Improving energy efficiency by monitoring system behavior and predicting future energy scenarios in light of increased penetration of renewable energy sources are becoming increasingly important, especially for energy systems that distribute and provide heat. On this background, digital twins of cities become paramount in advancing urban energy system planning and infrastructure management. The use of recorded energy data from sensors in district digital twins in collaborative co-simulation platforms is a promising way to analyze detailed system behavior and estimate future scenarios. However, the development and coupling of multi-physics energy system models need to be validated before they can be used for further in-depth analyses. In the present paper, a new multi-physics/-modal and highly configurable building model is presented. Its accuracy and reliability are validated by comparison with data from the TABULA project, ensuring its relevance and applicability to real-world scenarios. The modularity and flexibility with regard to the system configurability of the developed building model is evaluated on various real building types. In addition, the applicability of the building model in a multi-energy system is highlighted by implementing the model in a collaborative co-simulation setup and by coupling it to a district heating grid model in yearly co-simulations. The simulation results for the proposed multi-physical/-modal building modeling concept show a very high level of agreement compared to published reference building data and can therefore be used individually as flexible and modular building models including both thermal and electrical systems for future sector-coupled energy system analyses in view of sustainability. This paper presents a solution to a problem that Khan Steel Company in Afghanistan encountered in their induction furnace. The motivation for deploying induction heating technology in the industry is outlined, including a description of the current situation. Basic approaches for managing this technology, critical to the industry's success, are also provided. The process of creating an induction heating model using the COMSOL Multiphysics environment is described, with emphasis placed on the importance of starting the machine and determining the system's dynamics once it is in production mode. Finally, an identification and control proposal based on the distributed parameter system is presented, followed by a demonstration of the proposed control system using simulation results.

Industry 4.0-compliant digitalization is intensively penetrating the industrial Eco-system, bringing its benefits by generating or improving new complementary functionalities and associated business, providing a feasible way to interconnect stakeholders within the value chain and supply-chain, as well as along the product and system's Life-Cycle, which can share digitalized data and information in form of Added-value Services. To facilitate perform those businesses, Industry 4.0-compliant service-oriented infrastructures are required. Functionalities and associated data and information can be provided/exposed and/or consumed as services by systems of Cyber-physical things. In the language of Industry 4.0, those physical things are identified as “Assets”. Each physical “Asset” has associated a Cyber-part, the so called Asset Administration Shell (AAS), which contains a set of digitalized Data/Information/Function-Models, i.e., Digital Twins, and responsible for supporting an Industry 4.0-compliant communication/networking of the digitalized Asset. The AAS is fully responsible for the provision, exposition, consumption, composition, orchestration of services. The broad adoption of the AAS in a digitalized industrial environment is mainly depending on the costs of the digitalization-migration-process, which needs to respond to a set of functional and technical requirements. Among others, requirements for using Low-Cost technologies supporting the implementation of AAS with low energy consumption, efficiency and flexibility, should essentially be fulfilled. In this scenario, the authors present a service-collector of AAS that is implemented in commercial low-cost technology and deployed in a common Industry 4.0-compliant network, using REST-API and and OPC UA based infrastructure. In power electronics, the modular multilevel converter (MMC) is an easily scalable topology with an high output voltage quality. It is suitable for the transmission of large amounts of electrical power over long distances, which supports the realization of the ongoing energy transition. State-of-the-art methods require a comparatively large total cell capacitance in the system for energy pulsations during operation. In the present paper, in order to minimize this total capacitance, first a new method is developed to model the system, and second, by help of this model, optimal current trajectories are calculated. These currents are used for control to reduce the energy pulsation over the complete operating range, and thus, to better utilize the hardware. The new method independent on the Clarke transformations is implemented on a laboratory scale setup, and measurement results are presented which validate the new method. Furthermore, the new method is compared to the state-of-the-art method of the compensation of the 2nd harmonic and outperforms the latter significantly. This applies to the entire operating range for different power factors. A total reduction of up to 44% of the energy pulsations is achieved. © 2020 IEEE.

Fused filament fabrication is a popular 3D printing process where layers of fusible plastic filament are used to build a workpiece. However, the high manual maintenance needs limit its potential. Given the common incidence of defects in the printed components, automated solutions detecting these errors while printing are of great benefit to every practitioner. Current research primarily focuses on monitoring and optimizing manufacturing processes and printing parameters or using additional sensors to directly observe the printing process and identify errors. However, there is no established procedure for assessing print quality in real time with minimal additional sensors. Our proposed computer vision-based deep-learning system overcomes previous limitations by detecting errors in 3D printing and assessing the quality of printed parts in real time using only a single camera. We record and provide a multi-class image dataset that encompasses different printed geometries, error classes, and printing condition variations. Our extensive evaluation shows that considering various geometries and printing conditions is vital for detecting printing errors. Our proposed computer vision-based deep-learning system enhances 3D printing by automating error detection, enabling practitioners to increase efficiency and print high-quality workpieces.

