Software development to efficiently integrate analytical and pilot plant process data becomes critical to petrochemical pilot plant operations. The core of process engineering in pilot plants relies on the accuracy and consistency of process and analytical data acquisition. The disparity between the process and analytical data formats raises obstacles for the preparation and centralization of combined data. data engineers end up spending more time compiling data compared to analyzing and interpreting data. Consequently, design modifications and yield optimization resulting from data analysis requires a longer turnaround time due to more time spent centralizing the data. A suggested solution to this dilemma is business process optimization. The purpose of business process optimization is to automate tasks with software where possible allowing personnel to focus on their specialties. To centralize and streamline, the data flow between the pilot plant, chemical analysts, and data analysts, a data warehouse, and customized software system were integrated into an operational petrochemical pilot plant. The three steps to achieve this, i.e., streamlining sample documentation, analytical data access, process data access, are discussed. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2012 AIChE Spring Meeting and 8th Global Congress on Process Safety (Houston, TX 4/1-5/2012).

Prior papers have described prototype sensors that were developed to autonomously map pathway, flow velocity, and dimensions as they flow through karst conduits. The prototype sensors are equipped with sonar and magnetometers to measure conduit morphology and orientation. The sensors are developed to be approximately neutrally buoyant but have been equipped with a propulsion system to enable the sensors to negotiate around impediments in the flow channel and avoid stalling at the walls of the conduit or cave. data collected during an excursion are downloaded from the sensor upon completion of the survey mission. An autonomous sensor was successfully used to characterize a segment in Honey Creek Cave, a wet cave in south-central Texas. Sonar proved to be effective in measuring the cave dimensions and the velocity of flow. A magnetometer was used to orient the pathway taken by the sensor. Together, these data provided a representative reproduction of the oriented morphology of the wet cave. Two variations of the initial generation of sensors have been developed to meet the requirements of projects funded by the United States Army Corps of Engineers for mapping borehole-accessed karst solution cavities and by the Federal Highway Administration for mapping, monitoring, and diagnosing damage to roadway culverts. The first variation is tethered to map karst voids intersected by a drill hole but where discharge to a spring is not anticipated. The second features an enhanced sonar scheme to overcome the extreme multipath environments found inside a partially filled metal culvert and to provide localization information in a magnetically shielded environment.

Prediction, assessment, and mitigation of surface-affecting natural hazard processes such as landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, and floods call upon geoscientists to rapidly deploy instruments and accurately characterize these earth processes, often with little lead time and under dangerous working conditions. Affected areas may have heavy tree canopies, or high atmospheric dust loads (volcanic eruptions), precluding the use of traditional location techniques like Global Positioning System (GPS). The proliferation of inexpensive radio systems provides a technology that has the potential to redefine the approach to rapid characterization of hazardous earth processes. The research effort described in this paper developed and demonstrated an inexpensive, cooperative radar-like technology for precise distance measurement between intelligent radio nodes. ©2009 IEEE.

Network-centric architectures continue to gain acceptance in data acquisition and telemetry systems. Though networks by nature impose non-deterministic transit time of data through a given link, the IEEE 1588 standard provides a means to remove this jitter by distributing time messages to the data acquisition units themselves. But like all standards, they evolve over time. The same is true with IEEE 1588, which is releasing its second version later this year. This paper discusses the challenges of the first version of the IEEE 1588 standard that Version 2 set out to address, potential challenges with Version 2, and interoperability issues that may arise when incorporating a mixture of Version 1 and Version 2 devices. © International Foundation for Telemetering, 2008.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been actively involved in IntelligentTransportation systems (ITS) at a statewide level since 1998. Key to the TxDOT ITS StatewideDevelopment and Integration (SDI) Program has been the concept of develop once and reusemany times. Benefits of the Texas SDI program have extended to the 25 districts in the statewhich include both metropolitan and rural deployments and several of the largest cities in theUnited States. ITS applications include traditional traffic management centers as well as bordersafety inspection facilities. The program has had to deal both with new development anddeployment as well as integration into existing deployments with legacy equipment and migrationissues. Software has been licensed for use by other state departments of transportation andsuccessfully built upon. Through reciprocal licenses, TxDOT has been able to take advantage ofadditional capability developed. An overview of the program and its accomplishments will be given.

When network-centric flight test system components are developed concurrently, it is necessary to produce relevant simulated network traffic for exercising the network devices and other processing subsystems prior to system integration. Having an accurate and repeatable pattern of simulated network traffic is extremely important for debugging and subsystem integration. The simulated network traffic must be both representative of the real system and repeatable to aid test efforts. Our solution to this problem was to develop a model-driven network traffic generator - NETGEN. Using NETGEN to resolve errors, stress test, and verify requirements, we have achieved otherwise unattainable correctness, reliability, and success in our systems. © International Foundation for Telemetering, 2007.

Ubiquitous internet protocol (IP) hardware has reached performance and capability levels that allow its use in data collection and real-time processing applications. Recent development experience with IP-based airborne data acquisition systems has shown that the open, pre-existing IP tools, standards, and capabilities support this form of distribution and sharing of data quite nicely, especially when combined with IP multicast. Unfortunately, the packet based nature of our approach also posed some problems that required special handling to achieve performance requirements. We have developed methods and algorithms for the filtering, selecting, and retiming problems associated with packet-based systems and present our approach in this paper. © International Foundation for Telemetering, 2007.

The growth of the Internet and the resulting increasing speeds and decreasing prices of network equipment have spurred much interest in applying networks to flight test applications. However, the best-effort, variable-latency nature of network transport causes challenges that must be addressed to provide reliable data acquisition and timing performance. This paper describes the major issues that must be addressed when designing and implementing real-time networking applications. An overview of a recently implemented large-scale, network-centric data acquisition, recording, and telemetry system for commercial flight test applications provides a real-world example of what is currently achievable. © International Foundation for Telemetering, 2007.
