Active metamaterials are engineered structures that possess novel properties that can be changed after the point of manufacture. Their novel properties arise predominantly from their physical structure, as opposed to their chemical composition and can be changed through means such as direct energy addition into wave paths, or physically changing/morphing the structure in response to both a user or environmental input. Active metamaterials are currently of wide interest to the physics community and encompass a range of sub-domains in applied physics (e.g. photonic, microwave, acoustic, mechanical, etc.). They possess the potential to provide solutions that are more suitable to specific applications, or which allow novel properties to be produced which cannot be achieved with passive metamaterials, such as time-varying or gain enhancement effects. They have the potential to help solve some of the important current and future problems faced by the advancement of modern society, such as achieving net-zero, sustainability, healthcare and equality goals. Despite their huge potential, the added complexity of their design and operation, compared to passive metamaterials creates challenges to the advancement of the field, particularly beyond theoretical and lab -based experiments. This roadmap brings together experts in all types of active metamaterials and across a wide range of areas of applied physics. The objective is to provide an overview of the current state of the art and the associated current/future challenges, with the hope that the required advances identified create a roadmap for the future advancement and application of this field. The main goal of the paper is to study the equilibria of a nonlinear system, proving the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium point in the positive ortant. We also provide numerically tractable conditions (by using Linear Matrix Inequalities techniques) to check the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point. An illustrative numerical example is closing the paper along with some conclusions. © 2018, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

Wrist tremor suppression based on repetitive control with multi-muscle electrical stimulation ⁎

Tremor is a rhythmic, alternating swing motion caused by involuntary repetition of muscle contraction and relaxation. Although it does not endanger life, it will make the work and daily life of patients difficult. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been shown as a promising technique for tremor suppression. Wrist motion is produced by a group of muscles in a collective and coordinate way. However, existing FES-based design methods mostly aim at one pair of muscles associated with the wrist motion, thus limiting the performance of tremor suppression. Furthermore, the possible high level of stimulation required for a single muscle pair can also accelerate muscle fatigue of the patients. To address these problems, this paper uses multiple muscles FES to suppress tremor by fully considering the properties of wrist motion. This paper develops a wrist musculoskeletal model with Hammerstein structure, identifies its parameters, and proposes repetitive controllers based on frequency modified inverse algorithm to suppress tremor. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate its advantages over single muscle stimulation based tremor suppression.

This paper deals with a shunt active power filter (SAPF) integrated in a photovoltaic (PV) system, which is interfaced to the grid via a double-stage configuration, for simultaneously improving the power quality in the existence of non-linear loads and injecting the PV harvested power to the power grid. The direct power control (DPC) based on the conventional Proportional-integral (PI) suffers from some shortcomings in the transient state, such as large overshoots and undershoots in the voltage. Long response time is another disadvantage when using such a controller. To overcome this situation, the proposed control method is equipped by an anti windup fractional order proportional-integral differentiator (AW-FOPID) regulator, replacing the standard PI or PID regulators to maintain the DC link voltage at its desired value with small overshoots and undershoots in the voltage, while maintaining a short response time. The AW-FOPID controller, however, has five parameters, which makes it troublesome to tune. Accordingly, to adjust this AW-FOPID parameters, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed by minimizing the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE). Furthermore, an intelligent algorithm for tracking the maximum power point (MPPT) based on fuzzy logic has been applied to eventually resolve the drawback of the rapidly changing weather conditions. The overall control scheme is examined by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink software. The obtained simulation results and comparative study demonstrate the feasibility and performance of this control strategy. © 2020 International Information and Engineering Technology Association. The massive student participation in computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) sessions from online classrooms requires intense tutor engagement to track and evaluate individual student participation. In this study, we investigate how the time evolution of messages predicts students’ participation using two models - a linear regression and a Random Forest model. A corpus of 10 chats involving 47 students was scored by 4 human experts and used to evaluate our models. Our analysis shows that students’ pauses length between consecutive messages within a discussion is the strongest participation predictor accounting for R2 =. 796 variance in the human estimations while using a Random Forest model. Our results provide an extended basis for the automated assessment of student participation in collaborative online discussions. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2019.

