In this paper, design of Takagi-Sugeno controllers for a twin-rotor system from empirical data is addressed. First, identification of linear models using Prediction Error Method in the presence of nonlinear distortions and in feedback systems is revisited, and it is demonstrated that feedback nonlinear systems with an integral action can be locally represented by linear models rather than affine models. Moreover, it is demonstrated that how the consistency and unbiasedness of the identified models can be improved by proper design of the experiments. In order to ensure that the unmodeled contributions in the resulting piecewise linear model are sufficiently small, a criterion is proposed based on the small-gain theorem that can be used for unfalsification of the piecewise linear model. Finally, by taking advantage of the separation principle, design of fuzzy Takag-Sugeno state feedback and observer is formulated in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). The implementation results on the actual system demonstrate significant improvements with respect to the initial controller and previous work on similar systems.

In this paper,the output feedback control problem for a genetic hypersonic vehicle is considered under the restriction that only the vehicle’s velocity and altitude are measurable. High gain observers (HGO) are utilized to provide estimation signals for unmeasurable derivatives of the vehicle’s velocity and altitude. Neural network based feedforward function is designed to compensate for model uncertainties. The proposed control design require less knowledge of the hypersonic vehicle’s dynamic model. A comprehensive stability analysis of the closed loop system under the output feedback control is carried to prove that the proposed control law yields semiglobal uniformly ultimately bounded tracking while keeping all the closed loop signals bounded. Numerical simulation results are presented to validate the proposed control design.

Improving copper matte grade control in a concentrate flash furnace

The copper matte grade (CMG) variation in a flash furnace depends on bath temperature, phase levels, ratio of oxygen to sulfur, iron and copper content on the feed, and tonnage ratio of silica flux and feed, among others. The CMG is obtained from laboratory analysis of samples taken when the matte is tapped out from the furnace. Then the CMG is known with a time delay of 1–2 hours, almost every one hour. Since feed characteristics usually change during this period, any feedback control of CMG cannot reduce enough the grade variability. On the other hand, it was shown that main disturbances are coming with the composite feed tonnage and composition, being the powder tonnage control system the main contribution. A new calibration system was proposed and implemented. During an evaluation period of 60 days, it was found that the standard deviation of the CMG was reduced in 25%. This improvement can be explained considering two effects. First, the stabilization of the total feed tonnage that affect the mass balance in the furnace. Second, even when the powder tonnage is only 7% of the total tonnage, its special chemical composition contributed to increase the copper content in the matte. The stabilization of the furnace operation also improved the phase separation, as well as reduced the variance of the gas SO 2 composition and flow rate. The operators took advantage of this reduced variability to increase the fusion rate and thus the mean generated gas flow rate in the furnace, without violating the plant constraints. One important conclusion is that this result will permit to increase the average value of CMG, when the development of the virtual sensor of feed composition is completed and when this estimation becomes part of a FF-FB control.

This paper addresses the output regulation problem for switched linear systems. When each regulation equation has their own solution, we give a sufficient condition for the output regulation problem to be solvable. Firstly, we give the regulation equations of switched linear systems and the relation of the transformed states between two consecutive switching times. Secondly, the existence of a minimal average dwell-time for every switching sequence is assumed, and by virtue of an appropriate Lyapunov analysis, the output regulation is achieved. Our result is of much less conservativeness.

This paper deals with the problem of guaranteed cost control for a class of switched systems with affine vector fields by using multiple Lyapunov function method. The multiple Lyapunov function (MLF) is constructed from a set of auxiliary function having quadratic and linear terms for each subsystem of the switched systems. By using such an MLF, a switching rule is determined to enforce the state of the switched systems to a desired equilibrium point and make a guaranteed cost performance hold. Sufficient conditions for the existence of such a switching rule are also given in form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally,the method is applied to a boost converter. © 2012 ISSN 2185-2766.

This study presents an image-based on-line control system for a coiled pipe flocculator. A digital imaging technique developed previously is utilized to measure the characteristic floc size and a high-pressure piezo-dispenser is introduced for accurate dosing and rapid mixing of the flocculant. The controller is a conventional PI controller. Step change experiments on feed water quality, flow rate and desired floc size have been carried out for controller tuning and testing. The paper shows that the piezo-dispenser provides better flocculation results than a conventional dosing pump, and the flocculation result can be automatically controlled even when the feed water quality rapidly changes. The proposed flocculator is a simple, inexpensive and practical system for long-term laboratory tests to investigate the functionality of flocculants on varying feed *** © 2012 IFSA.

With increasing research on the field of alternative energy resources for sustainable development, more renewable energy sources are getting penetrated to the distributed network to form “microgrid”. This leads to more complexity in the distribution network in terms of energy management and realtime control. The objective of this paper is to design a system that forecasts the short (daily), medium (seasonal) and long term (yearly) load demand and the availability of energy resources at the microgrids. For scheduling the storage and transaction of electrical energy between neighboring microgrids, an energy management system (EMS) is designed. The EMS makes use of the forecasted data and real time data all together for managing an array of interconnected microgrids. The seasonal and yearly forecaster for a geographical boundary helps in maintenance scheduling and long term infrastructure development plan respectively. Recently, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is found as a promising tool for statistical forecasting in real time applications. Hence, this paper makes use of ANN feature to forecast both load and availability of energy resources at microgrids in different scenarios like daily, seasonal, and yearly. The layered ANNs architecture is developed and trained with Levenberg-Marqurardt Back Propagation Algorithm. The entire design is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink. The proposed concept can be used in today's real time energy infrastructure to prevent future energy crises with improved reliability and smooth coordination among microgrids located at different areas.

For a class of uncertain multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) discrete-time nonlinear systems with strong coupling and unstable zero-dynamics, an adaptive generalized predictive decoupling switching control method based on unmodeled dynamic compensation is proposed. It is only required that the higher order nonlinear terms of the system to satisfy a linear growth condition, rather than the global boundedness condition widely used. The analysis of stability and convergence of the adaptive control method are performed. Moreover, in designing the nonlinear generalized predictive decoupling controller, we combine the adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) training with the "one-toone mapping" technique to adaptively estimate the unmodeled dynamics, so that the universal approximation property of ANFIS can be guaranteed. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method and validate the theoretical analysis.

The number of model-based approaches in modern engine control units (ECUs) increases permanently with the increase of engine complexity. Therefore the efficient storage and the fast computation of these models is a challenging task. Due to their fast computation properties most ECUs utilize 2-dimensional grid map structures. Higher dimensional relations need then to be mapped with nested structures of several 2-dimensional grid maps. The determination of suited structures is a time-consuming task and the number of utilized 2-dimensional grid maps may be large for higher dimensional relations. Therefore in the following a grid map structure, a LOLIMOT structure, a Kernel method and an adaptive polynomial approach are compared with respect to model accuracy, computation time and required memory. Conclusions about the implementation on state of the art ECUs are given. As model output the NOx emissions of a DTH Z19 Opel CR-Diesel engine with VGT-turbocharger and exhaust gas recirculation are regarded. Model structures are presented for a global model approach comprising the engine operation point as input, and for a global-local approach predicting the output by weighting local models. © 2011 IFAC.
