Classical heating of residential areas is very energy-intensive, so alternatives are needed, including renewable energies and advanced heating technologies. Thus, the present paper introduces a new methodology for comprehensive variant analysis for future district heating planning, aiming at optimizing emissions and costs. For this, an extensive Modelica-based modelling study comprising models of heating center, heat grid pipelines and heating interface units to buildings are coupled in co-simulations. These enable a comparative analysis of the economic feasibility and sustainability for various technologies and energy carriers to be carried out. The new modular and highly parameterizable building model serves for validation of the introduced heat grid model. The results show that bio-methane as an energy source reduces carbon equivalent emissions by nearly 70% compared to conventional natural gas heating, and the use of hydrogen as an energy source reduces carbon equivalent emissions by 77% when equipped with a heat pump. In addition, the use of ground source heat pumps has a high economic viability when economic benefits are taken into account. The study findings highlight the importance of strategic planning and flexible design in the early stages of district development in order to achieve improved energy efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint.

A burgeoning topic in the current energy transition are the huge costs of redispatch congestion management (CM) in large transmission systems. One of the German transmission system operators (TSOs) raised the critical inquiry of how to allocate the redispatch costs amongst TSOs in an equitable and beneficial way. Previously, a Shapley value-based approach has been introduced on small test grids, using the linear DC approximation of optimal power flow (OPF). However, within the application of CM, its feasibility and accuracy for large-scale power grids and its impact on the computed congestions remain uncertain. Therefore, this study investigates the applicability of the DC OPF compared to the exact AC OPF with regard to the Shapley values, for both small and large-scale grids. Numerical simulation shows significant differences in the congested lines, the overall redispatch costs, and the Shapley values. These findings suggest that for future CM, the TSOs should further investigate AC OPF solutions.

Various algorithms can be used to optimize the operation of energy hubs, which differ in complexity and optimization quality. The heuristic Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) is able to approximate solutions to complex and non-convex problems. In comparison, the Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and the Mixed-Integer Quadratic Program (MIQP) are able to compute the optimal solution of an approximated model. The present paper focuses on the comparison of energy hub schedule optimization using an EA, a MILP, and a MIQP. Furthermore, the source code for the MILP and MIQP models is publicly available. In our comparison, the analytical solver can optimize the schedule of an exemplary energy hub within seconds, and the EA takes multiple minutes to compute. The schedule generated with the analytical models follows the target closely with a similar root-mean-square error as the schedule generated by the EA.

Signatures are one of the most commonly used biometrics for individuals’ identification and verification. Several approaches are proposed every year by researchers to improve the accuracy of the verification systems. A machine learning-based system is presented in this work. The LighGBM is used for the classification process. The SigComp’11 Chinese dataset is used to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed system. The results showed that the proposed system achieved a robust system compared to the state of the art. The system is applied using different combinations of signature features to eliminate the factor of the feature selection. The minimum AER achieved was 1.98%.

This paper presents an experimental study that compares the performance of four selected metaheuristic algorithms for optimizing a time delay system model. Time delay system models are complex and challenging to optimize due to their inherent characteristics, such as non-linearity, multi-modality, and constraints. The study includes an explanation of the choice and core functionality of the selected algorithms, which are both baseline and state-of-the-art variants of self-organizing migrating algorithm (SOMA), state-of-the-art variant from the Success-History-based Adaptive Differential Evolution family of algorithms, with emphasis on diverse search (DISH algorithm), and Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm. The hyperparameters of the metaheuristic algorithms were set using the iRace automatic algorithm configuration framework. The paper emphasizes the importance of metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time-delay systems to develop more effective and efficient control strategies and precise model identifications. The experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art algorithms with specific adaptive mechanisms like population organization process, diverse search and adaptation mechanisms ensuring a gradual transition from exploration to exploitation. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the challenges and advantages of using metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time delay systems. The results provide valuable insights into the performance of modern metaheuristic algorithms and can help guide the selection of appropriate adaptive mechanisms of metaheuristics. © 2023 IEEE.

