Diagnosing neurological disorders and tracking rehabilitation progress requires objective, quantitative measures. Isokinetic exercises are commonly employed to evaluate muscle strength and activity. However, repetitive, quantitative assessment of the tests performed during these exercises can be difficult, especially for patients with neurological disorders. Usually, either dynamometric or sEMG measurements are used. This study is concerned with the evaluation of the applicability and reliability of these two measurement techniques, based on analysis of elbow flexion and extension supported by the Luna EMG rehabilitation robot, aimed at the evaluation of the activity of the biceps and triceps muscles. Dynamometric and surface electromyography measurements are compared with respect to their repeatability between sessions and days, and their ability to differentiate impaired limbs from healthy ones. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Detecting anomalies in satellite telemetry data is pivotal in ensuring its safe operations. Although there exist various data-driven techniques for the task of determining abnormal parts of the signal, they are virtually never validated over real telemetries. Analyzing such data is challenging due to its intrinsic characteristics, as telemetry may be noisy and affected by incorrect acquisition, resulting in missing parts of the signal. In this paper, we tackle this issue and propose a machine learning approach for detecting anomalies in single-channel satellite telemetry. To validate its capabilities in a practical scenario, we build a dataset capturing the nominal and anomalous telemetry data captured on board OPS-SAT—a nanosatellite launched and operated by the European Space Agency. Our extensive experimental study showed that the proposed algorithm offers high-quality anomaly detection in real-life satellite telemetry, reaching 98.4% accuracy over the unseen test set. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is critical in evolving 5G and developing 6G networks, running on edge devices, and solving resource management challenges. The burgeoning number of edge devices draws attention to the potential of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks with their onboard computing capabilities for edge inference. This paper explores LEO scenarios where multiple remote sensing edge AI inference tasks concurrently process data from a single source. However, due to there being parts with the same functions between different AI applications, traditional monolithic edge AI architecture must be deployed repeatedly and falls short in efficiently harnessing the heterogeneous resources of LEO satellite networks. To solve this problem, we utilize the microservice architecture to decouple a single AI application into several independent microservices to reuse these same functions. However, due to the high latency caused by multiple microservices’ communication, we need to design a deployment strategy to fully utilize resources to reduce the service latency. We present a microservice deployment model to minimize the total service latency across all AI applications and meet resource constraints with the constraints of hardware, energy, and memory limitations. This latency optimization problem is rewritten as a Markov decision process (MDP) to effectively deal with the challenge posed by the time-varying transmission rate caused by satellite mobility. To increase the training data utilization, we employ a Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) based reinforcement learning algorithm to meet the dynamic environment challenge. Finally, we obtain a sub-optimal solution with minimal accuracy loss and an acceptable solution time.

Our paper introduces a novel structural health monitoring (SHM) framework for preexisting surveillance camera video footage towards an automated structural engineering e-governance system in a smart city. We test our framework on a sample pole structure using a high-resolution camera and an off-the-shelf phone camera. A preliminary study suggests the efficacy of using the framework in monitoring noticeable degradation and aging in large structures in periodically captured images. Our framework is dissimilar to computer vision techniques in which deformation patterns are recognized;instead, our framework is purposed as a long term observation application in which large structures in public video surveillance footage is monitored for changes that may suggest signs of aging or degradation of a structure over a long period of time. We posit that this novel framework, with emerging technology and innovation, can pave the way to combine artificial intelligence and smart structural health monitoring techniques in a widespread, unprecedented way of ensuring safe public structures in smart cities. © 2021 IEEE.

This research focuses on exploring the exponential $$H_\infty $$ stability of general conformable nonlinear system. In order to address the nonlinearity inherent in the system, a polynomial fuzzy (PF) method is employed. Modeling a general conformable nonlinear system within the polynomial framework reduces the number of fuzzy rules compared to the classical Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy (TSF). Furthermore, controlling such a complex system, which accounts for perturbations, employs a PF model instead TSF model to describe its nonlinear dynamics, and incorporates a general conformable derivative instead of an integer-order one, is significantly more challenging, and remains unaddressed in previous studies. In this paper, a PF controller is designed in the form of sum of squares (SOS) to enhance the resilience against perturbations and ensure the exponential stability of the proposed model. The proposed SOS can be solved numerically, and partially symbolically, using the recently developed SOSTOOLS. In order to ensure the $$H_\infty $$ performance, a generalized criterion is defined for the general conformable nonlinear system. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a numerical example is provided.

