Most plants are nonlinear in practice, the proper T-S fuzzy model is obtained by a recursive fuzzy identification method to describe the real complex nonlinear systems. First, a fuzzy-clustering algorithm is used to competitively learn the centers of the input-areas online. Second, the radii of input areas are determined based on the superposed degree of the predetermined rules, while the parameters in the inference can be achieved by the RLS algorithm, then the fuzzy local linear model can be used as the CARIMA model at every instant to predict the output of the plant. Finally, a tuning algorithm for PID controller parameters is presented based on the idea of generalized predictive control (GPC) and the relation between the GPC and PID controller. The optimal index includes the weighting term of the square of error between the predicted process steady-state value and the desired-state value. The stability of the system has also been studied. The simulation results both in theory and a paper pulp process show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The design of current and speed controllers remains to a large extent a mystery to many engineers in the motor drives field. An attempt is made in this paper to simplify the design of the current and speed controllers using Bode plots. This paper outlines the theoretical background behind the techniques of symmetric optimum and dominant time constant compensation methods. The techniques are compared and contrasted using the overshoot and phase margin criteria. An application of these techniques to controller design for permanent magnet brushless DC motor (PMBDCM) drive system is made and verified with simulation. In order to apply these techniques to PMBDCM drive for the design of the current and speed controllers, the model of the motor drive is given for the benefit of the reader. The current and speed controller synthesis of a PMBDCM drive is achieved with the presented technique. Simulation results demonstrate for reference (current or speed) changes, symmetric optimum and dominant time compensation methods perform similarly. But for a load torque disturbance, the adverse effect on the speed is compensated faster only with the symmetric optimum method.

The main contribution of this work is the development of a Matlab/Simulink-based software environment that allows the integrated simulation, validation and fast prototyping of real-time control algorithms for induction machines. The transition from the simulation phase to the real-time prototyping is straightforward. A single modification by the user is required to perform the substitution of simulation tools by real-time tools. The algorithm developed is kept in the environment during the whole design process. Real-time tools will read sensors signals and send control signals for the drivers. Practical results were obtained and are hereby presented in order to illustrate the use and the characteristics of the platform. The use of flux estimators and current control was also exemplified in simulation and real-time implementation in such way that all the potentiality of the developed platform could be demonstrated.

This paper presents a laboratory testing of genetic algorithm (GA) based self-tuned PI controller for the speed control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). A radial basis artificial neural network function is used for on-line tuning of the PI controller. GA has been used in this work in order to obtain the optimized values of the PI constants for precise speed control. An performance index has been developed using GA, whose minimum value ensures zero steady-state error, minimum speed deviation and minimum settling time of the IPMSM drive. The initial values of the radial basis function network (RBFN) are obtained through off-line learning. Training data for off-line learning are generated by simulating the IPMSM drive under various operating conditions and uncertainties. For on-line implementation, the PI constants are tuned by updating the parameters of the RBFN maintaining the genetic performance index at its minimum value. In real time implementation, the proposed controller has been realized using a digital signal processor (DSP) board DS1102 for a 1hp laboratory IPMSM. The control algorithm is written in C++, compiled and then down loaded to the DSP board. The agreement between the simulation and test results confirms the effectiveness of the proposed controller for the vector control of the IPMSM.

The feedback control structures are required in the presence of any kind of uncertainty. The benefits of the feedback are mainly paid with an excessive bandwidth that amplifies the sensor noise, saturating the actuators. This implies the necessity of design tradeoffs highly transparent from the Quantitative Feedback Theory. Supposing a given uncertainty for a plant, the set of performance and stability requirements will condition the problem solution. Taking advantage of the QFT bound typology and formulation, the contribution of the robust specification values to their simultaneous achievement will be analysed and particularly as regards the challenging task of the controller design.

In this paper, the problem of system decomposition of complex linear dynamical systems, by exploiting the similarity property, is studied. System decompositions were sought in terms of similarity hierarchical structures. Three new theoretical results were proved. A method for constructing the transformation has been derived. The conditions for such decomposition of complex linear systems are given.

In this paper, several relations between pole placement (PP) controller and unconstrained predictive controller are investigated. The placement of poles at certain positions leads to various types of time optimal control and has a direct relation to the choice of minimum control and output horizons for stabilising MPC. On the other hand, a predictive control method for linear systems is derived that can be turned into some well known stabilising MPC methods. This MPC method is closely related to the PP design.

Internal thermally coupled distillation column(ITCDIC) is a frontier in energy saving distillation research. In this paper, the optimal assessment on the energy saving and the operating cost for ITCDIC of nonideal mixture is explored. An evaluating method is proposed, and the pertinent optimization model is then derived. The ethanol-water system is studied as an illustrative example. The optimization results show that the maximum energy saving in ITCDIC process is about 35% and the maximum operating cost saving in ITCDIC process is about 30%,as compared with a conventional distillation column(CDIC) under the minimum reflux ratio operating; the optimal operating pressure of the rectifying section is found to be around 0.25 MPa; the effects of the feed composition,operating pressure and the heat transfer rate on operation are also found and analyzed. It is revealed that ITCDIC process possesses high energy saving potential and promising economical prospect.

In the present paper, we described the system architecture of the autonomous mobile robot B21 from RWI focussing on the double control loop implementing the kinematic control together with the underlying drive control. As a highly accurate drive control is taken for granted only the kinematic model is considered for trajectory and position control. In order to manage successfully demanding tasks in dynamic environments, a motion strategy combining trajectory control and position control is suggested. Two different examples where this combination is required are shown. When a self-localization error occurs, the starting point of the reference trajectory is far away from the actual position of the mobile robot. In such a case, to avoid re-planning a motion control strategy is implemented such that the robot finds again the starting point of the reference trajectory without crossing large parts of the unknown environment. When an unexpected obstacle appears on the planned path a collision avoidance manoeuvre is initiated. This manoeuvre also combines trajectory control and position control. Experimental results for both cases show the performance of the presented motion strategies. The used trajectory and position controllers are described. © 2001 EUCA.
