With the wide spread of video usage in many fields of our lives, it becomes very important to develop new techniques for video denoising. Spatial video denoising using wavelet transform has been the focus of the current researches as it requires less computation and more suitable for real-time applications. Two specific techniques for spatial video denoising using wavelet transform are considered in this work: 2D Discrete Wavelet Transform (2D DWT) and 2D Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (2D DTCWT). Each of these techniques has its advantages and disadvantages. The first technique gives less quality at high levels of noise but consumes less time while the second gives high quality video while consuming long. In this work, we introduce an intelligent denoising system that makes a tradeoff between the quality of the denoised video and the time required for denoising. The system first estimates the noise level in the video frame then accordingly chooses the proper of the two denoising techniques to apply on the frame. The simulation results show that the proposed system is more suitable for real-time applications where the time is critical while giving high quality videos especially at low to moderate levels of noise.

This paper relates properties of operators with the well-known concepts of positive realness and passivity properties in dynamic systems and their associate transfer functions. Those concepts together with very close related ones are first examined from a physical point of view. Then, they are related with hyperstability and properties of transfer functions while the hyperstability theorem is revisited and interpreted. Finally, the above concepts are compared to the mathematical concepts of positivity and closely related ones in operator theory in Hilbert spaces.

Material or fluid transportation is a commonly encountered phenomenon in industrial applications, generating variable time delay that makes the design of feedback control loops more difficult. This paper investigates the applicability of MPC (Model Predictive control) strategies to this type of processes. The experimental setup consists of a heated tank, of which the outlet temperature (measured at a certain distance from the tank) is controlled by manipulating the outlet flow. The nonlinear EPSAC (Extended Prediction Self-Adaptive control) approach is used, which reduces the complexity of nonlinear optimization to iterative quadratic programming. It is shown that developing a process model in which dynamics are decoupled from the variable time delay leads to a Smith predictor-like control structure, that allows the proper operation of the control loop with fixed control parameters. The performance of the predictive controller is compared on the pilot plant to the performance of classic control approaches for systems with time delay.

The complexity of Power systems is included into a new paradigm - Complex Adaptive systems - and the modelling and control of Power systems based on intelligent agents are considered. Some concepts on hierarchical and heterarchical architectures which include different intelligent techniques are also presented in this paper.

The paper deals with the calculation of hysteresis power loss in cores of electromechanical converters. The analysis was carried out using the Jiles-Atherton model of ferromagnetic hysteresis incorporated into two-dimensional time-stepping finite element model. A vector hysteresis model was constructed by the vectorisation of a scalar model. The total power loss due to hysteresis was split into two component, one originating from the purely alternating magnetic field, and the second being a consequence of the local predomination of vector nature of magnetic field distribution. Two computational examples are presented showing the general applicability of the algorithm for determination of power loss distribution.

In this paper we introduce a discrete event system model of immune systems of mammalians using Markov Decision Processes based on Petri Nets Models. Based on immunological principles we propose an approach in order to study the mechanisms that govern the immune system's functionality. A two-module algorithm is developed, which launch a specific action against an anomalous situation. The Petri nets tools are assumed in this approach. Also, Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) with a truncated state space to the problem with infinite state space considered. We also propose a new algorithm to build a large model (e.g., a macro-model) of immune mechanisms of mammalians. We show that an optimal stationary policy exists and we apply the results of [1] to a dynamic scheduling problem of the immunological response to external stimuli.

This paper presents the development of an active vibration control (AVC) mechanism for a flexible plate structure using a Genetic Algorithm (GAs) strategy. The global optimisation technique of GAs is utilised to obtain a dynamic model of a flexible plate structure and verified within the AVC system. The GA based AVC algorithm thus developed is implemented within a flexible plate simulation environment and its performance in the reduction of vibration of the plate is assessed. The validation of the algorithm is presented in both the time and frequency domains. An assessment of the results thus obtained is given in comparison to the AVC system using conventional recursive least squares (RLS) method. Investigations reveal that the developed GA based AVC system performs better in the suppression of vibration of a flexible plate structure compared to an RLS based AVC system.
