This paper presents finite state control (FSC) of paraplegic walking with wheel walker using functional electrical stimulation (FES) with spring brake orthosis (SBO). The work is a first effort towards restoring natural like swing phase in paraplegic gait through a new hybrid orthosis, referred to as spring brake orthosis (SBO). This mechanism simplifies the control task and results in smooth motion and more-natural like trajectory produced by the flexion reflex for gait in spinal cord injured subjects. The study is carried out with a model of humanoid with wheel walker using the Visual Nastran (Vn4D) dynamic simulation software. Stimulated muscle model of quadriceps is developed for knee extension. Fuzzy logic control (FLC) is developed in Matlab/Simulink to regulate the muscle stimulation pulse-width required to drive FES-assisted walking gait and the computed motion is visualised in graphic animation from Vn4D and finite state control is used to control the transaction between all walking states. Finite state control (FSC) is used to control the switching of brakes, FES and spring during walking cycle. © 2011 IEEE.

This communication describes the interoperability platform that has been developed at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) to integrate the access to different virtual and remote laboratories. Up to eleven laboratories that belong to the GilabViR group of interest in virtual and remote laboratories in our University have been analyzed to generate a set of specifications and develop the architecture and the applications that would allow its access through the university LMS system. Although the current LMS platform (Atenea) is implemented over Moodle 1.9, the new modules have been developed using Moodle 2.2.1 given that the migration to this version will be done in the next months. The interoperability platform defines new Moodle modules that allow the interconnection between the LMS system and a set of laboratories and provide the intrinsic LMS features (user identification, activity recording, educational materials repository, ...). There are modules that allow the interaction with a web service interface giving access to the laboratory, with Java applet virtual laboratories and others that make possible the link with LabView based remote laboratories, all of them with recording of experiment parameters in SQL databases placed in the experiment servers. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper focuses on the development of a tool to design nonlinear controllers automatically. This is done by means of an automatic stochastic search: a coevolutive algorithm, inspired by the competitive and symbiotic relationships between certain species in the Nature that evolve in parallel. The algorithm developed is used to look for a law that enable control of a classic system: the inverted pendulum. One of the two species that coevolve is made up of a set of control laws (each of them is a solution). The other one consist of initial conditions (that is a population of problems). The search space of the problem comprises all the possible solutions to it. The populations of the two species that evolve are processed by two different kinds of evolutive algorithms, a genetic algorithm and an algorithm that implements the Genetic Programming paradigm.

The use of electrical signals to restore the function of paralyzed muscles is called functional electrical stimulation (FES). FES is a promising method to restore mobility to individuals paralyzed due to spinal cord injury. FES induced movement control is a significantly challenging area, mainly emanating from various characteristics of the underlying physiological/biomechanical system. An approach of fuzzy trajectory tracking control of swinging motion optimized with genetic algorithm is presented. The results show the effectiveness of the approach in controlling FES-induced swinging motion. In this approach only the quadriceps muscle is stimulated to perform the swinging motion by controlling the amount of stimulation pulsewidth © 2011 IEEE.

The paper will present the implementation of numeric systems for process control and it will explain the problems that arise from the independent way of development of the actual control tasks - oriented to control theory away from the real time system- oriented to operating system theory. It will then be described the effects o running such control on an on-the-shelf resources deprived hardware environment, and the way these can be surpassed using co-designed control theory.

FES induced movement control is a significantly challenging area due to complexity and non-linearity of musculo-skeletal system. The goal of this study is to design a cycle-to-cycle control of FES-induced swinging motion. In this approach only the quadriceps muscle is stimulated by controlling the amount of stimulation pulsewidth. This time dependent behaviour is successfully compensated for using a cycle-to cycle fuzzy controller, which computes the amount of knee extension stimulation on the basis of the achieved flexion angle in previous cycles. The capability of fuzzy control in automatic generation of stimulation burst duration is assessed in computer simulations using a musculo-skeletal model. This paper presents the development of a fuzzy logic control scheme based on discrete-time cycle to cycle control strategies without predefined trajectory. The results show the effectiveness of the approach in controlling FES-induced swinging motion. © 2011 IEEE.

Common to most industries, the metal industry is having to 'rethink' its short and long term strategies when it comes to producing metals to customers' specifications. Indeed, metal producers are having to balance the requirements for more consistent and higher quality rolled products with those that are associated with greater efficiencies in energy costs and impact on environment. In the light of these considerations, the performance of key industrial systems such as hot-rolling mills must be carefully analysed in search of further improvements. Criteria for optimising hot-rolling of steel include system efficacy, advanced control strategies, optimal rolling schedule and product quality. This paper is the result of the authors' extensive study on the use of advanced technologies and new integrated approaches in the field of optimal scheduling for the hot-rolling process. The proposed design is based on 1. a multiobjective optimisation-based Population Adaptive Immune Algorithm (PAIA);2. physically-based models and Symbiotic data-driven modelling for the accurate prediction of mechanical properties of alloy steels;3. advanced control, including Adaptive Fuzzy Generalised Predictive control (AFGPC) to guarantee the optimal performance of the mill during the rolling process. Hence, the overarching aim of this research work is to integrate knowledge about both the stock and the rolling process to identify the optimal hot-deformation profiles in order to compute the most suitable rolling schedule and systematically 'chart' the optimal routes for processing and hence achieve 'right-first-time' production of these alloy steel via the desired final microstructure and mechanical properties. © 2011 IFAC.

This paper presents a monitoring and fault detection system based on principal component analysis techniques (PCA) for a simulated reverse osmosis desalination plant. The classical fault detection techniques based on PCA are not suitable for the type of plants studied in this work due to the cleaning cycles necessary for correct plan running. These cleaning cycles periodically change the operating mode of the plant and these changes could be detected as faults. So a well-known PCA approach designed for monitoring batch processes (U-PCA) has been adapted and applied in order to monitor this type of processes. The developed technique has been tested with several types of faults, obtaining good results. The ratio of false alarms has also been reduced in the nominal behaviour.

In this paper, the authors studied the implementation issues of an explicit model predictive controller on a programmable electronic device. For the implementation of this controller is considered the programmable controller architecture, hardware and software level, so the performance is optimized ensuring the feasibility of functioning. The main outcome is a series of recommendations to help implement the explicit MPC, which are applied to design the MPC of a DC-DC converter. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper proposes a model to quantify the reliability of web services. Based on their structures, web services can be classified into the following two kinds: atomic web service which calls no other web services and composite web service consisting of atomic web services. The model first evaluates the reliability of atomic web services from the consumers' perspective. After that this paper points out redundancy is a very effective approach to improve the reliability of composite web services. Then the reliability issue of composite web services is discussed. A method of computing the aggregating reliability of composite web services is introduced using the structure information with the assumption that the reliabilities of atomic web services in the composite web services are available.
