In this paper, we address the problem of steering the input of a convex function to a value that minimizes the function under a convex constraint. We consider the case where the constraint cannot be violated of more than a user-defined value during the whole transient phase. The mathematical expression of both the cost function and the constraint are assumed to be unknown. The only information available are the on-line values of the cost and the constraint. To tackle this problem, an optimization law, based on a modified-barrier function, and involving the gradient of both the cost function and the constraint, is firstly designed. The Lie bracket formalism is then exploited to approximate this law, by combining time-periodic signals with the on-line measurements of both the cost and the constraint. The stability property of the resulting constrained extremum seeking system is proved, and its effectiveness is shown in simulation. © 2019, IFAC (International Federation of automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. The estimation of unobservable states of a process is important when using control techniques that assume, said a priori, known values. The controllers based on the state space present good behavior and efficiency, even when the dynamics of the process are non-linear. One of the processes with non-linear dynamics and in which not all the states are observable is the case of parabolic trough solar plants. In this work an observer is presented, based on a fuzzy inference system, for the estimation of the temperature profiles of the loops that make up the solar field. This is a English translation of an earlier work presented in the XXXIX Spanish workshop in automatic control [15]. © 2019 IEEE.

A large amount of calibration data is typically needed to train an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCI) due to the non-stationary nature of EEG data. This paper proposes a novel weighted transfer learning algorithm using a dynamic time warping (DTW) based alignment method to alleviate this need by using data from other subjects. DTW-based alignment is first applied to reduce the temporal variations between a specific subject data and the transfer learning data from other subjects. Next, similarity is measured using Kullback Leibler divergence (KL) between the DTW aligned data and the specific subject data. The other subjects' data are then weighted based on their KL similarity to each trials of the specific subject data. This weighted data from other subjects are then used to train the BCI model of the specific subject. An experiment was performed on publicly available BCI Competition IV dataset 2a. The proposed algorithm yielded an average improvement of 9% compared to a subject-specific BCI model trained with 4 trials, and the results yielded an average improvement of 10% compared to naive transfer learning. Overall, the proposed DTW-aligned KL weighted transfer learning algorithm show promise to alleviate the need of large amount of calibration data by using only a short calibration data.

A button battery accidentally ingested by a toddler or small child can cause severe damage to the stomach within a short period of time. Once a battery lands on the surface of the esophagus or stomach, it can run a current in the tissue and induce a chemical reaction resulting in injury. Following our previous work where we presented an ingestible magnetic robot for button battery retrieval, this study presents a remotely achieved novel localization method of a button battery with commonly available magnetic sensors (Hall-effect sensors). By applying a direct magnetic field to the button battery using an electromagnetic coil, the battery is magnetized, and hence it becomes able to be sensed by Hall-effect sensors. Using a trilateration method, we were able to detect the locations of an LR44 button battery and other ferromagnetic materials at variable distances. Additional four electromagnetic coils were used to autonomously navigate a magnet-containing capsule to dislocate the battery from the affected site.

The importance of a mature, maintainable design of automation software in Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPS) is continuously increasing since a growing proportion of the system functionality is implemented via software. As a result, system complexity is shifting more and more towards the software side. Quality characteristics such as flexibility, maintainability, and extensibility, whose importance is increasing in the context of Industry 4.0, are thus becoming harder to achieve. These challenges can only be solved through sound architectural design. While there is a common understanding of good software architecture and appropriate methods to achieve it in computer science, a suitable architecture definition for automation software that takes all relevant factors into account is still missing in the field of CPPS. Therefore, based on a workshop with international scientists with different perspectives on CPPS, this paper presents influencing factors on automation software architecture. On this basis, a joint definition for software architecture in CPPS, as well as challenges and future research potentials, are derived.

Vortex generators (VGs) are used increasingly more by the wind turbine manufacture industry as flow control devices to improve rotor blade aerodynamic performance. The VG height is usually designed with equal thickness of the local boundary layer at the VG position. Nevertheless, these conventional VGs may produce excess residual drag in some applications. The so-called sub boundary layer VGs can provide enough momentum transfer over a region several times their own height for effective flow-separation control with much lower drag. The main objective is to investigate how well the simulations can reproduce the physics of the flow of the primary vortex generated by a triangular VG mounted on a flat plate with negligible pressure gradient with the angle of attack of the vane to the oncoming flow β= 18. Three different device heights H= 5mm, H1= 6,25mm, H2= 4,16mm have been studied and compared both qualitatively and quantitatively. To that end, computational simulations have been carried out using RANS method and at Reynolds number Re = 2600 based on the boundary layer momentum thickness θ= 2.4 mm at the VG position. The computational results show good agreement with the experimental data available in AVATAR project. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.

This work presents a robust MPC (Model Predictive control) approach for reserve balancing in DC microgrid systems under uncertainties like wind power and energy price variations and different types of fault events. The robust MPC algorithm considers a variable-length prediction horizon which accounts for forecasts in energy price and renewable power over one day. Furthermore, a storage system is used to increase the utility of the demands and minimize the energy costs. The algorithm is tested for multiple fault types which affect the system (line and loss of power faults).

This paper focuses on big data in IoT. With the development and popularization of 5G technology, IoT based on 5G technology will be popularized. At the same time, it will increase more use of big data that come from heterogeneous devices. Although it is now a big data era, data from IoT will also explode in future. In these IoT data, the first task that we should do is to mine the related items and to find the association rules. So we proposed an improved frequent items mining algorithm that based on traditional Apriori algorithm. Considering time series analysis, the IoT data is coarse-grained, so it's hard to find frequent items in the data. Based on this, we divide data into different subsets based on different times and set an initial threshold. We propose an improved frequent items and association items mining algorithm-ADAA(advanced Apriori algorithm). © 2019 IEEE.

This paper presents a type of solar thermal power plant and also studies the efficiency of the common type of this distributed generation resource. In order to improve the efficiency of the power station, several techniques are studied such as the combined cycle plant, the thermoelectric generator and the intelligent control application. The thermodynamic analysis of the power plant and the performance of the equipment with an intelligent control system are validated by the developed experimental prototype. © 2019 IEEE.

In this paper, we give a tutorial on asymptotic properties of the Least Square (LS) and Regularized Least Squares (RLS) estimators for the finite impulse response model with filtered white noise inputs. We provide three perspectives: the almost sure convergence, the convergence in distribution and the boundedness in probability. On one hand, these properties deepen our understanding of the LS and RLS estimators. On the other hand, we can use them as tools to investigate asymptotic properties of other estimators, such as various hyper-parameter estimators. © 2021, CC BY.
