In this study, we present an effective hybrid algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO), called PSO-TLBO, to solve multi-objective optimization (MOO) problems. In PSO-TLBO, teacher phase and learner phase in TLBO are incorporated to a PSO to improve the exploration and exploitation ability. Another feature of PSO-TLBO is the improved circular crowed sorting (CCS) to truncate the external archive which stores the nondominated solutions found during the search. Moreover, the polynomial mutation is used only when the velocities of all solutions are very small. The performance of PSO-TLBO algorithm for MOO is tested on ZDT and DTLZ benchmarks functions and compared with some powerful MOO algorithms in terms of both convergence and spread performance. Also, the contribution of CCS is compared with crowded sorting in NSGA-II. Comparison results reveal the powerful ability of PSO-TLBO to obtain remarkable solutions in terms of inverted generational distance (IGD) metrics.

This work presents a failure recovery approach for foreseen failures of automated production systems to minimize the downtime of a system due to stoppages. In contrast to the common practice of implementing field control software, we suggest the use of operation states with pre- and postconditions. A set of operation states forms an operation state machine, whereby several operation state machines are used in a hierarchical manner in order to control and observe the process. The meta-model of the systems Modeling Language (SysML) is extended to combine operation state machines with OMAC State Machines. By dividing the failure detection from the process controller the necessary flexibility is given to adapt this approach to different packaging machines.

Currently there is no reliable mechanism available to allow continuous monitoring of all process conditions and leather characteristics inside the closed reactors during leather processing, so no real control. Conditions inside the reactors can only be monitored by stopping the reactor to sample the solution and leather. The automation systems for leather industry rely on stale centralised architecture, a critical point of failure imposing operational bottleneck. To improve the efficiency of leather manufacturing process the paper proposes a multi-agent system (MAS) architecture that is fault tolerant, and that provides high flexibility and agility needed by the turbulent environment of leather industry.

We consider a networked control system consisting of a physical plant, an actuator, a sensor, and a controller that is connected to the actuator and sensor via a communication network. The plant is described by a linear discrete-time system subject to additive disturbances. In order to reduce the required number of communications in the system, we propose a robust self-triggered model predictive controller based on rollout techniques that robustly asymptotically stabilizes a certain periodic sequence of sets in the state space while guaranteeing robust satisfaction of hard state and input constraints. At periodically occurring scheduling times, the self-triggered model predictive control algorithm determines the times at which the control input and plant measurement are updated in the time span until the next scheduling time. We establish a certain upper bound on the average sampling rate in the closed-loop system. Moreover, we show how increasing the asymptotic bound on the system state, which is a design parameter in the control scheme, can be used to further reduce the average number of communications in the system. © 2015, IF AC (International Federation of automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. This paper describes a fault detection and diagnosis method applied to a water distribution system. The main purpose, in this kind of systems with a very big amount of data, is to find a fault detection method which can achieve the best performance, while reducing computation and communication costs. The approach proposed here divides the installation sensors into several and possibly overlapping blocks, in each of which a local principal component analysis (PCA) is performed to detect and diagnose faults. After that, a central processor will receive the minimal possible information from all the nodes to take a global decision about fault detection and identification, i.e., the variable most responsible for the fault, for the whole plant. This distributed PCA method (DPCA) is compared with other distributed PCA methods, as well as a centralized PCA model, in order to get an idea of how good the proposed method is. Experimental results on the water network demonstrate that this DPCA method with local PCA models achieves good performance.

This paper introduces a solution for integrating environment systems on teaching platforms using two components: communication and primary control. The communication relies on a bus and specific protocol. The primary control algorithms were implemented in MATLAB-SIMULINK environment, while using Siemens S7-1200 PLC as acquisition server and some regular PC as a client, communicating to each other through the Mudbugs-TCP protocol. The teaching platform is represented by the double water tank system ASTANK2, after being equipped with sensors and actuators.

The use of parallel robots has been demonstrated to be an interesting alternative when high accuracy and/or high speed is required. However, in order to achieve these goals, model based controllers are required. This work presents a new model based control approach, the stable Extended CTC, that uses extra data from additional sensors introduced in the passive joints of parallel robot in the controller. The proposed controller guarantees asymptotic stability, which is an important contribution over the previously presented approaches. The use of redundant information increases controller robustness and performance, allowing to reduce tracking error with respect to traditional CTC approaches. The effectiveness of the proposed control law is demonstrated by implementing it in a Delta robot which has been modeled in ADAMS multibody software.

Grinding is a key process in high-added value sectors due to its capacity for producing high surface quality and high precision parts. One of the most important parameters that indicate the grinding quality is the surface roughness (Ra). Analytical models developed to predict surface finish are not easy to apply in the industry. Therefore, many researchers have made use of Artificial Neural Networks. However, all the approaches provide a particular solution for a wheel-workpiece pair. Besides, these solutions do not give surface roughness values related to the grinding wheel status. Therefore, in this work the prediction of the surface roughness (Ra) evolution based on Recurrent Neural Networks is presented with the capability to generalize to new grinding wheels and conditions. Results show excellent prediction of the surface finish evolution. The absolute maximum error is below 0. 49μm, being the average error around 0. 32μm. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Computing finite abstractions with robustness margins via local reachable set over-approximation

This paper proposes a method to compute finite abstractions that can be used for synthesizing robust hybrid control strategies for nonlinear systems. Most existing methods for computing finite abstractions utilize some global, analytical function to provide bounds on the reachable sets of nonlinear systems, which can be conservative and lead to spurious transitions in the abstract systems. This problem is even more pronounced in the presence of imperfect measurements and modelling uncertainties, where control synthesis can easily become infeasible due to added spurious transitions. To mitigate this problem, we propose to compute finite abstractions with robustness margins by over-approximating the local reachable sets of nonlinear systems. We do so by linearizing the nonlinear dynamics into linear affine systems and keeping track of the linearization error. It is shown that this approach provides tighter approximations and several numerical examples are used to illustrate of effectiveness of the proposed methods. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. In this paper we propose an estimator of solar radiation and a heuristic radiation selector to design a solar radiation Fault Tolerant Model Predictive control strategy for solar trough plants. The complete design of the control system proposed has been simulated using the model of ACUREX solar trough plant at the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA) using a Gain Scheduling Generalized Predictive control(GS-GPC) control strategy. Simulation results (estimation/heuristic selector/GS-GPC) of the proposed scheme are compared with simulations of the same GS-GPC controller strategy when using only a pyrheliometer radiation measurement.
