The Technical Committees for control Education of IFAC and IEEE have started a collaborative initiative to collect, curate, and disseminate high quality freely available resources that support instruction of the first control course for undergraduate students in engineering and applied sciences programs. An initial survey with limited distribution provided 64 resources that cover all topics in a typical introductory control curriculum. This paper gives an initial glimpse of the resources collected thus far. It also suggests possible ways for categorization and dissemination.

The use of Agriculture Intelligent systems (AISs) in Iraq has become popular among farmers. The greenhouse is a solution for plant growth, which uses an effective microclimate to simulate seasons and to use alternative energy sources like solar, thermal, and photovoltaic systems for microclimate control. Greenhouses are considered a successful solution with developments and achievements in the technology of this field. However, problems like high costs, difficulties in installation and maintenance, or the need for some procedures should be considered. Because Iraq is close to the equator (3669 km), it receives sufficient solar power. It also has large areas available for the building of solar greenhouse systems. The farmers need an affordable and functional smart greenhouse to enable and encourage them to use the environment efficiently. We intend to develop low-cost, accurate, and easy-to-use greenhouse systems controlled by artificial intelligence algorithms. Farmers will be able to control the greenhouse by using simple commands. Machine learning algorithms provide real-time and effective analysis that could support farmers in decision-making and provide relevant data for researchers and policymakers. AISs algorithms can lead to a sustainable and productive agriculture system. The system can be used in Iraq with sufficient government support and subsidy.

The article presents the issue of scale deposits in sanitary installations. Scale contributes to improper operation of sanitary devices and leads to their degradation. Scale build-up in pipes and measuring elements results in higher water consumption due to inaccurate estimation of this resource consumption. The consequence is that devices based on process automation do not work properly due to disturbances in the actual water flow. The formation of deposits also leads to economic and ecological losses, as sanitary installations elements have to be replaced, which affects the increased use of raw materials and the generation of waste. This is not in line with current trends and global objectives related to circular economy. Scale also results in increased energy consumption and reduced energy efficiency. This is due to the resistance of the flows and the increased work of the pumps. Scale has insulating properties, which results in less efficient heat transfer. In this stady, a mathematical model was developed to detect the formation of scale deposits in sanitary installations. On this basis, it is possible to control the quality status of sanitary installation components. In this way, by taking appropriate action at an early stage of the formation of deposits, it can extend the life of the installation. Having information on scale deposits, it will help avoid wasting water and lead to more accurate measurement of water flows. This is important for the proper operation of devices such as heat pumps, where their operation is automated and requires precise measurements of the energy processes taking place. Scale is a significant problem for households, and also for factories or public institutions that are exposed to hard water environments. © 2021 International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference. In this paper, we discuss a distributed control architecture, aimed at networks with linear and time-invariant dynamics, which is amenable to convex formulations for controller design. The proposed approach is well suited for large scale systems, since the resulting feedback schemes completely avoid the exchange of internal states, i.e., plant or controller states, among sub-controllers. Additionally, we provide state-space formulas for these sub-controllers, able to be implemented in a distributed manner. © 2021, CC BY.

Much of the costs and dangers of exposure therapy in phobia treatment can be removed through virtual reality (VR). Exposing people to heights, for instance, might sound easy, but it still involves time and money investments to reach a tall building, mountain or bridge. People suffering from milder forms of acrophobia might not even be treated at all, the cost not being worth it. This paper presents a prototype that allows exposure therapy to be done in a controlled environment, in a more comfortable, quick and cheaper way. By applying acrophobia questionnaires, collecting biophysical data and developing a virtual reality game, we can expose volunteers to heights and analyze if there is any change in their fear and anxiety levels. This way, regardless of the initial anxiety level and phobia severity, we can check if there is any post-therapy improvement and verify if virtual reality is a viable alternative to real-world exposure.

FPGA is a hardware architecture based on a matrix of programmable and configurable logic circuits thanks to which a large number of functionalities inside the device can be modified using a hardware description language. These functionalities must often be secured especially when the context is sensitive (military, banking, medical, legal, etc.). In this paper, we put forward an efficient implementation of SIMON’s block cipher algorithm using Xilinx Vivado 2018.2. The proposed design is analyzed through simulation on Xilinx Artix-7. A prototype of our design is implemented using the xc7a35tcsg324-1 FPGA chip. Performance and results are discussed. © 2023, CC BY.

A novel model for identifying the traffic condition of urban arterial roadways is proposed in this paper to improve the operational efficiency and safety of the urban traffic arterial road system. During the identification process, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy integrated evaluation are employed to identify the traffic condition on the arterial road;according to the fuzzy logic scheme, a proper coordination strategy is then generated based on the resulting identification of each way of the artery. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a numerical experiment is carried out by using the microscopic traffic simulation software VISSIM, where a traffic flow simulation system is generated according to the real-time traffic data. The comparison results show that the proposed model works well to fit with the actual operating condition of the arterial traffic and the proposed coordination strategy can provide a better performance for the traffic management. In the current context of Big Data, a multitude of new NoSQL solutions for storing, managing, and extracting information and patterns from semi-structured data have been proposed and implemented. These solutions were developed to relieve the issue of rigid data structures present in relational databases, by introducing semi-structured and flexible schema design. As current data generated by different sources and devices, especially from IoT sensors and actuators, use either XML or JSON format, depending on the application, database technologies that store and query semi-structured data in XML format are needed. Thus, Native XML Databases, which were initially designed to manipulate XML data using standardized querying languages, i.e., XQuery and XPath, were rebranded as NoSQL Document-Oriented Databases systems. Currently, the majority of these solutions have been replaced with the more modern JSON based Database Management systems. However, we believe that XML-based solutions can still deliver performance in executing complex queries on heterogeneous collections. Unfortunately nowadays, research lacks a clear comparison of the scalability and performance for database technologies that store and query documents in XML versus the more modern JSON format. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, there are no Big Data-compliant benchmarks for such database technologies. In this paper, we present a comparison for selected Document-Oriented Database systems that either use the XML format to encode documents, i.e., BaseX, eXist-db, and Sedna, or the JSON format, i.e., MongoDB, CouchDB, and Couchbase. To underline the performance differences we also propose a benchmark that uses a heterogeneous complex schema on a large DBLP corpus. © 2021, CC BY.

Generally, crowd datasets can be collected or generated from real or synthetic sources. Real data is generated by using infrastructure-based sensors (such as static cameras or other sensors). The use of simulation tools can significantly reduce the time required to generate scenario-specific crowd datasets, facilitate data-driven research, and next build functional machine learning models. The main goal of this work was to develop an extension of crowd simulation (named CrowdSim2) and prove its usability in the application of people-tracking algorithms. The simulator is developed using the very popular Unity 3D engine with particular emphasis on the aspects of realism in the environment, weather conditions, traffic, and the movement and models of individual agents. Finally, three methods of tracking were used to validate generated dataset: IOU-Tracker, Deep-Sort, and Deep-TAMA. © 2023, CC BY.