Defect engineering in metal oxides presents a promising approach for tailoring material properties. This strategy enhances gas sorption, catalysis, and control over key physical characteristics such as bandgap, magnetic behavior, and electrical conductivity. Despite its potential, the role of defect engineering in advancing metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas-sensing performance remains underexplored. This review introduces defect engineering strategies, emphasizing their applications in gas sensing. Gas sensors play a vital role in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, healthcare, and in improving energy efficiency. The demand for advanced gas sensors has never been more critical, given the need for real-time, accurate, and cost-effective detection of pollutant gases. MOS-based gas sensors are widely used in air quality monitoring, industrial safety, and health diagnostics. Vacancies and defect architectures in MOS have been widely studied for their role in sensing performance, as they fundamentally influence sensor efficiency. The effectiveness of MOS sensors largely depends on the type and concentration of defects. This review introduces vacancies and defects in MOS, followed by an in-depth discussion of defect types, factors influencing defect formation, and their role in charge transport. Additionally, it examines the correlation between elemental chemical properties and defect chemistry. Special attention is given to the defect chemistry of metal oxides, including TiO₂, ZnO, Co₃O₄, ZrO₂, WO₃, and CeO₂. It concludes with an examination of surface engineering methods for defect control to improve gas-sensing capabilities. © 2024

Single trial ERP amplitudes reveal the time course of acquiring representations of novel faces in individual participants

The neural correlates of face individuation – the acquisition of memory representations for novel faces – have been studied only in coarse detail and disregarding individual differences between learners. In their seminal study, (Tanaka, Curran, Porterfield, & Collins, 2006) required the identification of a particular novel face across 70 trials and found that the N250 component in the ERP became more negative from the first to the second half of the experiment, where it reached a similar amplitude as a well-known face. We were unable to directly replicate this finding in our study when we used the original spilt of trials. However, when we applied a different split of trials we observed very similar changes in N250 amplitude. Then, we developed and applied a new two-step explorative-confirmative non-parametric method based on permutation testing to determine the time course of face individuation in individual participants based on single trial N250 amplitudes. We show that the assumption of a steep initial increase of N250 amplitude across multiple presentations of the target face, followed by a plateau, yields plausible results in fitting linear trends for most participants. The transition point from initial acquisition to the plateau phase differed strongly between participants and tended to be earlier when performance in target face recognition was better. Hence, face individuation may be accounted for by a biphasic process of early, fast acquisition, followed by a slower, asymptotic consolidation or maintenance phase. The current approach might be fruitfully applied to further investigations into face individuation and their neural correlates. © 2020, CC BY-NC-ND.

Modular reconfigurable robots are touted for their flexibility, as their bodies can assume a wide range of shapes. A particular challenge is to make them move efficiently in 3D without compromising the scalability of the system. This paper proposes decentralized and fully reactive controllers for pose control of 3D modular reconfigurable robots. The robots operate in liquid environments, and move by routing fluid through themselves. Each module uses only two bits of sensory information per face. Additionally, the modules can use up to five bits of information that are exchanged via shared power lines. We prove that robots of convex shape are guaranteed to reach a goal object with a preferred orientation. Using computer simulations of Modular Hydraulic Propulsion robots, all controllers are assessed for different environments, system sizes and noise, and their performances compared against a centralized controller. Given the simplicity of the solutions, modules could be realized at scales below a millimeter-cube, where robots of high spatial resolution could perform accurate movements in 3D liquid environments.

Performance evaluation for CRUD operations in asynchronously replicated document oriented database

NoSQL databases are becoming increasingly popular as more developers seek new ways for storing information. The popularity of these databases has risen due to their flexibility and scalability needed in domains like Big Data and Cloud Computing. This paper examines asynchronous replication, one of the key features for a scalable and flexible system. Three of the most popular Document-Oriented Databases, MongoDB, CouchDB, and Couchbase, are examined. For testing, the execution time for CRUD operations for a single database instance and for a distributed environment with two nodes is taken into account and the results are compared with tests outcomes obtained for three relational database management systems: Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
