This paper is directed towards developing two new fuzzy logic-based representations for systems modelling and optimization using the notion of the normalized fuzzy matrices. The first is the arithmetic type based on dual cell representation, expressed by replacing each parameter with a pair of parentheses, the first is the actual value and the second is corresponding fuzzy level, (value, fuzzy level). The second is the visual type based on coloured cells representation expressed by replacing each parameter by its value and a coded (newly defined negative or positive colours based on the colour Hue circle) corresponding to its fuzzy level. For both cases, the theoretical foundations of the fuzzy logic algebra are presented for various cases of operations.

The foundation of new Fuzzy Logic Level Arithmetic and Visual representations, normalized fuzzy matrices, and the principle of fuzzy logic-based level tracking were developed by Gabr and Dorrah for systems modelling and optimization during all stages of formulation and solution. This new concept has an unlimited scope of generalizations and extensions to many classes of problems and systems in various disciplines. In this paper, further development of the above concept to the modelling and multi-objective linear optimization of multi-stations operating interconnected network in a fully fuzzy environment is presented. The development approach is based on a fuzzy logic-based arithmetic or visual representation incorporated in spreadsheet form with built-in using macros normal Visual Basic Application (VBA) Language. The approach is capable of accommodating an unlimited number of parameters and variables with open scales of fuzzy levels. These fuzzy levels can then be transferred at the end of solution to actual uncertainties. The approach is applied to a Case Study of 8 (eight) interconnected electric operated pump stations irrigation network of El Nasr Region at West of Delta (Egypt). The results demonstrated strongly the applicability and efficacy of the developed techniques to handle medium and large scale interconnected networks operating in a fully fuzzy environment.

This paper presents a new formulation of multi-objective linear optimization using the fuzzy logic-based arithmetic (or visual) representations developed originally by Gabr and Dorrah. A modified dual simplex algorithm is proposed as part of the formulation implementation procedure operating in a fully fuzzy environment. Moreover, forward and backward tracking mechanisms are incorporated with the above formulation for fuzzy level management and control. Cognitive mapping is used to describe the interaction between various parameters of the optimization formulation. Applications of the proposed approach to the multi-objective linear optimization of three stand alone electric pump stations of different sizes (Small, Medium and Large) are provided. The implementation is carried out using spread-sheet representation with the suggested optimization algorithms programmed in Visual Basic Applications (VBA). The results demonstrate the high efficacy and applicability of the fuzzy logic-based arithmetic and visual representations for real life problems operating in a fully fuzzy environment.

This paper discusses the computing development of a control algorithm using predictive functional control (PFC) for model-based that having one or more unstable poles. One basic ballistic missile model is used as an unstable model to formulate the control law algorithm using PFC. PFC algorithm development is computationally simple as a controller and it is not very complicated as the function of a missile will explode as it reaches the target. Furthermore, the analysis and issues of the implementation relating linear discrete-time unstable process are also being discussed. Hence, designed PFC algorithm need to find the suitable tuning parameters as its play an important part of the designing the autopilot controller. Thus, the tuning of the desired time constant, ¿ and small coincidence horizon n1 in a single coincidence point shows that the PFC control law is built better in the dynamic pole of the unstable missile mode. As a result, by using a trajectory set-point, some positive results is presented and discussed as the missile follow its reference trajectory via some simulation using MATLAB 7.0.

In this article an outline of a fuzzy qualitative framework for the indoor rowing kinematics analysis have been proposed. Main goal of introducing this fuzzy qualitative framework is to bridge the gap between high level of quantitative details obtained with various present - day sensory or video inputs and symbolic representation used by rowing experts. A Fuzzy qualification process of kinematic parameters is done on the basis of previously collected quantitative data and with possession of prior contextual knowledge for their qualification by rowing experts. Quantitative data acquisition is included indoor rowing kinematics recording by video motion tracking system. Generalizations of the proposed method on kinematics analysis of a common indoor human motion, problems of symbolic representation, as well as guidelines for method improvement are briefly discussed.

Prognostic is nowadays recognized as a key feature in maintenance strategies as it should allow avoiding inopportune maintenance spending. Real prognostic systems are however scarce in industry. That can be explained from different aspects, on of them being the difficulty of choosing an efficient technology: many approaches to support the prognostic process exist, whose applicability is highly dependent on industrial constraints. Thus, the general purpose of the paper is to explore the way of performing failure prognostics so that manager can act consequently. Different aspects of prognostic are discussed. The prognostic process is (re)defined and an overview of prognostic metrics is given. Following that, the 'prognostic approaches' are described. The whole aims at giving an overview of the prognostic area, both from the academic and industrial points of views. © 2009 EUCA.

The need for flexibility in manufacturing systems is continuously growing. This need deals with the establishment of design methodologies for implementing distributed applications. The IEC61499 define a generic architecture for designing distributed applications, based on Functions Block (FB) networks. The interface between the control software and the hardware is achieved by means of the so called Service Interface FB. But guidelines to implement this type of FBs are provided neither by the standard nor by the available tools. On the other hand, one of the most widely used industrial communication standard is OPC that enables the exchange of data between multi-vendor devices and control applications without any proprietary restrictions. Thus, an easy integration of this communication standard within IEC61499 applications may contribute to consolidate such standard. This paper presents the guidelines to use OPC in industrial applications through the definition an implementation of SIFBs to access process data using OPC-DA (OPC Data Access) specification.

In this paper, control of parallel single-phase inverters in direct-quadrature(DQ) rotating frame based on droop method is proposed. For each inverter, a secondary orthogonal imaginary circuit is created to provide the second phase required for the transformation; thus a DQ model of the inverter is obtained. The DQ transformation provides a time-invariant model of the inverter which makes the control design similar to that of dc-dc converters. The recognition of this analogy is important in that all of advanced dc-dc converters control techniques that have been previously developed can be applied to the control parallel inverters. The controller then is designed in DQ frame. Theoretically, infinite loop gain can be achieved in DQ rotating frame resulting in the elimination of the steady state error at the fundamental frequency of the inverter. The output impedance of the inverters is also considered, to ensure the decoupling between active and reactive power control using droop method. Simulation results are provided to prove the concept.

Using student generated audio to enhance learning

This paper explores the issues surrounding the use of audio in learning and offers an alternative to podcasting. It considers the practicalities of enabling students to generate their own audio recordings and the potential to enhance and personalise learning in a self directed way that suits their individual learning styles. There is some discussion of hardware and its accessibility, cost and ease of use as well as protocols on what audio can/cannot be recorded or shared amongst students. The paper explores different types of scenario where recording can be used beneficially and uses real student case studies to demonstrate its efficacy, as perceived by the students. There is also particular emphasis on the benefits to specific student groups, including those with English as an additional language or students with learning difficulties. In summary the paper gives evidence of how student generated audio can be embedded into the curriculum and the benefits it can bring.
