Fuzzy systems have been proved to be universal approximators, yet a large number of fuzzy rules may be needed for high approximation accuracy. In this paper, we consider how to determine the minimum number of fuzzy rules required in a fuzzy system for approximation to achieve a given accuracy and how to construct this fuzzy system when there are only a limited number of input-output data pairs of the unknown system. The key point is to partition the input space nonuniformly. In particular, a tunnel algorithm is utilized for the single-input case. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the proposed idea and algorithm.

This article addresses parameter convergence problem in identification of nonlinear dynamic systems using fuzzy models. We first establish persistent excitation conditions and then propose several detailed algorithms to generate input signals that guarantee the convergence of the parameter estimates in the fuzzy system models to the true values in identifications of second-order nonlinear moving-average and auto-regressive-moving-average systems. Numerical example is given to illustrate the ideas and results.

In this paper PI and PID controllers augmented by a Smith predictor structure are compared to ordinary PI and PID controllers, for plants with medium and great time delays. The comparison is based an a systematic evaluation method, where both robustness and performance aspects in different frequency regions are taken into account. The results show that a Smith predictor increases performance somewhat for a PID controller when the time delay is moderate. For great time delays, however, the improvement is insignificant. An important remark is that it is necessary to include the predictor structure in the design to get acceptable robustness properties. For a PI controller the benefits from a predictor are mostly small or negligible independent of time delay. Most important is, however that a derivative part obviously will bring significantly greater improvement than a Smith predictor to a system with a PI controller. This result is somewhat surprising, since Smith predictors are normally used together with PI and not with PID controllers. Furthermore, it is sometimes argued that it is no use to include derivative action for plants with significant time delay.

A one-step-ahead adaptive control scheme based on fuzzy models is presented for a class of nonlinear dynamic systems which have no restriction on the structure. The specific features of the fuzzy systems are taken into consideration. The proposed method has the following properties: 1) by properly designing the fuzzy system, the modeling error converges to an error band which can be made arbitrarily small; and 2) with mild assumptions, the tracking error of the closed-loop system is guaranteed within an /spl epsiv/-neighborhood of zero and the stability is ensured. Tests on the data from a real steel-heating furnace are given to show the effectiveness of the scheme.

In this paper, the authors present a new approach to visual feedback control using image-based visual servoing with stereo vision. In order to control the position and orientation of a robot with respect to an object, a new technique is proposed using a binocular stereo vision. The stereo vision enables one to calculate an exact image Jacobian not only at around a desired location, but also at the other locations. The suggested technique can guide a robot manipulator to the desired location without giving such priori knowledge as the relative distance to the desired location or the model of an object, even if the initial positioning error is large. This paper describes a model of stereo vision and how to generate feedback commands. The performance of the proposed visual servoing system is illustrated by the simulation and experimental results and compared with the case of conventional method for an assembling robot.

This work considers recent theoretical results for dynamical systems distributed in one spatial dimension. An application is presented for an industrial papermaking control system that had been experiencing frequent closed-loop instability problems. Two-dimensional frequency domain analysis uncovered a very small robust stability margin in the region corresponding to qualitative observations of the instability. A two-dimensional loop shaping technique was then used to redesign the feedback controller to obtain a closed-loop system with an acceptable stability margin. The system was observed to remain stable over the course of four days of closed-loop operation.

On-line nuclear meters have been in use in the coal industry for many years. They have been utilised for coal quality monitoring, in the control systems for coal blending, or for separating coals in the heavy media separation process. Their operation is based on the scattering or the absorption of incident gamma radiation, and the derived density or ash value is the result of a time-averaged measurement. In this paper, dynamic models of ash monitors have been presented and discussed. The analysis of monitors with constant measurement time shows that it is possible to determine optimal time for which the dynamic error is the smallest. The analysis also shows that the best results are given by the monitors in which the measurement time is variable and adap to changes of the input signal. The fuzzy logic has been applied to control ash monitor operation. An example of a coal blending control system which stabilises coal quality of the blend with the use of the fuzzy ash monitor has been analysed.
