It has been found that the composites of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and epoxy resin could greatly enhance damping ability while the stiffness is kept at a very high level. In this research, carbon nanotube enhanced epoxy resin is fabricated. The dynamic properties of the nanotube composites are experimentally studied. A testing apparatus for obtaining material properties is set up and measurement procedures are given. Multiple groups of specimens are made for investigations. In particular, the material loss factors together with dynamic stiffness are measured for the specimens with different CNT weight ratio. Experimental results show that CNT additive can provide the composite with significant damping without easily undergoing large strain as compared to traditional damping materials, and the dynamic stiffness of the nanotube composite could be even higher than the pure epoxy. It is promising that the nanotube composites could be used in the structural vibration applications when both damping and stiffness are important.

Current dual-stage actuator design uses withut pssiv daming. piezoelectric patches only In this paper, we propose a dual-stage servo system using enhanced active-passive hybrid piezoelectric actuators. The proposed configuration will improve the existing dual-stage actuators for higher precision and shock resistance, due to the incorporation of passive damping in the design. Finite element analyses of different types of piezoelectric actuators in a disk arm assembly under shock impulse are reported. In the shock test, a 175 g and 1 ms sinusoid acceleration pulse is applied at one end of the base and other end of the base is fixed. The shock responses of the disk arm assembly with different configurations of the piezoelectric actuators are simulated and compared. In the finite element analysis, the viscoelastic damping layers in the hybrid actuators are modeled with the Prony series, which parameters are determined from dynamic frequency data of nomograph.

In space environment, the power supply for space manipulator is limited because of lower ratio of the solar array. Therefore, the space manipulator's trajectory should be optimum so that the torque of manipulator can be minimized in order to save the power. This paper presents a minimum-torque path planning scheme for space manipulator. In this formulation, Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to minimize the objective function. The planning procedure is performed in joint space and with respect to all constraints, such as joint angle constraints, joint velocity constraints, torque constraints. We use a GA to search the optimal joint inter-knot parameters in order to realize the minimum-torque. These joint inter-knot parameters mainly include joint angle and joint angular velocities. The simulation results test that the proposed minimum-torque path planning method has satisfactory performance.

A label is a necessity part of a garment. It is attached to clothing to state the fabric contents, care instructions, and etc. For most of the current label pattern design software, the designer needs to create a new pattern file for each new label to be produced. This paper presents an "Expert Label Pattern Design System" that is aimed at automating this tedious label pattern design process. The expert system is implemented using Frame-base Expert System. A software, namely "VLabel", is developed for this system using Visual C++ in the Window® environment. The system has been developed and tested by an industrial sponsor, SML Group Limited. It has been proven to work well and used for production in the shop floor now.
