quality was assessed using a modified peak signal-to-noise ratio which compensates for small shifts and global changes in the brightness. In the study reported here, we investigate a number of image similarity metrics to verify their robustness against different levels of distortions applied to Proba-V images. We expect that the reported results will help in choosing appropriate metrics while developing new super-resolution solutions aimed at real-world scenarios.

The forgotten document-oriented database management systems: An overview and benchmark of native XML DODBMSes in comparison with JSON DODBMSes

In the current context of Big Data, a multitude of new NoSQL solutions for storing, managing, and extracting information and patterns from semi-structured data have been proposed and implemented. These solutions were developed to relieve the issue of rigid data structures present in relational databases, by introducing semi-structured and flexible schema design. As current data generated by different sources and devices, especially from IoT sensors and actuators, use either XML or JSON format, depending on the application, database technologies that store and query semi-structured data in XML format are needed. Thus, Native XML Databases, which were initially designed to manipulate XML data using standardized querying languages, i.e., XQuery and XPath, were rebranded as NoSQL Document-Oriented Databases Systems. Currently, the majority of these solutions have been replaced with the more modern JSON based Database Management Systems. However, we believe that XML-based solutions can still deliver performance in executing complex queries on heterogeneous collections. Unfortunately nowadays, research lacks a clear comparison of the scalability and performance for database technologies that store and query documents in XML versus the more modern JSON format. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, there are no Big Data-compliant benchmarks for such database technologies. In this paper, we present a comparison for selected Document-Oriented Database Systems that either use the XML format to encode documents, i.e., BaseX, eXist-db, and Sedna, or the JSON format, i.e., MongoDB, CouchDB, and Couchbase. To underline the performance differences we also propose a benchmark that uses a heterogeneous complex schema on a large DBLP corpus. © 2021, CC BY.

A sliding mode controller design for thermal comfort in buildings

One of the factors determining comfort in buildings is the indoor air temperature of the rooms. A control system, part of the home automation system, should stabilise air temperature to the desired level, despite various disturbances such as the presence of random or occasional sources of heat. Inaccurate models of the dynamics of air temperature changes in buildings prescribe the use of robust control methods, a type of which is the sliding mode controller. This article presents the application of a sliding mode controller (SMC) to home automation systems, designed to control air temperature inside a building. The sliding-mode controller makes use of sliding surfaces, which are defined by the assumed trajectory and the system output. The control law is designed in such a way that the trajectory of the system tends to the sliding surface from any initial point and remains on it after reaching the sliding surface. In this article, a model at air temperature change dynamics inside a building is presented. The modelling approach relies on the lumped-parameter methodology, in which distributed physical properties are represented by lumped parameters (such as thermal capacity or resistance). The model takes into account the loss of heat through conduction and ventilation, as well as internal heat gain. The parameters of the model can be obtained easily from the thermal properties of the construction materials. Theoretical considerations were applied in simulation experiments and the results of these experiments confirm the performance improvement achieved by the proposed solutions. © 2019, Polish Academy of sciences. Metastasis driven by cancer cell migration is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. It involves significant changes in the organization of the cytoskeleton, which includes the actin microfilaments and the vimentin intermediate filaments. Understanding how these filament change cells from normal to invasive offers insights that can be used to improve cancer diagnosis and therapy. We have developed a computational, transparent, large-scale and imaging-based pipeline, that can distinguish between normal human cells and their isogenically matched, oncogenically transformed, invasive and metastasizing counterparts, based on the spatial organization of actin and vimentin filaments in the cell cytoplasm. Due to the intricacy of these subcellular structures, manual annotation is not trivial to automate. We used established deep learning methods and our new multi-attention channel architecture. To ensure a high level of interpretability of the network, which is crucial for the application area, we developed an interpretable global explainable approach correlating the weighted geometric mean of the total cell images and their local GradCam scores. The methods offer detailed, objective and measurable understanding of how different components of the cytoskeleton contribute to metastasis, insights that can be used for future development of novel diagnostic tools, such as a nanometer level, vimentin filament-based biomarker for digital pathology, and for new treatments that significantly can increase patient survival. © 2024
