Nowadays, the volume of data collected from online activity is continuously growing, starting from ecommerce websites, mobile applications or even IoT devices and sensors. All this data must be processed by more and more complex Big Data applications that gather and provide most useful information out of it. Consequently, the storage systems have evolved to keep up with all these changes, transitioning from traditional Data warehouses to Data Lakes and now to Lakehouses. All these applications consist of various transformations on stored data that result in another improved version of it, enriched with some new knowledge that brings value to the user. Based on the type of transformation, one can distinguish at least two types. The first can be simply executed on demand at runtime to get some insights from the collected data, such as the events count or some aggregated reports. The other type is more complex by its nature because it involves some complex processing of that data solely or in conjunction with other data. So, the result of such a transformation is both expensive and not feasible to be computed at runtime every time it is needed. Therefore, it must be persisted on storage once it is computed and then, kept up to date with the latest changes. This persisted computed version of the data is named materialized view, and multiple materialized views can be chained in data pipelines if the result of one transformation represents the input of the next one. Replication is the mechanism that adds lineage semantics to the materialized view transformation, independent of how many chained materialized views are kept, such as in the case of the bronzesilver-gold tables in the medallion architecture. Cloud computing can be an useful tool when dealing with spatially distributed resources, which need to be simultaneously managed. In this work, a simulation environment is developed using OpenStack to apply a Distributed Model Predictive control strategy for a platooning application consisting of multiple autonomous mobile robots. The idea is to develop the entire algorithm by taking advantage of the possibility of creating virtual machines. Thus, each autonomous mobile robot is treated as an individual agent and is modeled and controlled on a virtual machine, whereas the communication between the agents is performed in the cloud, using the TCP/IP protocol standard. The simulation results illustrate that the platooning application deployed in OpenStack outperforms the simulation performed on a single computer.

Hydraulic system comprehension forms the pillar of numerous engineering fields; however, its academic assimilation remains intricate. Addressing this, our research introduces a digital twin-enabled virtual hydraulic workstation simulator developed in Automation Studio™. This simulator mirrors a tangible hydraulic workstation, including its multifaceted components, to enhance the pedagogical paradigm of hydraulic education. We ensure the symbiosis of theoretical understanding and practical application by meticulously modeling 3D hydraulic components and executing analogous simulations. Our key findings spotlight the utility of time-dependent system behavior graphs in bolstering educational insights. The paper underscores the significance of digital twin solutions in university programs, mainly when physical resources are scarce, reinforcing educational technology’s potential to facilitate student engagement in technically dense arenas.

In the present paper, we investigate the impact of imperfections (non-idealities) of the energy storage system (e.g., batteries, capacitors, or supercapacitors) on the energy performance of green IoT nodes. In particular, we investigate the impact of energy leakage from the Energy Storage System (ESS) on important energy performance metrics, such as service outage probability, the density of the lifetime of the node, and the time-dependent mean number of energy packets (EPs) in the ESS. Also, we explore various strategies that can be employed to compensate for the impact of energy losses due to energy leakage on the energy performance metrics. Specifically, we examine two potential strategies for improving the energy performance of the IoT nodes: (i) through increasing the energy generation rate of the energy harvesters (e.g., by adding additional solar panels or replacing the existing solar panels with more efficient ones that can produce more energy), and (ii) through reducing the energy consumption rate of the IoT node (e.g., by configuring ESS energy thresholds below which the nodes are forced to operate in low energy consumption states).

This paper addresses the problem of planning the motion of a mobile robot that has to visit some points of interest, each point having a specific time interval in which it can be reached. The robot is omnidirectional and it evolves with constant speed in an environment cluttered with polygonal obstacles. In the case of no obstacles, the problem would be a Travelling Salesman Problem with Time Window (TSPTW) constraints. Our solution is innovative by enabling obstacles for TSPTW scenarios, and it accomplishes this by coupling visibility graphs, graph reduction and mathematical programming. The method first constructs a visibility graph based on the obstacles and points to be visited, and then it maps this graph to another graph whose nodes correspond only to robot’s initial position and points of interest. Finally, a TSPTW problem is solved on the reduced graph by using a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) mathematical formulation, and the solution is projected to the initial environment. The solution development is accompanied by illustrative numerical simulations.

