Gestural interaction uses human gestures to interact with an interactive system. Many efforts have been done to define gestures and facilitate a comfortable and natural way to interact. In this paper an experimental session in laboratory conditions is presented aiming at analyzing the usability factors of a visionbased gestural interface. Based on the results, recommendations are given to modify the configuration of some parameters between the human, the Kinect sensor, Kinect Mouse and the virtual visit of a museum with the final aim to improve the overall interaction. This paper introduces a systematic approach to synthesize linear parameter-varying (LPV) representations of nonlinear (NL) systems which are originally defined by control affine state-space representations. The conversion approach results in LPV state-space representations in the observable canonical form. Based on the relative degree concept of NL systems, the states of a given NL representation are transformed to new coordinates that provide its normal form. In the SISO case, all nonlinearities of the original system are embedded in one NL function which is factorized to construct the LPV form. An algorithms is proposed for this purpose. The resulting transformation yields an LPV model where the scheduling parameter depends on the derivatives of the inputs and outputs of the system. In addition, if the states of the NL model can be measured or estimated, then the procedure can be modified to provide LPV models scheduled by these states. Examples are included for illustration.

control of the plasma inductance is an essential tool for the successful operation of Tokamaks in order to overcome stability issues as well as the new challenges specific to advanced scenarios operation. Thus, tokamak operation may benefit from model predictive control techniques to extend the pulse duration by reducing instabilities while guaranteeing tokamak integrity. The numerical results seem to indicate that internal inductance and current profiles can be adequately controlled which will influence the L-H transition timing, the density peaking and pedestal pressure. In this regard, the need for optimal, robust control emerges as a key factor in the development of a nuclear fusion reactor.

Background: Recently high-throughput sequencing (HTS) using next generation sequencing techniques became useful in digital gene expression *** study introduces analysis options for HTS data based on mapping to miRBase or counting and grouping of identical sequence reads. Those approaches allow a hypothesis free detection of miRNA differential expression. Methods. We compare our results to microarray and qPCR data from one set of RNA samples. We use Illumina platforms for microarray analysis and miRNA sequencing of 20 samples from benign follicular thyroid adenoma and malignant follicular thyroid carcinoma. Furthermore, we use three strategies for HTS data analysis to evaluate miRNA biomarkers for malignant versus benign follicular thyroid tumors. Results: High correlation of qPCR and HTS data was observed for the proposed analysis methods. However, qPCR is limited in the differential detection of miRNA isoforms. Moreover, we illustrate a much broader dynamic range of HTS compared to microarrays for small RNA studies. Finally, our data confirm hsa-miR-197-3p, hsa-miR-221-3p, hsa-miR-222-3p and both hsa-miR-144-3p and hsa-miR-144-5p as potential follicular thyroid cancer biomarkers. Conclusions: Compared to microarrays HTS provides a global profile of miRNA expression with higher specificity and in more detail. Summarizing of HTS reads as isoform groups (analysis pipeline B) or according to functional criteria (seed analysis pipeline C), which better correlates to results of qPCR are promising new options for HTS analysis. Finally, data opens future miRNA research perspectives for HTS and indicates that qPCR might be limited in validating HTS data in detail. © 2014 Stokowy et al.;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

In this paper the problem of adaptive observer design in the presence of disturbances is studied, and an augmented adaptive observer is proposed. First, the H∞ gain of a conventional adaptive observer is estimated, which characterizes the effect of disturbances on output errors. Next, it is shown that if the disturbance is "matched" in the plant equations, then it is possible to introduce additional sliding-mode feedback, dependent on the plant output, improving the accuracy of observation. Simulation results confirm the improvement. © IFAC.

A proposal for optimal control of a microgrid powered by solar energy with mixed temporary storage based on a battery bank and hydrogen is presented and evaluated here by means of simulations. The proposal is based on a Predictive controller that optimizes the operational costs by taking into account the value of the energy generated, the cost of locally storing energy, the aging of the components and the operational constraints. The Constrained Mixed-Integer Predictive control problem obtained is then solved using a formulation based on the duration of the states, which simplifies the numerical solution. Some simulation results are presented to show the validity of the proposed approach.

A proposal for the advanced control of a hybrid solar/gas air-conditioning system and its testing by simulation is presented. The proposal is based on a Predictive controller that optimizes the operational costs by taking into account the costs of gas heating and the electrical consumption. The Constrained Mixed-Integer Predictive control problem obtained is then solved using a formulation based on the duration of the states, which simplifies the numerical solution. The simulation at different times of the year is carried out in order to show the validity of the proposed approach

Using Laplace transforms we extend the economic production quantity (EPQ) model by analysing cash flows from a net present value (NPV) viewpoint. We obtain an exact expression for the present value of the cash flows in the EPQ problem. From this, we are able to derive the optimal batch size. We obtain insights into the monotonicity and convexity of the present value of each of the cash flows, and show that there is a unique minimum in the present value of the sum of the cash flows in the extended EPQ model. We also obtain exact point solutions at several values in the parameter space. We compare the exact solution to a Maclaurin series expansion and show that serious errors exist with the first-order approximation when the production rate is close to the demand rate. Finally, we consider an alternative formulation of the EPQ model when the opportunity cost of the inventory investment is made explicit. © The authors 2012.