The rapid dynamics of changes in the definition of requirements when deploying new technologies means an increase in demands on the volume and scope of skills and knowledge of experts in the design of solutions and their implementation. PLC-based control systems designed for industrial automation can also be included in this problem area. The article deals with the possibility of rapid design and testing of PLC control algorithms using X-in-the-Loop techniques of Model-based Design approach. The control algorithm is implemented using visual programming techniques in the form of state diagrams utilizing the Matlab StateFlow tool. The given proposal is analyzed from the point of view of different approaches to the implementation of communication between the development PC and the real control PLC SIMATIC S7-300 connected to the real part of the model production line. Data exchange is carried out in two ways. The first way of communication is the exchange of uncompressed and compressed images of inputs and outputs via IP communication. The second way is to use the OPC UA architecture. The result of the article is a case study of the use of the XiL approach in the design phase of the control of the AFB Factory production line module with a summary of the possibilities, advantages and disadvantages of alternative partial solutions.

The real capacitors' behaviour in electric circuits modelled by a single capacity deviates from the ideal one. In order to find better compromises between precision and simplicity, different C-R-L models are used. In these models, C, R, L are called equivalent parameters and take constant values. Under these assumptions, the capacitors are modelled as lumped parameter subsystems although it is well known that the real capacitors are essentially distributed parameter systems. As highlighted in this paper, the capacitors are also time-variant subsystems. To prove this, we use two types of experimental data: data measured during the capacitor’s discharge process and data obtained from frequency characteristics. The article proposes two estimation methods of equivalent values for the model parameters C and R based on their time variance highlighted by the experimental data. The estimation methods use a system of equations associated with the discharging of capacitors, respectively, with the frequency characteristics via polynomial regression. The experiments were carried out with an electrolytic polymer capacitor rated 220 μF, 25 V, 2.5 A rms, 85 ℃, designed mainly for energy storage and filtering, the results being confirmed by experiments performed on other similar capacitors. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. In recent years, serious games have gained traction as an aid to traditional teaching and training methods. While releasing a serious game which can run on multiple platforms is desired, this comes with its own problems, mainly the need to develop multiple projects in parallel. We have identified this as a significant obstacle preventing people from developing cross-platform serious games, and in this paper propose a solution in the form of a system which unifies platform-specific controls. This results in the need to maintain a single code base, with platform-specific code being written only for reading and processing the inputs. The system identifies on which platform the game is currently running and selects the correct code to process inputs. The processed inputs are abstracted, and the rest of the game uses the abstracted inputs, regardless of the current platform.

The Proportional Integral Derivative (PID), the Computed Torque Control (CTC), the Fuzzy Logic (FL), and the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) controllers are some examples of methods widely used in the industrial sectors for control purposes. All of them have been largely developed and investigated, but besides their advantages, they have some drawbacks which have not been completely solved yet. Other types of approaches, especially used in Robotics, are classical adaptive methods such as the Adaptive Inverse Dynamics Control (AIDC), the Adaptive Slotine-Li Control (ASCL), and the Model Reference Adaptive Controller (MRAC). They need a formally accurate robot model and they fail in the presence of unknown external disturbances or friction. This work aims to propose a new Fixed Point Iteration-based (FPI) adaptive controller that applies Control Lyapunov Function for kinematic design, and a multi-dimensional generalization of the Rodrigues formula for adaptation. The first one is derived using the error of the second derivative of the generalized coordinates and tries to move the error to zero exponentially. The second one is used to develop an Adaptive Deformation function to compensate for the inaccurate dynamic model where the new output for the vector of the second derivative of the generalized coordinates is obtained by smooth rotations. The concept was simulated by using Julia code which demonstrated the feasibility of the idea providing after the transient an oscillating error which ranges between -0.005 and 0.004 rad.

Recent developments in the production sector are slowly beginning to test Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and their ability to compete with the remainder of the market, especially the enterprises specializing in large-scale mass production. The ever-increasing demand gradually creates a large gap between the various competitors and often forces the SME to take risks when making important decisions regarding production control. One of the solutions to this problem can be the use of a simulation based Digital Twin (DT) as a decisionmaking tool for production control. Naturally, the established on-site hardware and software differs for each job-shop, thus making the creation of generally applicable solutions almost impossible. The biggest issue that needs to be solved is the discrepancy in data between the on-site software and the newly created DT of the production line. Manual data transformation and transfer is one of the options for the integration process, but it requires an experienced operator with a specific skillset to perform the actions necessary for seamless execution of this process. Automating the process of data integration between two systems helps alleviate the entry requirements for the DT technology implementation into a job-shop environment. The presented case study explores the possibility of using automated algorithms for production order data evaluation and processing which can be applied to other data types with minor adjustments to the methods proposed.