Pipelines are the most convenient ways to transport fluids (e.g., water, oil, and gas). However, leakage of fluids into the environment results in resource wastage (primarily water, which is becoming a scarce resource) and environmental pollution (in the case of leakage of toxic fluids like oil and gas). Emerging technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Artificial Intelligence (AI), distributed computing, and cloud computing enable continuous monitoring of pipelines to detect leakages and corrosion on the pipeline. The main challenge with using battery-powered sensor nodes to monitor pipelines is the energy constraint, necessitating frequent battery replacement. Thus, there is a need to develop energy-saving mechanisms to prolong the lifetime of these sensor nodes. In this paper, we use the diffusion approximation modelling framework in which the data from the experimental testbed are used to model the dynamics of the battery’s energy content and to estimate the mean and variance of the device’s lifetime. The novelty in the proposed diffusion model of the battery of an IoT node is the introduction of multiple energy thresholds that split the energy state-space of the battery into multiple energy-saving regimes. As the battery discharges, the node gradually transitions into energy-saving regimes by reconfiguring some of its parameters to reduce energy consumption (sometimes at the cost of trading off some performance metrics). We investigate the impact of energy-saving regimes or the number of thresholds on the node’s lifetime.

The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance of PID control for our society in general and for the control engineering community in particular. To this end, we first equate the relevance of PID controllers with other inventions in history to remark how PID control has contributed to revolutionizing our world as the main ambassador of the automatic control field. Afterwards, the PID control resilience is provided by showing a brief historical evolution to realize its timely adaptation, and how nowadays it is much more than just the three terms; P, I, and D. Moreover, it is summarized how PID control has been demonstrated to be equivalent to other optimal control solutions and how the recurrent comparison with Model Predictive control (MPC) is not necessary at all, as both control algorithms should be considered as complementary approaches. Finally, encouragements and suggestions are summarized to continue working on PID control topics.

In response to the escalating demand for electricity, the aging process and inherent failures in power lines have become unavoidable challenges in their operational integrity. This research addresses the imperative need for a robust method to detect damage in power insulator disc images, introducing a novel feature extraction technique grounded in color intensity profile transformation and ensemble learning. For the purposes of the research, a specific dataset was developed based on publicly available images of power insulators. The collection consists of 9232 images of insulator discs which included 2184 images of damaged discs. The discernible damages include breakages and burnouts. Two distinct analysis variants were employed. In the first variant (V1), two classification groups were selected: disc with damages and disc without damages. In the second variant (V2), three classification groups were selected: discs without damage, broken discs, and burnout discs. The described research was divided into two successive stages. In the first of them (S1), the transformed color intensity profiles for the prepared data set were built and various machine learning models for their classification were trained and evaluated. In the next stage (S2), previously developed, highest efficient machine learning models, were used to make the detection of various damaged types of overhead line insulator discs. For the first stage of research high-performance results and a high value of the F1 score parameters were obtained (F1 score = 0.999 for the first variant (S1V1) and F1 score = 0.992 for the second variant (S1V2). In the second stage of research and the first variant (S2V1), the highest result of the F1 score was 0.932 and for the second variant (S2V2) F1 score was 0.930. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This contribution describes the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods for the lexical analysis of requirements for control, sensors, and information systems in the Agriculture 4.0 domain. The analysis is presented on an orchard 4.0 *** proposed orchard includes a sensor network (containing mainly measurements of hydrometeorological and soil variables), camera monitoring of conditions, and yield, support for autonomous robotic care and harvesting based on machine vision, prediction of appropriate times for interventions, etc. Requirements specification for mentioned system is written in natural language.A sentence splitting, Tokenization, Lemmatization, and POS (Part-of-Speech) tagging methods are applied to the mentioned structured requirements of the system and Use Case description. From these and by means of NLP, the candidates of classes, attributes, operations, and associations of the UML (Unified Modeling Language) class diagram are filtered and the UML model is synthesized. This paper presents the application of software engineering methods to support the development of complex heterogeneous sensors, information, and control systems.

This paper proposes a real-time distributed operational architecture to coordinate integrated transmission and distribution systems (ITD). At the distribution system level, the distribution system operator (DSO) calculates the aggregated flexibility of all controllable devices by power-energy envelopes and provides them to the transmission system operator (TSO). At the transmission system level, a distributed nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) approach is proposed to coordinate the economic dispatch of multiple TSOs, considering the aggregated flexibility of all distribution systems. The subproblems of the proposed approach are associated with different TSOs and individual time periods. In addition, the aggregated flexibility of controllable devices in distribution networks is encapsulated, re-calculated, and communicated through the power-energy envelopes, facilitating a reduction in computational complexity and eliminating redundant information exchanges between TSOs and DSOs, thereby enhancing privacy and security. The framework's effectiveness and applicability in real-world scenarios are validated through simulated operational scenarios on a summer day in Germany, highlighting its robustness in the face of significant prediction mismatches due to severe weather conditions.
