The electrification of offshore oil and gas platforms (OOGPs), using offshore wind turbines, is now a reality, aimed at minimizing carbon emissions. In this scenario, the utilization of battery energy storage systems (BESS) improves both efficiency and power quality. As this integration comes with a high CAPEX, industries demand exploring BESS for multiple ancillary services on OOGPs. Thus, this paper proposes an alternative approach to energizing a power transformer (PT) using the BESS power conversion system (PCS) on the platform, aiming to minimize inrush currents. This avoids the necessity for additional bulky devices, converters, or dc voltage sources specifically designated for this purpose. The strategy consists of manipulating residual core flux using BESS PCS followed by a controlled switching, which reduces inrush currents during PT energization. The results show effective reduction of the inrush current from 2.31 pu to 0.16 pu for the presented case study.

A Labeled Ophthalmic Ultrasound Dataset with Medical Report Generation Based on Cross-modal Deep Learning

Ultrasound imaging reveals eye morphology and aids in diagnosing and treating eye diseases. However, interpreting diagnostic reports requires specialized physicians. We present a labeled ophthalmic dataset for the precise analysis and the automated exploration of medical images along with their associated reports. It collects three modal data, including the ultrasound images, blood flow information and examination reports from 2,417 patients at an ophthalmology hospital in Shenyang, China, during the year 2018, in which the patient information is de-identified for privacy protection. To the best of our knowledge, it is the only ophthalmic dataset that contains the three modal information simultaneously. It incrementally consists of 4,858 images with the corresponding free-text reports, which describe 15 typical imaging findings of intraocular diseases and the corresponding anatomical locations. Each image shows three kinds of blood flow indices at three specific arteries, i.e., nine parameter values to describe the spectral characteristics of blood flow distribution. The reports were written by ophthalmologists during the clinical care. The proposed dataset is applied to generate medical report based on the cross-modal deep learning model. The experimental results demonstrate that our dataset is suitable for training supervised models concerning cross-modal medical data. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we study unconstrained distributed optimization strongly convex problems, in which the exchange of information in the network is captured by a directed graph topology over digital channels that have limited capacity (and hence information should be quantized). Distributed methods in which nodes use quantized communication yield a solution at the proximity of the optimal solution, hence reaching an error floor that depends on the quantization level used;the finer the quantization the lower the error floor. However, it is not possible to determine in advance the optimal quantization level that ensures specific performance guarantees (such as achieving an error floor below a predefined threshold). Choosing a very small quantization level that would guarantee the desired performance, requires information packets of very large size, which is not desirable (could increase the probability of packet losses, increase delays, etc) and often not feasible due to the limited capacity of the channels available. In order to obtain a communication-efficient distributed solution and a sufficiently close proximity to the optimal solution, we propose a quantized distributed optimization algorithm that converges in a finite number of steps and is able to adjust the quantization level accordingly. The proposed solution uses a finite-time distributed optimization protocol to find a solution to the problem for a given quantization level in a finite number of steps and keeps refining the quantization level until the difference in the solution between two successive solutions with different quantization levels is below a certain pre-specified threshold. Therefore, the proposed algorithm progressively refines the quantization level, thus eventually achieving low error floor with a reduced communication burden. In this paper, a deep residual network based on convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is proposed, which is utilized for feature extraction of partially occluded face expression data. The proposed method overcomes the problem of localized occlusion face feature extraction by focusing on the regions and channels containing important information in the occluded face data through CBAM. Multi-task cascaded convolutional networks (MTCNN) are firstly utilized to localize the key regions of face emotion, and then deep emotion features are extracted by CBAM-ResNet network. The final emotion labels are generated. The effectiveness of this paper's method is verified on the RAF-DB dataset and the occluded CK+ dataset. The experimental accuracy in the RAF-DB dataset is 76.3%, which is 3.74% and 1.64% higher than the accuracy produced by the method of RGBT, and the WLS-RF, respectively. Application experiments are carried out in the real teaching scenario, which verifies the applicability of the algorithm in the real teaching scene. © 2023 IEEE.

The complex permeability of magnetic cores acts as a vital factor in electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering choke design and optimization. Many efforts have been reported for toroid cores, but fewer target those with other shapes, such as EE, EI, UU, and UI cores. Owing to their commonly used in planar EMI filters, determining the complex permeability of them is of significance. Targeting EE cores, this paper presents a flexible printed circuit board (PCB)-based fixture adapter tailored designed for performing the measurement, while the corresponding core permeability can be calculated through magnetic flux path length analysis. The experiments validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed methods, spanning a wide frequency range up to 120 MHz.

