This paper describes a formation of hybrid coatings on a Ti-2Ta-3Zr-36Nb *** is accomplished by plasma electrolytic oxidation and a dip-coating technique with poly(adipic anhydride)((C6H8O3)n)that is loaded with drugs:amoxicillin(C16H19N3O5S),cefazolin(C14H14N8O4S3)or vancomycin(C66H75Cl2N9O24·xHCl).The characteristic microstructure of the polymer was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and confocal *** on the surface treatment,the surface roughness varied(between 1.53μm and 2.06μm),and the wettability was change with the over of time.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the oxide layer did not affect the polymer layer or loaded ***,the drugs lose their stability in a phosphate-buffered saline solution after 6.5 h of exposure,and its decrease was greater than 7%(HPLC analysis).The stability,drug release and concentration of the drug loaded into the material were precisely analyzed by high-performance liquid *** results correlated with the degradation of the polymer in which the addition of drugs caused the percent of degraded polymer to be between 35.5%and 49.4%after 1 h of material immersion,depending on the mass of the loaded drug and various biological responses that were ***,all of the coatings were cytocompatible with MG-63 osteoblast-like *** drug concentrations released from the coatings were sufficient to inhibit adhesion of reference and clinical bacterial strains(***).The coatings with amoxicillin showed the best results in the bacterial inhibition zone,whereas coatings with cefazolin inhibited adhesion of the above bacteria on the surface.

Optimization-based on-road path planning for articulated vehicles

Maneuvering an articulated vehicle on narrow road stretches is often a challenging task for a human driver. Unless the vehicle is accurately steered, parts of the vehicle’s bodies may exceed its assigned drive lane, resulting in an increased risk of collision with surrounding traffic. In this work, an optimization-based path-planning algorithm is proposed targeting on-road driving scenarios for articulated vehicles composed of a tractor and a trailer. To this end, we model the tractor-trailer vehicle in a road-aligned coordinate frame suited for on-road planning. Based on driving heuristics, a set of different optimization objectives is proposed, with the overall goal of designing a path planner that computes paths which minimize the off-track of the vehicle bodies swept area, while remaining on the road and avoiding collision with obstacles. The proposed optimization-based path-planning algorithm, together with the different optimization objectives, is evaluated and analyzed in simulations on a set of complicated and practically relevant on-road planning scenarios using the most challenging tractor-trailer dimensions. The paper presents current cybersecurity issues in industrial automation and control systems (IACS). It also reviews the state of the art in literature, standards and frameworks used to evaluate and certify industrial control devices. Nowadays the Common Criteria (CC) security assurance methodology is commonly used for the vast majority of information technology (IT) products but not for IACS components. The paper proposes a security evaluation method of IACS to be based on the CC approach. The CC standard has not been used in industry so far and this is why it became the main motivation of the author’s doctoral research work in that field. The implementation of CC security requirements can enhance the "safety" of functional features in control devices by adding "security" measures typical of IT products. The paper delivers input information to the first stage of the author’s research whose goal is the identification of design needs and requirements for building the security evaluation method. As a result, in the next stage, the evaluation method can be built according to the model of a control system and to the criteria taken from the CC standard adjusted to IACS needs. Coupling both "security" and "safety" for industrial control systems is a promising way of using the CC assurance methodology for a new kind of devices. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2019.

The European eSafety initiative aims to improve the safety and efficiency of road transport. The main element of eSafety is the pan-European eCall project—an in-vehicle system which idea is to inform about road collisions or serious accidents. As estimated by the European Commission, the implemented system will reduce services’ response time by 40%. This will save 2,500 people a year. In 2015, the European Parliament adopted the legislation that from the end of March 2018 all new cars from the EU should be equipped with the eCall system. The limitation of this idea is that only small part of cars driven in UE are brand new (about 3.7% brand new cars were sold in 2015). This paper presents the first concept of an onboard eCall device which can be installed at the owners’ request in used vehicles. The proposed system will be able to detect a road accident, indicate the number of vehicle’s occupants, report their vital functions, and send that information to dedicated emergency services via duplex communication channel. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

Driving heavy-duty vehicles, such as buses and tractor-trailer vehicles, is a difficult task in comparison to passenger cars. Most research on motion planning for autonomous vehicles has focused on passenger vehicles, and many unique challenges associated with heavy-duty vehicles remain open. However, recent works have started to tackle the particular difficulties related to on-road motion planning for buses and tractor-trailer vehicles using numerical optimization approaches. In this work, we propose a framework to design an optimization objective to be used in motion planners. Based on geometric derivations, the method finds the optimal trade-off between the conflicting objectives of centering different axles of the vehicle in the lane. For the buses, we consider the front and rear axles trade-off, whereas for articulated vehicles, we consider the tractor and trailer rear axles trade-off. Our results show that the proposed design strategy produces planned paths that considerably improve the behavior of heavy-duty vehicles by keeping the whole vehicle body in the center of the lane.

