Nowadays the use of the IEC 61131-3 standard is well spread and the number of tool vendors that announce to be IEC 61131-3 standard compliant is increasing. The next step deals with the establishment of design methodologies for implementing distributed applications. Currently, most of the vendors offer a set of proprietary tools as well as their own guidelines for designing distributed applications. The IEC61499 standard tries to fill the gap, defining a generic architecture for designing distributed Industrial Process Measurement and control systems (IPMCSs), based on Functions Block (FB) networks. Currently, there are different tools that allow developing applications following the IEC61499 standard and the majority of them are Java based. They focus mainly on the programming aspects and all of them use the concept of Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB) as defined in the standard, FBs that must provide the interface between the control software and the hardware or the communication system. But guidelines to implement this type of FBs are provided neither by the standard nor by the available tools. This paper gives the steps to be done to develop a SIFB and the access to distributed I/O via Profibus DP is implemented following these guidelines. Thus, the available IEC61499 compliant software tools can be used to test real applications running with generic I/O hardware. The implementation merges concepts of developing software in C and java programming languages, as both of them are necessary to attach the hardware. © 2009 IFAC.

This paper presents a short-term prediction of the disturbance storm time (Dst) index using unscented Kalman filter. Joint and dual estimation methods are studied to examine an improvement of Dst index prediction by estimating model parameters and updating recursively. Comparison between these techniques and a fixed model parameter prediction are made in terms of root mean square error (rmse). It is found that joint and dual estimation methods give less rmse than state estimation alone for all Dst range, whereas state estimation alone shows better performance than joint and dual estimation for Dst below -80 nT.

This paper presents the development of a self-tuning controller design of minimum effort active noise control (ANC) for feedforward single-input single-output (SISO) architecture which includes the feedback acoustic path in the controller formulation. The controller design law is derived for suitable self-tuning implementation and the self-tuning controller is evaluated in a realistically constructed ANC simulation environment. The self-tuning controller design involves a two-stage identification process where the controller is replaced by a switch. This switch is closed and opened in sequence generating two transfer functions which are then used in constructing the controller specified by a minimum effort control law. The implementation requires an estimate of the secondary path transfer function which can be identified either online or offline. The controller design and implementation are evaluated in terms of the level of cancellation at the observer through simulation studies for various values of modified effort weighting parameter in the range 0 ≤ γ ≤ 1. It was found that the optimal controller designed using this technique which is constrained only by the accuracy of the two models identified using recursive least squares algorithm, yields good cancellation level.

The development of a chopstick-like two-fingered micromanipulator based on a hybrid mechanism is presented. The microhand consists of two 3-prismatic-revolute-spherical (PRS) parallel modules connected serially in a mirror image style. Each module has a long glass pipette as an end effector. The development process consists of three phases. In the first phase, analysis and mathematical modeling, a novel solution of the inverse kinematics problem (IKP) of a 3-revolute-prismatic-spherical (RPS) parallel module, is derived and applied with proper modification to the case of 3-PRS of the proposed mechanism. The solution is extended to the two-fingered hybrid mechanism of the microhand. In the optimization and design phase, the optimization of the chosen design parameters of a theoretical 3-PRS parallel module is carried out using two approaches: discretization method and genetic algorithms. Based on the optimal design parameters, a CAD model of the 3-PRS finger module is built, and a complementary optimization step using the ANSYS Workbench program is carried out to determine suitable characteristics of the pin flexure hinge. Finally, the total CAD model of the two-fingered hand is built. In the realization and implementation phase, the description of the hardware system of the two-fingered microhand prototype is presented. The program description, calibration method, practical Jacobian matrices, practical workspace, and error analysis of the prototype are discussed. © 2009 IEEE.

Today, there are numerous methods of quantitative analysis of the human movement. Basic quality of these methods is the high degree of accuracy and reliability of the obtained data. According to systematic approach human movement is qualified as a complex system that is, as such, subject to the principle of incompatibility (Zadeh, 1973) - i.e. making precise assertions is in reciprocity with their significance for the system. In this paper the outline of a method for qualitative analysis of human movement in the case of ergometer rowing have been proposed. Qualification process of kinematic parameters is done on the basis of previously collected quantitative data and with possession of prior contextual knowledge for their qualification by rowing experts. Possible applications of the proposed method, as well as guidelines for method improvement are briefly discussed.

Steel making is known as a complex manufacturing industrial process. Automation of the process represents a challenge. Empirical mathematical modeling of the process was used to design mill equipment, ensure productivity and service quality. This modeling approach shows many problems associated to complexity and time consumption. Soft computing techniques show significant modeling capabilities on handling complex nonlinear systems modeling. In this paper, we explore the use of Takagi-Sugeno (TS) technique to develop fuzzy models for the Hot-Rolling industrial nonlinear process. We propose three models for the rolling force, torque and slab temperature. A set of rules and membership functions which represents the dynamical relationship between the input and output of these models shall be presented. The performance of the fuzzy models will be compared to the known empirical models for the hot rolling system. Experimental data measured from the Ere˜gli Iron and Steel Factory in Turkey shall be used for the verification of the model outstanding performance.

Wind Power Plants (WPP) is the fastest growing energy sector. WPP consisting from a single turbine to as many as several hundred turbines. The acceptance of wind-generated power by the financial and developer communities from Romania as a viable enterprise is influenced by the risk associated with the capital equipment reliability. Increased risk or at least the perception of increased risk is generally accompanied by increased financial fees or interest rates. Wind turbine system reliability is considered to be an important component in any wind energy project. All above has developed the interest and need for maintenance services for wind turbines (WT). The aim of this paper is to identify the matters from maintenance in WPP areas and to do a literature review of the major aspects in a wind turbine that should be monitored.

Lyapunov methods and density functions provide dual characterizations of the solutions of a nonlinear dynamic system. This work exploits the idea of combining both techniques, to yield stability results that are valid for almost all the solutions of the system. Based on the combination of Lyapunov and density functions, analysis methods are proposed for the derivation of almost input-to-state stability, and of almost global stability in nonlinear systems. The techniques are illustrated for an inertial attitude observer, where angular velocity readings are corrupted by non-idealities.