Root cause diagnosis (RCD) is an important technique for maintaining the safe operation of industrial processes. Traditional RCD methods usually require stationarity assumptions. However, the process inevitably shows nonstationarity due to factors such as switching of operating conditions. Although there have been some previous studies trying to overcome the challenge of nonstationarity, these methods fail to guarantee the significance of the extracted causalities and lead to redundant relationships. To address the above issues, a sparse causal analysis model with time-varying parameters is extracted in this study. First, we propose an end-to-end information fusion and prediction task to characterize predictive relationships between variables and avoid repeated modeling. Second, we design time-varying parameters for the information fusion mechanism to cope with nonstationarity and automatically identify significant causality through sparse parameter updates. We design an update strategy that constrains the gradient information to guarantee sparsity. Finally, a causal metric is constructed for the time-varying predictive relationship to comprehensively obtain the overall causal relationship, which further guarantees causal significance. The validity of the proposed method is illustrated through a real industrial example collected from a thermal power plant. © 2022 IEEE.

A Study on Citation Impact with Age Diversity between Disciplines

With the ongoing evolution of scientific research collaboration in depth and breadth, the age distribution among paper collaborators is becoming increasingly varied. Consequently, the question of whether this age distribution affects the quality of collaborative papers has emerged as a significant topic in recent research. In this study, we have compiled and established a comprehensive scientific database, comprising more than 3.5 million papers. These papers, featuring multiple attribute information, originate from over 180 countries. We define the age diversity of a paper based on the academic ages of its co-authors and examine the relationship between age diversity and citation impact using regression analyses. Our findings reveal a clear upward trend in the age diversity of authors over time. The results indicate that the average age diversity of highly cited papers is consistently higher than that of general papers across the entire timeline, spanning four disciplines: economics, engineering, computer science, and physics. Moreover, we demonstrate a significantly positive correlation between age diversity and citation impact. In the aforementioned four disciplines, an increase in the collaborators’ age diversity is associated with a corresponding rise in the paper’s citation impact. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of age-related dynamics in scientific collaboration. It also offers insights into the age distribution of teams, providing practical suggestions for researchers engaged in collaborative endeavors. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Eye diseases will have a very serious impact on the life, study and work of patients. In order to better assist doctors in their work, it is very meaningful to use deep learning neural networks for medical image analysis and auxiliary medical diagnosis. In this paper, we use deep neural network AlexNet combined with Adam optimization algorithm to classify images of four common eye diseases: vitreous opacity, vitreous opacity with retinal detachment, asteroid hyalosis and vitreous hemorrhage. Use confusion matrix, accuracy, precision, recall, specificity and other evaluation indicators to evaluate its classification effect. The application results of the above methods on ophthalmic ultrasound images from actual hospitals show that AlexNet has high classification accuracy for actual ultrasound pattern, and can be used to assist doctors in ophthalmic disease diagnosis. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel trapezoidal Halbach permanent magnet array is introduced to lessen the output torque ripple of a surface-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). Finite Element Method (FEM), core loss, output torque, and torque ripple are examined. The harmonic components of the trapezoidal Halbach magnet arrays are analyzed by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Additionally, a traditional trapezoidal Halbach magnet array-based 2D finite element model of the PMSM is also developed. The findings demonstrate the improved trapezoidal Halbach magnet array's capability to reduce the PMSM's torque ripple by lowering the intensity of the third harmonic of the air-gap flux density. In contrast to the PMSM employing traditional trapezoidal Halbach magnet arrays, the PMSM with the introduced trapezoidal Halbach arrays has a lower torque ripple by 11.84 % and a higher torque by 18.03%, while maintaining similar core loss. © 2022 IEEE.

Effective battery management is critical for the performance and lifespan of smart electric vehicle (EV) systems. Therefore, reducing battery discharge is key to improving the range of EVs. This paper proposes an adaptive model predictive control (AMPC) strategy for optimizing battery discharge of EVs. Specifically, AMPC autonomously controls the smart EV by managing the lateral position, yaw angle, and PMSM to provide the required traction torque at the desired speed. The strategy updates the operating points of the predictive model at each time step to accurately represent the nonlinear plant across different speed regions, using vehicle linear velocity and stator currents. Meanwhile, the stator inductances and induced motor torque are estimated via a third order generalized integrator. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the AMPC significantly reduces battery discharge current, watt-hour per kilometer, capacity rate, and parallel cell units. Meanwhile, the AMPC improves lane-keeping assistance in the electric power steering system and ensures precise tracking of speed and torque. A finite element method parameterized PMSM simulation model enhances motor capture. Consequently, AMPC shows superior performance in vehicle dynamics and PMSM control compared to the classic MPC approach. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
