Smart buildings viewed as cyber-physical systems are currently a growing research topic oriented towards collaborative groups of buildings. Since buildings consume significant amount of energy, research efforts have concentrated to make them more efficient, in particular the Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems that represent more than 40% of the buildings' energy budget. A key piece of information that facilitates the design of energy efficient HVAC systems, in particular in commercial buildings, is the knowledge of the real-time and predicted occupancy, which would allow an automatic control process to balance the trade-off between energy use and quality of comfort. In practice however, occupancy counting devices are not being wide-spread deployed in the market, so in order to move forward, we believe it is important to estimate occupancy using existing sensors currently deployed in buildings. In this work, we propose to use a combination of sensor data currently available in buildings, such as CO 2 data and airflow, and develop a supervised learning framework that uses existing data to estimate occupancy. We developed two data-driven techniques based on Random Forest (RF) and KNN algorithms to estimate occupancy based on data collected from 4 rooms. Our results show an average RMSE occupancy error that varies from 3.10 to 11.21 for RF (depending on the room) and 2.96 to 8.46 for KNN, with best case results of 1.08 and 0.97 respectively. We believe that our framework can be integrated into existing Building Management Systems (BMS) control processes to improve energy efficiency in smart buildings.

Background: Systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring Systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to Systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. Results: This glossary aims at being a first aid kit for the Systems Medicine researcher facing an unfamiliar term, where he/she can get a first understanding of them, and, more importantly, examples and references for digging into the topic. © Massimiliano Zanin et al., 2021;Published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. 2021.

In this paper the authors introduced a concept of a standalone device able to recognize some of the emotions of people walking towards a robot, before they even approach it. The early emotion recognition is being used for preparation and recompilation of the robot's conversation tree in order to limit the number of possible phrases by excluding the least judicious ones. An overall system concept was presented, as well as a description of a proof-of-concept practical implementation. Exemplary libraries were installed and executed within an Embedded System, the most useful implementation was described in more detail.

The vast majority of the software developers use the agile framework for project management. Agile approach provides more flexibility and adaption to the changes against classic software development approach. The key methodology of agile approach represents the scrum. The core of scrum management forms sprint, which represents a time shift activity and envelops all other events of scrum. The outcome of the sprint should be the increment in development of the project, which is possible to submit to the customers or the users. The paper maps the possibilities of visualization of the course of individual sprints at everyday meetings of the research team (stand up meetings), which have a decisive influence on the quality of communication of the research team and the overall success of the project. © 2019 VSB-Technical university of Ostrava. This paper concerns solvers for time fractional differential equations in Matlab and Octave. The main analysis revolves around a time step size adaptive solver basing on the numerical method called SubIval. The basis of SubIval is explained and formulae for the step size adaptivity are given. The solver is compared with others basing on: fractional linear multistep methods, product integration rules and the Grunwald-Letnikov approximation.

Liberalization of the electric energy market needs to involve the determination of strategic goals which will enable distribution enterprises to operate in a competitive market, which means that they have to achieve satisfactory economic results. It is imperative to determine the costs of energy distribution, which are significantly influenced by the amount of energy loss. Therefore, the calculation of the energy losses forms very important aspects in exploitation distribution networks and investment. The paper discusses a model of the distribution network and the energy losses calculation method. The potential for the application of the method in assessing the operation of distribution enterprises is presented, which leads to recommendation for the investments strategy.

The article deals with the problems of transferring reliable signals of control and control over the communication channels of complex power supply management systems for production facilities. The discrepancy between the concept of "information reliability" and "information security from interference in the communication channel" is mathematically justified. It is theoretically justified that in order to ensure a high level of the system reliability of equipment state signals in the process of technical diagnostics, it is necessary to combine the procedures for inputting information from sensors with encoding. A method of three-pulse correlation coding based on the coding procedure for all sensors simultaneously in three time-separated stages has been developed. It forms two allowed and four forbidden codes that determine the presence and the type of malfunction or the absence of distortions in the information message. A technique for calculating the system reliability of the signals of the state of electrical equipment characterized by the sum of the probabilities of undetectable distortions of information and undetectable faults of the elements of the entire information delivery route and the component 1,1•10-12 has been proposed. This is several orders of magnitude better than the parameters of modern analogues. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this work the authors of the hereof paper describe pilot study on implementation of fractional order filtering applied for the purpose of disparities detection in Beta Frequencies. The Beta waves frequency range can be split into three sections, where the information provided by particular section enables more accurate medical diagnosis. Spectral analysis used in this study allowed appropriate isolation of the Beta waves. Implementation of non-integer order filtering in such study is innovative and provided some promising results.

In the paper a fast technique of impulsive noise suppression in color images is described. The proposed method is utilizing the concept of digital paths which link the central pixel of a filtering window with its boundary. Each path is assigned a cost and the minimum one is treated as a measure of the central pixel corruption. If the minimum cost of a link between the window center and its boundary is high, then the central pixel is treated as corrupted. The filter output is a weighted average of a pixel and its robust estimate, in which the minimum cost is used for the creation of a soft switching rule for the filter output. The performed experiments revealed excellent properties of the novel approach, especially in case of highly distorted images. The computational complexity of the proposed technique is low and it can be used in real time applications.
