Background: systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. Results: This glossary aims at being a first aid kit for the systems Medicine researcher facing an unfamiliar term, where he/she can get a first understanding of them, and, more importantly, examples and references for digging into the topic. © Massimiliano Zanin et al., 2021;Published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. 2021.

Recursive Subspace-based Predictive control and Its Application to Fault-tolerant control

This paper investigates the data-driven realization of predictive controllers, and its application to fault-tolerant control. With the aid of subspace identification method, the subspace predictor is first derived in the closed-loop setup. To cope with the change in the process, a recursive algorithm is adopted to recursive update the subspace matrices. The data-driven predictive controller is designed by seeking the solution of the quadratic programming problem, without the information of the predesigned controller. Then, it is applied to fault-tolerant control by implementing the recursive subspace predictor. In the end, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by a case study on the three-tank system. © 2018

Fast increase of Earth population during the last decades raised a serious problem when it came to providing fresh and good quality food (mainly vegetables) in big quantity over a short period of time. Due to relatively long lifecycles of plants when growing in gardens or fields, the best solution consisted in using greenhouses. Greenhouses proved to be a very important solution since they are capable of operating regardless of local environments if minimum requirements (heating and water) are provided. By offering optimum growing conditions for the plants, the greenhouse environments not only stimulate a shorter lifecycle but also offer almost perfect protection against pests or plants diseases. An even better solution is represented by hydroponic greenhouses which exhibit several advantages over traditional greenhouses: they do not need earth for growing plants, the size and location are less restrictive, the plant cultures can be overlapped and the nutrients and other parameters can be controlled and personalized more efficiently. However, this comes with a higher cost for implementing and using automatic control architecture. In addition to specialized sensors, efficient solutions for data transmission, control and command must be used. In this paper a hydroponic system is presented. It aims to control not only a greenhouse but a set of greenhouses by aggregating them into a complex grid alike mechanism of monitoring and control. Intermediate results prove the solution is functional but the final architecture is not yet finalized. © SGEM2017.

In this paper, we propose distributed algorithms that solve a system of Boolean equations over a network, where each node in the network possesses only one Boolean equation from the system. The Boolean equation assigned at any particular node is a private equation known to this node only, and the nodes aim to compute the exact set of solutions to the system without exchanging their local equations. We show that each private Boolean equation can be locally lifted to a linear algebraic equation under a basis of Boolean vectors, leading to a network linear equation that is distributedly solvable using existing distributed linear equation algorithms as a subroutine. A number of exact or approximate solutions to the induced linear equation are then computed at each node from different initial values. The solutions to the original Boolean equations are eventually computed locally via a Boolean vector search algorithm. We prove that given solvable Boolean equations, when the initial values of the nodes for the distributed linear equation solving step are i.i.d selected according to a uniform distribution in a high-dimensional cube, our algorithms return the exact solution set of the Boolean equations at each node with high probability. Furthermore, we present an algorithm for distributed verification of the satisfiability of Boolean equations, and prove its correctness. Finally, we show that by utilizing linear equation solvers with differential privacy to replace the in-network computing routines, the overall distributed Boolean equation algorithms can be made differentially private. Under the standard Laplace mechanism, we prove an explicit level of noises that can be injected in the linear equation steps for ensuring a prescribed level of differential privacy. The problem of the rapid creation of effective web applications of one class using formal means is considered. A conceptual approach to its solution is offered based on an analysis of the peculiarities of the construction of web applications. Our approach is based on defining the standard web application architecture and selecting its components using formal methods in accordance with user requirements. A formal logical system is proposed that uses the design of web applications as a process of outputting a formula specified according to the needs of the user, which defines the schemes of execution of the modules of the system. An important feature of this approach is the ability to visualise the process of designing the system in 3D, which creates the conditions for effective interaction between developers and machine development tools.

In this paper we propose a pipeline for brain mapping using a decentralized database with a blockchain architecture. We use a two-layer model for a distributed imaging data ledger capable of version control and authoring augmented data. Our platform is capable of direct volume rendering inside a browser window using WebGL. The data visualization pipeline allows for real-time multi-intensity transfer functions and global opacity of a given imaging recording. The platform is intended as a collaboration tool for multiple imaging laboratories and institutes and aims to help in organizing augmented data and multiple level-of-detail recordings used on a wide array of devices. We believe our platform will aid in brain mapping efforts for classification, measurement and visualization of cortical structures trough the aid of virtual reality and a scalable backend based on a standard blockchain technology.

In this paper, we introduce a notion of so-called finite-step simulation functions for discrete-time control systems. In contrast to the existing notions of simulation functions, a finite-step simulation function does not need decay at each time step but after some finite numbers of steps. We show that the existence of such a function guarantees that the mismatch between output trajectories of the concrete and abstract systems lies within an appropriate bound. Using this relaxation, we develop a new type of small-gain conditions which are less conservative than those previously used for compositional construction of approximate abstractions of interconnected control systems. In particular, using finite-step simulation functions, it is possible to construct approximate abstractions, where stabilizability of each subsystem is not necessarily required. The effectiveness of our results is verified by an illustrative example.

The development of the Production Unit Performance Management Tool (PUPMT), a monitoring and diagnostic tool to select basic signals that have a significant impact on output KPIs, is based on a hierarchical analysis of key performance indicators presented in the ISO 22400 standard. The growing number of quantified signals, such as ambient temperature or even the frequency of vibrations makes decision support tools more intelligent. Moreover, they also include predictive analysis in addition to online presentation of the current state of resources. PUPMT tool allows identifying key events that have a significant impact on current or future benefit in production output. It also allows what-if type analysis, running the simulation of the impact of the proposed changes, and the results of this simulation depend on the effects of similar changes that occurred in the past in a given smart manufacturing environment. Thanks to the automatic identification of potential dependencies, the proposed solution adapts to the specifics of a given environment or even a selected production unit. The paper describes the most important methods featured in the tool. Specifically, it considers a signal classification method, a signal correlation analysis and selection of key factors affecting the efficiency of the production process. In order to verify the methods various tests were carried out to calculate and control of OEE index on 20 production units. Finally, we conclude current results and future research directions.

Through their lifetime sunspots undergo a change in their area and shape and, as they decay, they fragment into smaller structures. Here, for the first time we analyze the spatial structure of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) slow body and fast surface modes in observed umbrae as their cross-sectional shape changes. The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) techniques were used to analyze 3 and 6 hours SDO/HMI time series of Doppler velocities at the photospheric level of approximately circular and elliptically shaped sunspots. Each time series were divided equally into time intervals, to evidence the change of the sunspots’ shape. To identify physical wave modes, the POD/DMD modes were cross-correlated with a slow body mode model using the exact shape of the umbra, whereas the shape obtained by applying a threshold level of the mean intensity for every time interval. Our results show that the spatial structure of MHD modes are affected, even by apparently small changes of the umbral shape, especially in the case of the higher-order modes. For the datasets used in our study, the optimal time intervals to consider the influence of the change in the shape on the observed MHD modes is 37 - 60 minutes. The choice of these intervals is crucial to properly quantify the energy contribution of each wave mode to the power spectrum. © 2023, CC0.
