In the paper the impulsive noise suppression algorithms based on arithmetic mean and vector median scheme are concerned. Usually, the performance of the entire filtering process, which includes noisy pixels detection and noise replacement, is presented. However, the aim of the research presented here, is to focus on the noise replacement step alone. The analyzed algorithms process the corrupted images using external knowledge about locations of noisy pixels in two variants: with maps containing true information about noise and those obtained from very efficient impulsive noise detection scheme.

The paper presents the results of experimental investigations on streaming electrification in a swinging cylinder system. Mineral transformer oil is used as a dielectric liquid in which the electrification process occurs. A shuttle system with a swinging cylinder is proposed to study the flow electrification phenomena. Some measurements and analyses are presented in the shuttle system. The analysis includes a determination of the influence of the frequency and amplitude of pendulum oscillation on the electrification signal. The power spectral densities, spectrograms and continuous wavelet transform were also used to assess the frequency and time-frequency characteristics of the measured signals.

In the paper the efficiency of a robust denoising technique whose aim is the suppression of mixed Gaussian and impulsive noise in color images is analyzed. The proposed filtering framework is based on a novel concept of closeness between a sample from a processing block and the local neighborhood (patch) of the pixel, which is being restored. The dissimilarity measure is defined as a sum of squared distances to the most similar pixels of a patch centered at the processed pixel. The filter output is a weighted average of samples from the filtering block and the similarities to the central patch are used as weighting coefficients. To increase the filter robustness, the impulsiveness of pixels in the processing block is also taken into account, which significantly improves the filtering *** novel technique has been compared with the widely used filtering methods and the performed experiments proved its satisfying smoothing properties. The new filter is insensitive to outliers introduced by the impulsive noise process, enhances image edges and preserves details, while efficiently suppressing the Gaussian noise component.

In this paper application of method based on bi-fractional filtering on the Arduino Uno was proposed. The authors showed that the implementation of a non-integer order filter on a micro-controller hardware platform is possible and gives promising results. Another aspect of potential implementation of such systems involves using biomedical data – in particular EEG signals, which were applied during the research carried out for the purpose of this paper. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Queuing theory has been extensively used in the modelling and performance analysis of cloud computing systems. The phenomenon of the task (or request) reneging, that is, the dropping of requests from the request queue often occur in cloud computing systems, and it is important to consider it when developing performance evaluations models for cloud computing infrastructures. Majority of studies in the performance evaluation of cloud computing data centres with the use of queuing theory do not consider the fact that the tasks could be removed from queue without being serviced. The removal of tasks from the queue could be due to the user impatience, execution deadline expiration, security reasons, or as an active queue management strategy. The reneging could be correlated in nature, that is, if a request is dropped (or reneged) at any time epoch, and then there is a probability that a request may or may not be dropped at the next time epoch. This kind of dropping (or reneging) of requests is referred to as correlated request reneging. In this paper we have modelled a cloud computing infrastructure with correlated request reneging using queuing theory. An M/M/1/N queuing model with correlated reneging has been used to study the performance analysis of the load balancing server of a cloud computing system. The steady-state as well as the transient performance analyses have been carried out. Important measures of performance like average queue size, average delay, probability of task blocking, and the probability of no waiting in the queue are studied. Finally, some comparisons are performed which describe the effect of correlated task reneging over simple exponential reneging.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

A low-frequency nonlinear cantilever-beam-type electromagnetic vibration energy harvester is analyzed. The nonlinearity brought into system kinematics by the “magnets-on-magnets” action provides approximately 20 Hz frequency bandwidth. A simulation study based on solution of coupled dynamic equations of motion and equation of electric balance shows that within major part of the bandwidth the system is capable to produces the voltage with magnitude proportional to magnitude and frequency of the excitation force. At very low frequency and large external forces it falls, however into region where it exhibits chaotic behavior. In this paper the impact of the phenomenon on waveform of the generated voltage is analyzed using the Poincare maps and spectrograms. The results prove a detrimental impact of the phenomenon on overall performance of the system. In order to avoid the chaotic operation the impact of the hard-stop barriers of relative displacement is analyzed showing rise of generated power and reduction of a low-frequency limit of the bandwidth.

A new cantilever-beam nonlinear electromagnetic vibration energy harvester with noticeable effects of complex motion composed of relative displacement and torsion of the vibrating element is considered. The analysis of frequency characteristics carried out using the finite element models shows significant differences regarding generated output voltage and frequency bandwidth when detailed 2-d variations of the magnetic force components are taken into account. © 2017 IEEE.
