In this paper, a new coordinated control model is proposed based on the vehicular operational features, and a multi-objective optimization algorithm NSGA-II is employed to the model for the operation of the vehicle traveling on an urban arterial road taking three evaluation indexes into consideration as the average vehicle delay, the queue length, and the vehicle exhaust emission. A numerical experiment was made in an urban arterial road with three intersections on VISSIM for the proposed strategy, and the simulation results were compared with two commonly used pre-timed methods: Webster’s method and MAXBAND coordinated control method to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in dealing with the unbalanced traffic volume condition, and it proved its advantages in designing and managing traffic systems more efficiently. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

The increasing uptake of inverter based resources (IBRs) has resulted in many new challenges for power system operators around the world. The high level of complexity of IBR generators makes accurate classical model-based stability analysis a difficult task. This paper proposes a novel methodology for solving the problem of estimating the Region of Attraction (ROA) of a nonlinear system by combining classical model based methods with modern data driven methods. Our method yields certifiable inner approximations of the ROA, typical to that of model based methods, but also harnesses trajectory data to yield an improved accurate ROA estimation. The method is carried out by using analytical Lyapunov functions, such as energy functions, in combination with data that is used to fit a converse Lyapunov function. Our methodology is independent of the function fitting method used. In this work, for implementation purposes, we use Bernstein polynomials to function fit. Several numerical examples of ROA estimation are provided, including the Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system, a three machine system and the Van-der-Pol system. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Agent-based computing is an active field of research with the goal of building autonomous software of hardware entities. This task is often facilitated by the use of dedicated, specialized frameworks. For almost thirty years, many such agent platforms have been developed. Meanwhile, some of them have been abandoned, others continue their development and new platforms are released. This paper presents a up-to-date review of the existing agent platforms and also a historical perspective of this domain. It aims to serve as a reference point for people interested in developing agent systems. This work details the main characteristics of the included agent platforms, together with links to specific projects where they have been used. It distinguishes between the active platforms and those no longer under development or with unclear status. Biological experiments which aim to study changes in the gene expression profile currently allow to detect only significant variations in RNA levels due to high variance of the signal in both biological and technical replicates. The variance of the signal has its source in the experimental procedure and in the laboratory in which the measurement was performed. Understanding factors that influence measured levels of gene expression, using individual platforms, will allow the development of bioinformatics tools correcting the impact of experimental methodology. In this study, we analyze the influence of selected factors (poly(A) and spacer-T motifs; GC content, transcript length) on the precision of gene expression measurements by RT-qPCR, oligonucleotide microarrays and RNA sequencing.

The paper is exploring the possibility of using the non-linearity of elementary function compositions, combined with principles from number theory and combinatorics, in designing new cryptographic methods, and particularly in designing synchronous stream ciphering methods. The strength of such methods is based on the difficulty to solve with high accuracy large systems of nonlinear equations. The implementation details of an example of such stream ciphering method are presented. The security analysis and the statistical tests run on the implemented method show that the proposed approach is promising. © 2019, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

Background and Objective: Videodermoscopy is the gold standard in melanoma diagnosis. A new research trend aims to support specialists’ work by automating this examination method, but most research focuses on developing detectors to replace dermatologists. Our study aims to present a novel idea which focuses on supporting the examination process instead of completely automating it. Instead of detecting and classifying all naevi each time, our approach focuses on full screening at the first visit and shortening the examination at subsequent visits. During the following examinations, images of all naevi are taken by supporting staff and are compared with previously taken images using feature-matching or co-registration-based algorithms. An unmatched naevus needs to be checked by the specialist, meaning that a new naevus appeared or an old one had changed. Methods: The similarity between images (ranging from 0% to 100%) was obtained with characteristic points searching (ORB method) and co-registration-based methods. No dataset presenting changes of naevi over time exists, so augmenting the images from PH2 and HAM10000 datasets was required to simulate the time flow. Results: The decision bound was set, so the true positive rate of each method was equal to 99%, giving the specificity of ORB equal to 97% (PH2) and 89% (HAM10000). Similar tests were performed using a co-registration algorithm giving specificity equal to 23% (PH2) and 19% (HAM10000). Conclusions: We believe that employing our approach will allow supporting staff to perform screening without experts’ help, decreasing examination time and costs and increasing the accessibility of dermoscopic examinations.

The continuous integration of renewable energy sources into power networks is causing a paradigm shift in energy generation and distribution with regards to trading and control;the intermittent nature of renewable sources affects pricing of energy sold or purchased;the networks are subject to operational constraints, voltage limits at each node, rated capacities for the power electronic devices, current bounds for distribution lines. These economic and technical constraints coupled with intermittent renewable injection may pose a threat to system stability and performance. We propose a novel holistic approach to energy trading composed of a distributed predictive control framework to handle physical interactions, i.e., voltage constraints and power dispatch, together with a negotiation framework to determine pricing policies for energy transactions. We study the effect of forecasting generation and consumption on the overall network’s performance and market behaviours. We provide a rigorous convergence analysis for both the negotiation framework and the distributed control. Lastly, we assess the impact of forecasting in the proposed system with the aid of testing scenarios. © 2021, CC BY-SA.

Purpose: Recent developments in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) have led to significant advances in healthcare technologies enhancing robot-Assisted minimally invasive surgery (RAMIS) in some surgical specialties. However, current human-robot interfaces lack intuitive teleoperation and cannot mimic surgeon's hand/finger sensing required for fine motion micro-surgeries. These limitations make teleoperated robotic surgery not less suitable for, e.g. cardiac surgery and it can be difficult to learn for established surgeons. We report a pilot study showing an intuitive way of recording and mapping surgeon's gross hand motion and the fine synergic motion during cardiac micro-surgery as a way to enhance future intuitive teleoperation. Methods: We set to develop a prototype system able to train a Deep Neural Network (DNN) by mapping wrist, hand and surgical tool real-Time data acquisition (RTDA) inputs during mock-up heart micro-surgery procedures. The trained network was used to estimate the tools poses from refined hand joint angles. Outputs of the network were surgical tool orientation and jaw angle acquired by an optical motion capture system. Results: Based on surgeon's feedback during mock micro-surgery, the developed wearable system with light-weight sensors for motion tracking did not interfere with the surgery and instrument handling. The wearable motion tracking system used 12 finger/thumb/wrist joint angle sensors to generate meaningful datasets representing inputs of the DNN network with new hand joint angles added as necessary based on comparing the estimated tool poses against measured tool pose. The DNN architecture was optimized for the highest estimation accuracy and the ability to determine the tool pose with the least mean squared error. Design of neural nonlinear PFC controller to control speed of autonomous car

In this research, we are going to design a neural nonlinear predictive functional controller (PFC) to achieve a reduced fuel consumption for a chosen autonomous car walks according to a supplied speed trajectory on known roads. We used a fitting neural network as a simple tool for modelling the car's engine and control laws needed to calculate the suitable control commands passed to the brakes and gas pedals' actuators. Independent model method and constraints handling are used to provide controller robustness. We used MATLAB Simulink and IPG CarMaker to design and test our PFC controller.
