The main goal of the paper is to study the equilibria of a nonlinear system, proving the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium point in the positive ortant. We also provide numerically tractable conditions (by using Linear Matrix Inequalities techniques) to check the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point. An illustrative numerical example is closing the paper along with some conclusions. © 2018, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

In the laser - solid target experiments at ELI-NP, maximizing the availability of the laser system and hence the number of shots during a campaign is envisaged. One of the factors that affects this is the time for preparing the experiment and the time for changing the targets between shots. In this paper we present a method for automatic rough alignment of various experimental setup instruments like the target frames, microscopes and diagnostics. Giving the impossibility to define a global reference system that captures precisely enough the relative position of all equipment in a continuously changing experimental setup, the method developed is using relative optical measurements using fiducial markers. The method is conceived to be used along with other micron-level alignment methods as a pre-alignment phase. Along this work, a setup and the algorithms were developed in order to test the accuracy of the method. First tests revealed a rough alignment accuracy between 100-200μm which was achieved using only a low resolution imaging camera. The accuracy can be further improved using higher resolution imaging systems or by developing new key points in the algorithm that are discussed at the end of the paper. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. The effects of climate change and global warming reveal the need to find alternative sources of clean energy. In this sense, wave energy power plants, and in particular Oscillating Water Column(OWC) devices, offer a huge potential of energy harnessing. Nevertheless, the conversion systems have not reached a commercially mature stage yet so as to compete with conventional power plants. At this point, the use of new control methods over the existing technology arises as a doable way to improve the efficiency of the system. Due to the nonuniform response that the turbine shows to the rotational speed variation, the speed control of the turbo-generator may offer a feasible solution for efficiency improvement during the energy conversion. In this context, a novel speed control approach for OWC systems is presented in this paper, demonstrating its goodness and affording promising results when particularized to the Mutriku's wave power plant.

In the field of the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), the main objectives of a control strategy are to optimize the electrochemical reactions in the reaction subsystem in order to increase the fuel economy and energy efficiency, as well as ensure the load demand under a dynamic load profile and variable available power from renewable energy sources (RESs). Among others, the Global Extremum Seeking (GES) optimization technique has shown its capability to deal with these requirements. In this paper a classical implementation of a GES controller is analyzed and an artificial neural network (ANN) based implementation is obtained, showing that the approximation is accurate.

New delay-efficient configurable multiplier based on Modified Booth's Algorithm (MBA) and Wallace Tree (WT) structure for multiplying two m-bit operands - where m ranges from 8-bit to 128-bit - is introduced. WT structure has been used to reduce the number of sequential adding stages and speed improvements have been achieved. Modifying Booth's multiplier architecture at a fundamental level is an advantageous concept that sets FPGA based multiplier models apart from rigid-architecture conventional multipliers. In the context of this work, various multipliers, based on MBA and WT, have been developed with the smallest possible time delay. Comparisons have been made between the proposed multiplier implementations and those found in the literature. The comparative results show that the proposed multiplier introduces delay improvement reaches % 42.64. © 2017 IEEE.

In this paper we provide clear direct evidence of multiple concurrent higher order magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes in circular and elliptical sunspots by applying both Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) techniques on solar observational data. These techniques are well documented and validated in the areas of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and granular flows, yet are relatively new to the field of solar physics. While POD identifies modes based on orthogonality in space and it provides a clear ranking of modes in terms of their contribution to the variance of the signal, DMD resolves modes that are orthogonal in time. The clear presence of the fundamental slow sausage and kink body modes, as well as higher order slow sausage and kink body modes have been identified using POD and DMD analysis of the chromospheric Hα line at 6562.808 Å for both the circular and elliptical sunspots. Additionally, to the various slow body modes, evidence for the presence of the fast surface kink mode was found in the circular sunspot. All the MHD modes patterns were cross-correlated with their theoretically predicted counterparts and we demonstrated that ellipticity cannot be neglected when interpreting MHD wave modes. The higher-order MHD wave modes are even more sensitive to irregularities in umbral cross-sectional shapes, hence this must be taken into account for more accurate modelling of the modes in sunspots and pores. In steam/water loop for large scale ships, there are mainly five sub-loops posing different dynamics in the complete process. When optimization is involved, it is necessary to select different prediction horizons for each loop. In this work, the effect of prediction horizon for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system is studied. Firstly, Nonlinear Extended Prediction Self-Adaptive controller (NEPSAC) is designed for the steam/water loop system. Secondly, different prediction horizons are simulated within the NEPSAC algorithm. Based on simulation results, we conclude that specific tuning of prediction horizons based on loop’s dynamic outperforms the case when a trade-off is made and a single valued prediction horizon is used for all the loops.

The vast majority of the software developers use the agile framework for project management. Agile approach provides more flexibility and adaption to the changes against classic software development approach. The key methodology of agile approach represents the scrum. The core of scrum management forms sprint, which represents a time shift activity and envelops all other events of scrum. The outcome of the sprint should be the increment in development of the project, which is possible to submit to the customers or the users. The paper maps the possibilities of visualization of the course of individual sprints at everyday meetings of the research team (stand up meetings), which have a decisive influence on the quality of communication of the research team and the overall success of the project. © 2019 VSB-Technical University of Ostrava. Undergraduate students in many engineering programs around the world take only one control course. The IFAC Educational Committee has developed and piloted to a limited audience a comprehensive survey for the topics to be included in such course. This issue is relevant to both academia and industry. The paper discusses the initial findings related to the design of the survey as well as the responses of the participants. The findings will be used to refine the survey and distribute it in the near future to the global control community.