Optimal multiple underwater target localization and tracking using two surface acoustic ranging sensors ⁎

In many scientific and commercial missions at sea, it is of crucial importance to localize one ore more targets underwater. This objective meets with difficulties due to the unavailability of GPS underwater and the high cost of the equipment classically used for target localization. For these reasons, there has been a surge of interest in the problem of range-based underwater target localization, defined as that of localizing a group of unknown (fixed/moving) targets resorting to surface vehicles (called trackers) equipped with sensors capable of measuring their distances to the targets. In this setup, the surface sensor nodes should be placed according to some optimality criterion aimed at maximizing the information available for target tracking. In addition, the number of sensor nodes should be kept to a minimum in order to avoid the use of a complex and expensive network of vehicles that must be positioned and controlled in a coordinated manner. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper we study the problem of multiple target localization using two trackers and present a constructive method to generate a family of optimal waypoints for the trackers. The use of two surface sensors is motivated by the fact that a single surface sensor does not provide enough positioning accuracy for multiple target localization simultaneously. For two and three targets, we provide a family of analytical solutions for optimal sensor node placements. Further, the proposed solutions can be extended to more than three targets under some well-defined constraints on the target configuration. The optimal sensor positions are derived by maximizing the determinants of appropriately defined Fisher information matrices associated with each of the targets. It is shown that the optimal sensor configuration thus obtained lends itself to an interesting and useful geometrical interpretation. Simulation examples illustrate the results derived. © 2018

Bifurcation analysis of a hybrid continuous stirred tank reactor with imperfect mixing in the cooling jacket

The paper discusses the effects of imperfect mixing on the dynamical behaviour of a partially simulated jacketed reactor. In the partially simulated exothermic reactor, the reactor jacket and vessel are real, but the chemical reactor is simulated by using a mathematical model and electric heaters to generate the reaction heat. The hybrid plant can be used as a benchmark plant for testing control algorithms, which is more realistic case than numerical simulations. It is experimentally shown that the coolant in the jacket is not well-mixed, while the main vessel content is well-mixed by using a recycle pump. Treating flow rate of coolant F j as the main bifurcation parameter, we study the effect of internal recycle flow rate in the jacket on the number of steady-states and dynamical behaviour of the hybrid plant. It is shown that the imperfect mixing in the jacket is not as significant as the imperfect mixing in the main reactor vessel. The obtained results also show that for a given mixing conditions in the jacket, the reactor jacket model can be simplified by assuming perfect mixing conditions.

Defect engineering in metal oxides presents a promising approach for tailoring material properties. This strategy enhances gas sorption, catalysis, and control over key physical characteristics such as bandgap, magnetic behavior, and electrical conductivity. Despite its potential, the role of defect engineering in advancing metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas-sensing performance remains underexplored. This review introduces defect engineering strategies, emphasizing their applications in gas sensing. Gas sensors play a vital role in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, healthcare, and in improving energy efficiency. The demand for advanced gas sensors has never been more critical, given the need for real-time, accurate, and cost-effective detection of pollutant gases. MOS-based gas sensors are widely used in air quality monitoring, industrial safety, and health diagnostics. Vacancies and defect architectures in MOS have been widely studied for their role in sensing performance, as they fundamentally influence sensor efficiency. The effectiveness of MOS sensors largely depends on the type and concentration of defects. This review introduces vacancies and defects in MOS, followed by an in-depth discussion of defect types, factors influencing defect formation, and their role in charge transport. Additionally, it examines the correlation between elemental chemical properties and defect chemistry. Special attention is given to the defect chemistry of metal oxides, including TiO₂, ZnO, Co₃O₄, ZrO₂, WO₃, and CeO₂. It concludes with an examination of surface engineering methods for defect control to improve gas-sensing capabilities. © 2024

The field of assistive robotics is gaining traction in both research as well as industry communities. However, capabilities of existing robotic platforms still require improvements in order to implement meaningful human-robot interactions. We report on the design and implementation of an external system that significantly augments the person detection, tracking and identification capabilities of the Pepper robot. We perform a qualitative analysis of the improvements achieved by each system module under different interaction conditions and evaluate the whole system on hand of a scenario for elderly care assistance. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.
