By continuing to use fossil fuels we are bound to pollute the atmosphere, and consequently, unwanted greenhouse and climate change effects will come to dominate every part of the earth. Wind power energy represents an interesting alternative to traditional forms of obtaining energy. However, the efficiency of wind power strongly depends on the control methods that play a significant role in eliminating the perturbing factors, decreasing the structural loads and increasing the amount and quality of the energy that is produced. A design of a model based control algorithm for a horizontal wind turbine is proposed. In a model-based control approach, increased model accuracy implies reduced uncertainty. The paper will include an analysis of the advantages that may arise from using such a control technique and also will focus on the robustness of the closed loop system. © 2010 IFAC.

The control of plasma in nuclear fusion has been revealed as a promising application of control engineering, with increasing interest in the control community during last years. In this paper it is developed a control-oriented linear model for the control of plasma current. For this purpose, it is provided a summary of the background necessary to deal with control problems in tokamak-based nuclear fusion reactors as it is the case of the future ITER tokamak. Besides, it is also given a review of the most used simulators and plasma models, with the aim of providing an adequate background for control engineers to derive their own control-oriented model or to choose the appropriate existing one. Finally, the proposed plasma model performance is proven in a current drive profile trajectory tracking problem using a modified anti-windup PIDbased control scheme.

A dynamic reduced model of an industrial diesel hydrodesulfurization plant has been developed and validated against plant data. Its purpose is the prediction of the rate of hydrogen consumption, as well as some other critical variables, as a function of the hydrocarbon feed, so as to be integrated in a decision support system aimed at the operation optimization in real time of the refinery hydrogen network. A model which combines first physical-chemical principles with black box elements is proposed. Model structure and calibration procedure are described, and validation results are presented. © 2009 IFAC.

This work aims at the development of a versatile control strategy for operating unknown mechanically constrained devices such as drawers or doors. Few assumptions on the device's shape as well as the utilized hardware are required. Our approach is based on an on-line estimation of the constraint manifold which serves as a reference input for an admittance-type controller providing the compliance required. The direction estimation is obtained from the velocity signal in task space. An on-line adaptation of the admittance controller according to the estimated moving direction reduces contact forces. The functionality of the control strategy is demonstrated on a mobile manipulator in a kitchen environment.

Non-opioid intravenous anesthetic agents, such as propofol, have been used in anesthesia since 1970's for conscious sedation. In this paper, the study aims to regulate the syringe pump of propofol infusion during induction. The syringe pump is regulated by using a linear positive controller. The controller is designed so as to satisfy positivity in state. The control output is positive and bounded. Effect site concentration is used as a feedback to the controller. Simulation results show that the controller regulates propofol very well and the BIS responses of the patient are observed so that there is no overshoot or oscillation.

The IEC61499 is an open standard for distributed control and automation. The interface between control software and hardware or communications is achieved by means of the so-called Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB). This paper presents the guidelines to build communication SIFBs based on the emerging OMG DDS (Data Distribution Service) middleware. This specification implements in a very efficient way the Publisher/Subscriber paradigm providing significant QoS configuration possibilities. These characteristics make DDS suitable for implementing the communications among time-critical devices. By using these DDS-SIFBs within IEC61499 code generation tools, the designers of the distributed applications will be allowed to use this powerful technology in the new distributed applications.

This paper is concerned with the stability analysis and controller design for a class of MIMO networked control systems (NCSs) with network constraints. In view of MIMO NCSs where network is of limited access channels, a discrete-time switched delay model is formulated. By constructing a novel piecewise Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, a new stability criterion is developed in terms of linear matrix inequalities. On the basis of the obtained stability condition, a static output feedback controller is designed by applying an iterative algorithm. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2010 ICIC International.