The measurement of the dissolved ozone concentration is beneficial in various areas, where ozone is applied, such as medicine, disinfection, food processing, and wastewater treatment. Especially for medical ozone therapy, the measurement directly before and during the treatment is essential to avoid over- and under-dosing. For the wide range application of ozone measurement during medical therapy and in research, low-cost and reproducible measurement devices are indispensable. We present a low-cost photometer that measures the ozone concentration with UV photometry. It consists mainly of 3D-printed parts, while all other parts are commercially available. The root mean squared percentage error of the designed photometer is 14.68% and the root mean squared error is $\mathbf{1.04}\mathbf{mgl}^{-1}$ . We measured concentrations between $\mathbf{0\ mgl}^{-1}$ and $\mathbf{19}\mathbf{mgl}^{-1}$ , since higher concentrations cannot be produced with the ozone generator used. In principle, however, higher concentrations can also be measured with the photometer, such as the concentrations typical in ozone therapy of up to $\mathbf{30}\mathbf{mgl}^{-1}$ . We achieve good measurement results with the photometer in comparison with a commercial reference measuring instrument for dissolved ozone, although the reference instrument has a mean square error of 8.2%, but is more expensive by a factor of 17 than the photometer presented here. Low-cost instruments, such as the photometer, provide accurate and inexpensive measurements that are adaptable to a wide range of applications. For example, the photometer can be used in medicine for ozone therapy. The ozone concentration can be measured directly before the injection and thus before the treatment.

This paper explains in detail the development, validation and simulation of a standard PI controller that can boost the WECS (Wind energy conversion system) power through two strategies. In the first strategy, the power is boosted by increasing the generator angular velocity through the direct increase of the angular velocity of the wind turbine rotor by slightly pitching the blades. In the second strategy, the power is boosted by increasing the load torque of the generator, through the direct increase of the load torque of the wind turbine rotor. For achieving this goal, the following tasks have been accomplished: a wind energy conversion system nonlinear mathematical model has been developed, a gain scheduled proportional-integral (PI) controller as the baseline controller, and two gain scheduled proportional-integral (PI) power-boosting controllers for the two power-boosting strategies. For the power-boosting controllers, it is also presented a logic that switches between baseline and power booster controllers when certain wind speeds conditions are met. The response, stability, performance and the increase in the shaft torsion, tower and blades bending moments of the gain scheduled PI power-boosting controllers have been compared with the baseline controller. By comparing the output power response of the controllers, it can be seen that the power booster controllers boost the power when the defined conditions are met. Finally, for boosting the power of a WECS in certain conditions the most efficient way is by increasing the generator load torque, because this strategy increases the least the loading of the main components of a WECS. This power boosting strategy implementation it might require the change (or reinforcement) of the drive train shaft, if it cannot take the extra loading created by power boosting controller. © 2022 IEEE.

The widespread of Internet of Things (IoT) has increased the need of accurate indoor localization methods. The indoor localization problem aims to determine the object position in technology-deficiated environments., where the solution requires the application of both alternative sensors and efficient algorithms. This paper addresses three fingerprinting techniques and provides a comparative analysis based on real measurements. Namely, the performance of Weighted K-Nearest Neighbor (WKNN), Random Forest (RF) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) fingerprinting approaches are evaluated. First, a database is generated of Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) values of five access points (APs) in laboratory environment. Then, heatmap-based fingerprinting is elaborated., and a comprehensive analysis is conducted in two important cases. In the first case all points are line of sight (LOS), while in the second case, the modules are covered by a column. The obtained results show that the ANN-based approach outperforms the WKNN and RF methods, thereby proving its efficient applicability in indoor localization problems. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper introduces a multiobjective optimization strategy for minimizing both energy pulsation and power dissipation in modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The occurrence of energy pulsation and power dissipation in MMCs has the negative potential to lead to a reduction in efficiency, to an increase in thermal stress, and to reliability issues. A Pareto front analysis shows that simultaneous improvement of both objectives is not possible. Analytical function optimization provides an exact solution for the case where only energy dissipation is considered. By optimizing the tradeoffs between minimizing energy pulsation and reducing power losses, this work offers a comprehensive solution to enhance the performance of MMCs.
