The performance of Interline DC Power Flow controllers (IDC-PFCs) in Voltage Source Converters (VSC)-based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids, can be affected due to different issues. The current limitation of HVDC lines, the voltage limitation of HVDC buses, and DC voltage of the IDC-PFC intermediary capacitor prevent effective and efficient operation of IDC-PFCs. In this paper, it is shown that this issue can be overcome by using a virtual capacitor in parallel with the IDC-PFC intermediary capacitor. Also, an energy control-based scheme is proposed for the operation of IDC-PFCs in VSC-HVDC grid. The benefits of using the virtual capacitor are: widening the operational area of the IDC-PFCs for the determined duty cycle and injecting more voltage in series to the interconnected HVDC line to control the related HVDC line current. The proposed solution is successfully evaluated on a CIGRE three-terminal VSC-HVDC grid which is modeled by linearized space-state equations.

The paper presents an analysis of the realization of digital signal processing algorithms with the use of STM32F4 microcontrollers. Various programming techniques have been demonstrated focusing on the implementation of FIR filters and FFT calculations based on Cortex Microcontroller Software Interface Standard. During the tests we use STM32F407 Discovery module with WM5102 Wolfson Audio Card. The speed of algorithms and the accuracy of calculations were checked. The quality of digital filters were tested using LMS adaptive filter or Analog Discovery 2 device. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Photodegradation of psychotropic medications: Impact on efficacy, safety, and drug properties

Antipsychotics and antidepressants are essential psychotropic medications used for treating various mental health conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. However, when exposed to light, these compounds are susceptible to photodegradation, potentially changing their biological activity and safety profiles. This study evaluates the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of several photoproducts derived from 13 psychotropic drugs. We used computational methods to predict the biological activity, toxicity, and drug-like properties of the photoproducts. Our results indicate that photoproducts such as amisulpride_TP166, TP246, quetiapine_D4, and quetiapine_PH1 show enhanced biological affinity and ADME-Tox profiles similar to their parent compounds, suggesting possible therapeutic advantages in their interaction with targeted receptors. However, some of the photocompounds exhibit lower predicted binding affinities when interacting with those receptors compared to their parent compounds, indicating a possible loss of function. These findings emphasize the need for further investigation into the effects and safety of drug photoproducts, particularly in the context of long-term pharmacotherapy. © 2025 The Author(s)

Identifying different vehicle types can help manage traffic more efficiently, reduce congestion, and improve public safety. This study aims to create a classification model that can recognize vehicle types based on the sound of passing vehicles. To achieve this, a database of raw audio files containing 1763 samples from two sources was assembled. The time-domain signals were converted to a time-frequency representation using the short-time Fourier transform to generate Mel Spectrograms. Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) were also generated using the discrete cosine transform. In our experiments we compared these approaches. Since the data was imbalanced we applied online augmentation. Based on the literature review, we chose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier because it is particularly well suited for analyzing large datasets due to its automatic feature extraction, parameter sharing and sparsity. The results showed that Mel Spectrograms were more effective for audio data preprocessing in this particular use case, achieving the highest accuracy of 0.875 and the highest f1-score of 0.877 compared to MFCCs. © 2025 IEEE Computer Society. As a beneficial way of increasing traffic capacity, autonomous vehicle platoons have paid extensive attention recently. This study proposes a Distributed Model Predictive control (DMPC) algorithm with input constraints. This algorithm is a suitable application for Cooperative Adaptive Cruise control (CACC) in the vehicle platoon. The platoon's leading vehicle is to track an imposed velocity reference, the rest of the platoon is to track the velocity of the preceding while maintaining an imposed desired reference between any consecutive vehicles, which is proportional to its velocity. A varied communication range in the predecessor following (PF) topology is used for a platoon. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified with some illustrative results. © 2021 IEEE.

Background and objective: Risk prediction models aim at identifyingpeople at higher risk of developing a target disease. Feature selection is particularly important to improve the prediction model performance avoiding overfitting and to identify the leading cancer risk (and protective) factors. Assessing the stability of feature selection/ranking algorithms becomes an important issue when the aim is to analyze the features with more prediction power. Methods: This work is focused on colorectal cancer, assessing several feature ranking algorithms in terms of performance for a set of risk prediction models (Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines (SVM), Logistic Regression, k-Nearest Neighbors and Boosted Trees). Additionally, their robustness is evaluated following a conventional approach with scalar stability metrics and a visual approach proposed in this work to study both similarity among feature ranking techniques as well as their individual stability. A comparative analysis is carried out between the most relevant features found out in this study and features provided by the experts according to the state-of-the-art knowledge. Results: The two best performance results in terms of Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) are achieved with a SVM classifier using the top-41 features selected by the SVM wrapper approach (AUC=0.693) and Logistic Regression with the top-40 features selected by the Pearson (AUC=0.689). Experiments showed that performing feature selection contributes to classification performance with a 3.9% and 1.9% improvement in AUC for the SVM and Logistic Regression classifier, respectively, with respect to the results using the full feature set. The visual approach proposed in this work allows to see that the Neural Network-based wrapper ranking is the most unstable while the Random Forest is the most stable. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that stability and model performance should be studied jointly as Random Forest turned out to be the most stable

In this paper, we address the core challenges of self-stabilization, obstacle detection, and collision avoidance arising when developing autonomous electric scooters for sharing systems. In particular, we firstly demonstrate how an e-scooter can balance itself by the usage of a reaction wheel combined with a braking mechanism. Secondly, we show how a depth-camera can be utilized to generate a grid map representation of the environment surrounding the e-scooter and how this can be used to design a computationally tractable algorithm which ensures obstacle avoidance as well as path following. Finally, the goal of this paper is to provide a starting point for the development of autonomous e-scooters for sharing systems by combining approaches from various research communities in a common application framework.

Based on today’s modern technologies, patient care can be provided remotely, in a connected way, being, at the same time, personalized, patient-centered and proactive. Such an approach can be achieved using Remote Health Monitoring systems (RHMS). In case of elderly people, dramatic permanent deteriorations of their health status can be caused by falls. The seniors’ health and life style monitoring and the detection and/or prevention of falls can be done by such RHMS, an example being the RO-SmartAgeing system developed inside “Non-invasive Monitoring System and Health Assessment of the Elderly in a Smart Environment (RO-SmartAgeing)” research project. The paper presents the problem of using microservices for optimizing the architecture and functionalities of RO-SmartAgeing system, and the way in which the problems of ensuring the security of patient data can be solved.
