Friction appears in the bearings and reduction gear of controlled electrical drives and affects the quality of the position, speed or force control. The servosystem performance can be improved by implementation of acceleration feedback. For the reason that acceleration measurement is often either not possible or practical, the implementation of acceleration estimation by an observer or differentiation of speed is proposed. Another approach to friction influence compensation is based on the disturbance observer. Its advantage is that it can be applied generally to the estimation of various disturbances. This paper deals with these friction compensation methods which are not based on friction model, but on the compensation of friction as a disturbance. The efficiency of these methods in a servodrive with Stribeck friction is compared by computer simulation and experimentally on a servosystem laboratory model.

A fault detection and isolation scheme for a brushless DC motor driving a mechanical actuation system is presented. First, a detailed mathematical model of the drive is derived. The residual generator is based on parity relations while the fault isolation part is implemented by means of the transferable belief model. The problem of distinguishing between faults with the same fault signatures is addressed. It is shown that additional improvements in terms of resolution can be achieved by employing parameter estimation. The proposed FDI scheme is tested on the actual drive under various faults. The achieved performance features the highest resolution, diagnostic stability and accuracy.

This paper describes an Internet-based learning environment, which uses a standard Web-browser as the user interface. The browser's capabilities are extended to provide a link to CACSD tools to perform symbol and numerical computations and simulations. The use of object-oriented paradigms in the design of the data structure leads to high flexibility, easy maintenance and short download times. The system is based on Web components which integrate the MATLAB/Simulink/MAPLE V system for calculations in the background. The CACSD tools are completely hidden from the learner who can concentrate on the tutorial, exercises and experiments. The latter are realised in an integrated virtual laboratory, where virtual reality techniques are used to animate virtual laboratory plants and to interact with them.

In the chemical industry, the growing demand for efficient, economic and just-in-time production of goods with constant high quality leads to the goal of complete automation of a company's production processes. This can only be achieved, if the information flow between the various IT systems in the company work without problems. There are IT solutions in the chemical industry providing a complete informational integration by coupling processcontrol systems (PCS) supporting recipe based control to plant management systems (PMS) like SAP R/3 (using the module PP/PI). However, not all PCS support recipe based control as it is not necessary for a lot of processes. Hence, it is necessary to find a means that integrates these less complex systems. The paper presents an approach to the coupling of PCS with varying functionality to SAP R/3. The proposed solution employs a relational database as middleware between PCS and PMS. The information flow for three different basic coupling scenarios (PCS with recipe management, PCS with sequential function charts, and PCS with only measurement and control objects) is examined and the pros and cons of the three scenarios are discussed.

An approach of uncertain model-based robust guaranteed stability control for stock refining is proposed. A synthetic performance index of optimal control for stock refining with large uncertainties is considered. A modified robust return difference equality is derived. Sufficient conditions to guarantee robust stability and guaranteed stability margins for uncertain systems are presented by solving a resulting robust algebraic matrix inequality including uncertainties. Furthermore, a synthetic design procedure of robust guaranteed stability control system for stock refining is developed. Simulation test results are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

This paper describes B-spline interpolation and compares it with other reconstruction methods, especially in three-dimensional space. We first consider the B-spline bases in the terms of convolution in signal processing. The presented analysis requires careful usage of continuous and discrete representation of B-spline. Emphasis is given to the important difference between B-spline interpolation and approximation. The difference is shown through frequency domain analysis, so we derive frequency responses of the B-spline interpolation and approximation. We conclude by demonstrating the use of several reconstruction filters and appropriate gradient estimators in volume rendering. Exact reconstruction in volume visualization is very important in many industrial applications, such as material cavity control.

Based on a lower bound stability measure for sampled-data controller structures subject to finite-word-length (FWL) constraints, the optimal realization of the digital PID controller with FWL considerations is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem. An efficient strategy based on adaptive simulated annealing is adopted to solve this complex optimization problem. A numerical example of optimizing the finite-precision PID controller for a steel rolling mill system is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The volume data is generally in the form of the large array of numbers. In order to render the object hidden in the volumetric data, we need to reconstruct or interpolate data values between the samples. The novelty presented in this paper is B-spline interpolation in the volumetric space. We show that this approach is better than currently used methods. We also present a hybrid approach, analyze this approach in frequency domain and compare it to B-spline interpolation. To enhance the quality during the volume visualization process it is important to enhance the quality of the reconstruction. It is of crucial importance to explore different undesired effects. If better reconstruction is performed the more accurate result of volume visualization process is achieved.
