In this paper we propose an effective method of aerial image classification, which combines three types of features: color-based, statistical and fractal information. Two distinct phases were necessary for the CBIR system, which includes the classification algorithm: the learning phase and the classification phase. In the learning phase 5 different and efficient features were selected: entropy, contrast, homogeneity, mass fractal dimension and lacunarity. Also, three categories (classes) in CBIR were considered. The method of comparison, based on sub-images, improves the texture-based classification. A set of 100 aerial images from UAV was tested for establishing the rate of classification. The rate of 96% accurate classification, obtained as result, confirms the efficiency of the proposed method.

We give explicit analytic formulas for computing the L2 norm of a discrete-time generalised system whose rational transfer matrix function may be improper or polynomial. The norm is expressed in terms of solutions of generalized Lyapunov equations, written down with coefficients from a special type of realisation of the underlying transfer function matrix, much in the same spirit of the standard (proper) case. The main result hints to a numerically-sound prototype algorithm that relies on standard reliable software for computing solutions of generalised Lyapunov equations. © 2014 IEEE.

We consider a formation control problem in which a collection of systems is ought to attain a balanced configuration on a submanifold of their state space. The submanifold thus determines the shape and position of the desired formation. We solve the formation control problem by simultaneously balancing the retractions of the systems onto the submanifold and asymptotically stabilizing the submanifold. In doing so, we arrive at a distributed control law.

Nowadays, time is a very valuable resource and can make the difference between life and death. Having knowledge about this fact we decided to deal with one of the most important aspects of contemporary medicine, EMS (emergency medical services) response time. Modern systems that encourage intelligent communication methods between medical devices and doctors are a must in ubiquitous health care environments. Auxilum Medicine fosters a triple-win situation regarding the relationship between medical institutions, doctors and patients. Emergency patients should be treated with utmost care because their life is hanging by a thread if nobody is present to take immediate action. We are presenting a platform which enables doctors to simultaneously monitor a large number of patients from different physical locations. By receiving real time notifications, medical history, prevention alarms directly to any network connected devices (mobile phones, tablets, desktops, notebooks, smart watches, etc.), the medical staff can act promptly, exactly when and where it is needed in order to save human lives. Our solution's architecture allows gathering data from any medical signal processing unit and sends it straight to the cloud using encrypted communication protocols. What makes Auxilum Medicine unique refers to the cloud integration with hospital departments' structure, awareness of different medical staff roles and capabilities, privacy data interest, updates sent to patient's relatives as well as a modern responsive adaptive user interface. As a part of our experiment, aimed for testing our platform's capabilities, we have built a biomedical wireless sensor wearable device that provides real-time parameters (temperature and heart rate). Such a system favors medical equipment real time monitoring by using cloud services and permanently keeps alive the link between doctors and their patients, drastically increasing the EMS response time.

The paper presents details on the development of an intelligent system for particulate matter (PM) air pollution monitoring, analysis and forecasting in two pilot cities, Ploiesti and Targoviste, in selected areas near schools, kindergartens and pediatric hospitals. The main purpose of the system is to provide expert early warnings to protect children with health problems. An in-situ PM10, PM2.5 monitoring network was designed and an online PM2.5 monitoring network is under development for each city. Two case studies of PM air pollution analysis and forecast for the Ploiesti city are described. The PM air pollution analysis, forecasting, and children health impact analysis were made by using techniques from statistics and artificial intelligence. © 2015 IEEE.

Genetic Algorithms are frequently used to estimate parameters in complex mathematical models. However, it is not always straightforward how the parameters of the genetic algorithm should be set in order to find optimal solutions more efficiently. In this paper we will discuss how the genetic operators, mutation and cross over, influence performance within a parameter estimation program which estimates energy consumption in a Passive House. We have varied them independently of one another and have gained insight on the ways they affect our program and how they should be set in order to maximize performance.

In this paper we study the problem of computing the (family of) reduced order model(s) that satisfy the following properties the systems match the moments of the given to be reduced system and the same property holds for the first order derivatives of the corresponding transfer functions. We prove that such a model exists and compute it. We also study the problem of moment matching for the state-space representations of the first order derivatives of rational transfer functions. Finally, we show that the model that matches the moment of both the given system and its first order derivative is a member of the family of reduced order models whose first order derivatives achieve moment matching.

This work is a aggregated perspective of previous papers studying advanced control strategy applicable in intermittently heated buildings. This strategy mainly aims to optimize the energy efficiency of heating systems taking into consideration the minimization of the needful time and the computational resources necessary to this process. Model Predictive control is the control strategy used in this work and the main purpose (ensuring maximum comfort with minimum energy consumption) is satisfied by using weather forecasts and building occupancy program. Several architectures presented can be used to implement the proposed solution. The main goal is to minimize the computational requirements achieving the best performance. To solve the problems from previous studies, this paper studied the solutions implemented on a single thermal zone and multiple thermal zones.

Project-based learning is widely used in various academic fields. Nevertheless, software engineering projects have a special statute due to their interdisciplinary features. Unlike other academic disciplines, software engineering requires knowledge from diverse engineering areas, but also from system modeling and design, business domain, communication. In order to maximize the learning benefits and to facilitate obtaining successful projects, the teacher has to be actively involved in all the phases of the project life cycle, including team formation. This article presents a new application which implements the collaborative learning paradigm through project-based learning in software engineering. The model automates the process of optimal grouping of students in teams based on a skill inventory created by the teacher. The collected answers related to students’ skills will help the teacher to built the most equilibrate groups in one's class. The grouping is made taking into account various criteria. Once groups are formed, students can collaborate by chatting in the project's forum or by attaching additional files to their project. Preliminary results are provided and discussed in the context of various groupware tools.

The following paper presents the construction of a prototype of the flexible textile resistive humidity sensor, which can be used in textronics clothing applications and can be easy integrated with the fabric. It can be used as a sensor applied to sheets in hospitals or nursing homes, or as a sensor in special medical clothing. The authors describe a method of manufacturing of the sensor via sputtering method (PVD) and present the mechanical and electrical parameters of the textile sensor under different environmental conditions obtained with using measurement and processing autonomic system. The resistance and capacitance of the sensor was examined in the wide range of humidity 20 to 90% at the temperature 30 °C and 40 °C. This paper describe also an apparatus for applying the electroconductive sliver layers on the surface. The authors also presented the right type of textile substrate on which is made the sensor. Microscopic examination of the upper layer of prototype was also presented in the paper. This novel method of creating the sensor for humidity measurement on the flexible textile substrate has not been reported before. Copyright © 2015 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