Cell-free Massive MIMO systems consist of a large number of geographically distributed access points (APs) that serve the users by coherent joint transmission. The spectral efficiency (SE) achieved by each user depends on the power allocation: which APs that transmit to which users and with what power. In this article, we revisit the max-min and sum-SE power allocation policies, which have previously been approached using high-complexity general-purpose solvers. We develop and compare several different high-performance low-complexity power allocation algorithms that are appropriate for use in large systems. We propose two new algorithms for sum-SE power optimization inspired by weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) minimization and fractional programming (FP). Further, one new FP-based algorithm is proposed for max-min fair power allocation. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is used to solve specific convex subproblems in the proposed algorithms. Our ADMM reformulations lead to multiple small-sized subproblems with closed-form solutions. The proposed algorithms find global or local optimal power allocation solutions for large-scale systems but with reduced computational time compared to previous work. © 2020 IEEE.

This study proposes methods that can be used to examine and interpret comments that users have made after watching videos on YouTube on a particular topic. YouTube tutorials are very popular among young people. They have become an important pillar in informal education, thus contributing to the rapid acquisition of skills and knowledge. Under these circumstances, we were interested in analysing the YouTube videos comments, knowing that the platform has a continuous increase in popularity, which is also due to the opportunities of sharing them. Since ChatGPT-themed YouTube videos have seen a significant surge in popularity since 2022, we were interested to analyse some videos that approach the topics of “ChatGPT, AI clone, AI robot and Deep Learning.”

Faults and errors are common in the execution of digital controllers on top of embedded hardware. Researchers from the embedded system domain devised models to understand and bound the occurrence of these faults. Using these models, control researchers have demonstrated robustness properties of control systems, and of their corresponding digital implementations. In this paper, we build a framework to experiment with the injection of faults in a networked control system that regulates the behaviour of a Furuta pendulum. We use the software framework to experiment on computational problems that cause the control signals not to be available on time, and network faults that cause dropped packets during the transmission of sensor data and actuator commands.

This research paper delves into the application of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks within the Benchmark Simulation Model No. 2 (BSM2) to enhance the predictability and efficiency of wastewater treatment processes. The study aims to develop advanced predictive models that can simulate the dynamics of wastewater treatment more accurately and adjust operational strategies dynamically. By integrating LSTM networks, the research enables continuous prediction of Effluent Quality Index (EQI) variables under stochastic and deterministic scenarios, thereby improving the accuracy and efficiency of predicting pollutant levels. The research uses an LSTM model to learn from a comprehensive dataset derived from historical simulations of BSM2, where key parameters such as the oxygen transfer coefficient (K L a) are systematically varied to measure their impact on effluent quality. The LSTM's capability to handle complex, nonlinear data and its adaptability to time series forecasting significantly enhances model performance, offering a robust tool for real-time decision-making and process optimization in wastewater treatment facilities. This approach not only improves the accuracy and efficiency of predicting pollutant levels but also supports environmental compliance and operational sustainability, making it a valuable tool for environmental engineers and professionals in the field of wastewater treatment.

Insights into automation of construction process using parallel-kinematic manipulators

This article discusses challenges, experiences and lessons learned so far while transforming a masonry build system based mostly on manual labour into a robot automated build system. Our motivation for selection of this masonry process is to try out how robot automation could impact the architects in their design work by providing a tool to directly manipulate wall expression down to individual brick level. Such manipulation is often much too costly for manual labour today. Moreover, masonry is a challenging application to automate. Understanding the manual processes involved and transforming them into automation equivalents faces several challenges; among them handling and distribution of the different materials involved, selection of tooling, sensing for handling of variation and digital tooling for the programming of the process. A novel parallel-kinematic manipulator (PKM) with computerized numerical control (CNC) is used as target for experiments, because the performance properties in stiffness, workspace and accuracy will allow us to extend work into further construction processes involving heavy and dirty manual labour.
