sAnalyzing textual data is a very challenging task because of the huge volume of data generated daily. Fundamental issues in text analysis include the lack of structure in document datasets, the need for various preprocessing steps and performance and scaling issues. Existing text analysis architectures partly solve these issues, providing restrictive data schemas, addressing only one aspect of text preprocessing and focusing on one single task when dealing with performance optimization. Thus, we propose in this paper a new generic text analysis architecture, where document structure is flexible, many preprocessing techniques are integrated and textual datasets are indexed for efficient access. We implement our conceptual architecture using both a relational and a document-oriented database. Our experiments demonstrate the feasibility of our approach and the superiority of the document-oriented logical and physical implementation. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

The paper discusses the application of System on Chip devices for processing Megapixel video streams. The domain of image processing using high resolution images is very demanding in the scope of calculating power and frequently exploits special processing hardware. The progress of integration technology brings about SoC which are capable of meeting such processing demands. Characteristics of FPGA and DSP based systems are assessed. A concise survey of chip solutions is presented and a pair of representative systems is chosen for comparison of their properties. The design of a smoke detection system is used for evaluating the advantages and drawbacks of using such SoC solutions. Almost identical image processing algorithms are implemented in the case of FPGA and DSP. Both solutions meet the image processing requirements and are suitable for real time processing. FPGA based solution is much faster as it uses pipelining for improving the utilisation of scarce memory resources.

This paper discusses the issue of dependability of a measuring system from the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) point of view. During the tests, the equipment for conducting electromagnetic compatibility tests was used. The tests were carried out in accordance with the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and the harmonized standard IEC 61000-4-6. The measuring system equipped with non-classical piezoelectric transducers called MFC was considered. The MFC transducer was used as a sensor connected to the NI 9191 CompactDAQ Chassis. During the research, the influence of conducted disturbances on the transmission wire was examined. One of the elements of the test bench was an EM-clamp (providing both inductive and capacitive coupling) consisting of a tube of split ferrite rings of two different grades, which can be clamped over the cable under test in a non-invasive way.

The paper deals with two analysis methods which can provide enough information regarding functional steadiness of electric drives using AC motors: frequential analysis method (determine the content of harmonics of the electric specific curves), and fractal analysis method (determine the fractal dimension of specific curves of time variation). The paper shows the complementarity of the two methods and the validity of the new method suggested (fractal analysis/fractal dimension) through the non-contradictory nature concerning the influence of any disturbance on the driving system functional steadiness.

Energy efficiency in the buildings sector is one of the main research areas on which the European Union has focused its efforts. Reducing energy consumption has become a priority, as well as its estimation and prediction. There are a number of different models used to achieve the latter, from white-box models (fully informed) to black-box models (all necessary information is inferred from data), as well as hybrid approaches. However, these existing gray-box models rely on mathematical models which can easily be over-parameterized. We have implemented a gray-box model and propose an improved Sensitivity Analysis method which we have used to identify the correlated parameters. Moreover, upon analyzing the results of this analysis, we propose a simplification applied on the mathematical model, without actually modifying it.

In the laser - solid target experiments at ELI-NP, maximizing the availability of the laser system and hence the number of shots during a campaign is envisaged. One of the factors that affects this is the time for preparing the experiment and the time for changing the targets between shots. In this paper we present a method for automatic rough alignment of various experimental setup instruments like the target frames, microscopes and diagnostics. Giving the impossibility to define a global reference system that captures precisely enough the relative position of all equipment in a continuously changing experimental setup, the method developed is using relative optical measurements using fiducial markers. The method is conceived to be used along with other micron-level alignment methods as a pre-alignment phase. Along this work, a setup and the algorithms were developed in order to test the accuracy of the method. First tests revealed a rough alignment accuracy between 100-200μm which was achieved using only a low resolution imaging camera. The accuracy can be further improved using higher resolution imaging systems or by developing new key points in the algorithm that are discussed at the end of the paper.

An algorithm to find a collision free path, for an autonomous mobile robot, is proposed in this paper. The path between the starting point and the destination point, a priori established, is calculated for two methods: the local and the global path planner. The computation of this path, for both methods, is based on an evolutionary approach: Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO). This approach uses a new fitness function for both path planning methods. The result of this algorithm would be a path planning control of the mobile robot in an environment with both fixed and mobile obstacles. The computational efficiency of this online path planning algorithm using PSO with the proposed fitness function is proved in simulation and real time implementation. Real time experiments using a mobile robot validate the local path planning method of the proposed algorithm. The mobile robot used in real time experiments is equipped with a laser scanner module to communicate accurate information about the fixed and mobile surroundings to the robot.

The objective of this paper is to address a new method based on trend extraction for isolating faults in the nonstationary and nonlinear processes. Firstly, a concise review of the traditional methods for fault isolation based on Hotelling statistic are introduced, a rigorous analysis of their weaknesses, especially the smearing (coupling) phenomena, is provided, and the possible handling strategies are given. Secondly, a new contribution index for isolation is proposed based on the improved detection statistic, iT~2, and it's properties are analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the new contribution method is validated by a nonstationary and nonlinear numerical case. Also it is used for monitoring the satellite attitude control system. The results show that the new contribution method can cope with the smearing phenomena of the traditional contribution indexes.

This paper presents the new laboratory test rig of the vertical axis flexible shaft supported by two active magnetic bearings. Behind the motivation of establishing this setup is the control of vibration modes of the flexible rotor - shaft assembly, while the rotational speed varies and the unbalanced mass on the whirling disc is introduced to the system. The proposed model is aimed to simulate real operation conditions of the rotating machinery with an applied external load, with a variable structure caused by a change of material properties of the rotor - shaft assembly, or due to a fault of some elements coupled with the rotor.

Timelapse microscopy enables long term monitoring of biological processes, however a major bottleneck in assesing experimental outcome is the need for an automated analysis framework to extract statistics and evaluate results. In this study, we use Gabor energy texture descriptors to generate a high dimensional feature space which is analysed with principal component analysis to provide unsupervised characterisation of texture differences between pairs of images. We apply this technique to differentiation of human embryonic carcinoma cells in the presence of all-trans retinoic acid (RA) and show that differentiation outcome can be predicted directly from texture information. A microfluidic environment is used to deliver pulses of RA stimulation over five days in culture. Results provide insight into the dynamics of cell response to differentiation signals over time. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.
