A three step method for obtaining nearly maximum likelihood ARMA spectral estimates is presented. The computational complexity of the algorithm is comparable to Yule-Walker methods, but the method gives asymptotically efficient estimates. A practical fault detection scheme based on a model discrimination approach is proposed for dynamical systems with various failure modes which can not he explicitly described by mathematical representations. Using ARX modelling, the Kullback Discrimination Information (KDI) is adopted as a model distortion measure to detect dynamics failures. In order to calculate the KDI for finite but large data sets with-out dealing with very large matrices, we derive an iterative algorithm of low dimension based on Baye' rule. The KDI is used as a detection index in a thresholding approach. This detection scheme can be combined with identification to diagnose the system operating mode. The effectiveness of the method has been confirmed through a simulation study of a second order servo system.

The Kullback discrimination index can be used to test whether two models obtained from different data sets are equal or not. Such an index can be used for model validation, which then is carried out as a crossvalidation. However, the form of the index and its implementation differ from traditional crossvalidation. This paper studies a measurement, evaluation, and control system of communication-and-formation process of concept (especially morality concept) in education. The system is illustrated as a block diagram and is studied from a viewpoint of multiinput-multioutput, interactive and fuzzy type feedback control system, where we can correspond class pupils to a controlled object, and teacher's final concept structure and core-sentence structure to a desired output and an operating input (controlling input), respectively. We have investigated the model relations between concept structures and core-sentence structures, which greatly helped the teacher to design both a lesson plan outline and its following “lesson plan" for the classwork, and also to practice the classwork itself. A computer program for test data processing is developed to offer a detailed and better feedback information for the teacher in a few minutes.

This paper describes the results of inference and hint-effect experiments, and analyses the human decision-making process from fuzzy-theoretic and concept-formational viewpoints. To begin with, we conduct a fuzzy-theoretic experiment on inference and show an interrelation among memory, newly-known information, and inference. Next, we discuss the problem of the decision-making process subject to a specific and newly given information. In other words, the fuzzy-theoretic experiment concerning with some hints in the estimation and decision processes of the card arrangement is conducted. Then, the concept-formational process is analysed clearly by means of the introduction of both the cusp-curved surface in catastrophe theory and fuzziness concept in fuzzy theory. Finally, we show the hint effect in the estimation and decision processes.

OO It is a matter of general consensus that in the last decade the H _ optimization for robust control has dominated the research effort in controlsystems theory. Much attention has been paid equally to the mathematical instrumentation and the computational aspects. There are several excellent monographs that cover the standard topics in the area. Among the recent issues we have to cite here Linear Robust control authored by Green and Limebeer (Prentice Hall 1995), Robust controller Design Using Normalized Coprime Factor Plant Descriptions - by McFarlane and Glover (Springer Verlag 1989), Robust and Optimal control - by Zhou, Doyle and Glover (Prentice Hall 1996). Thus, when the authors of the present monograph decided to start the work they were confronted with a very rich literature on the subject. However two reasons motivated their initiative. The first concerns the theory in which the whole development of the book was embedded. As is well known, there are several ways of approach oo ing H and robust control theory. Here we mention three relevant direc tions chronologically ordered: a) the first makes use of a generalization of the Beurling-Lax theorem to Krein spaces; b) the second makes use of a generalization of Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation theory and commutant lifting theorem; c) the third, and probably the most attractive from an el evate engineering viewpoint, is the two Riccati equations based approach which offers a complete solution in state space form.
