Feedback Optimization of Nonlinear Strict-Feedback Systems

Feedback optimization aims at regulating the output of a dynamical system to a value that minimizes a cost function. This problem is beyond the reach of the traditional output regulation theory, because the desired value is generally unknown and the reference signal evolves according to a gradient flow using the system's real-time output. This paper complements the output regulation theory with the nonlinear small-gain theory to address this challenge. Specifically, the authors assume that the cost function is strongly convex and the nonlinear dynamical system is in lower triangular form and is subject to parametric uncertainties and a class of external disturbances. An internal model is used to compensate for the effects of the disturbances while the cyclic small-gain theorem is invoked to address the coupling between the reference signal, the compensators, and the physical system. The proposed solution can guarantee the boundedness of the closed-loop signals and regulate the output of the system towards the desired minimizer in a global sense. Two numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper studies the problem of robust H∞ active fault-tolerant tracking control for multi-agent systems (MASs) under nonideal communication links and external disturbances. Unlike most existing studies that assume idealized or simplified communication links, such as uniform constant or time-varying delays, this paper considers a more realistic communication scenario involving non-uniform time-varying communication delays. The communication cases discussed encompass existing common communication scenarios as special cases. To achieve active fault-tolerant control, an intermediate variable-assisted proportional-integral observer (PIO) is introduced to estimate the system’s state and faults. Based on fault estimation values and considering non-ideal communication constraints, a fault-tolerant control scheme is designed to achieve the leader-follower tracking control objectives. With the help of Lyapunov theory and matrix inequality method, sufficient criteria are proposed for co-designing the observer and controller gains. Finally, two simulation examples verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Multi-Orbit Circumnavigation Control of UAVs With Arbitrary Angular Spacing in Three-Dimensional Space

In this paper, a novel multi-orbit circumnavigation control law is proposed for a group of UAVs with arbitrary angular spacing based on local information. By constructing the actual relative velocity and the ideal relative velocity in three dimensional space, the circumnavigation control problem of moving target is first transformed into a relative velocity tracking problem. Further, to remove the limitation that the UAVs require the global information of the moving target, the corresponding fixed-time convergent estimators with the cyclic directed graph are developed. Based on these distributed estimators and relative kinematics equations, the dynamic linear feedback is introduced to derive the distributed control law. At the same time, the angular spacing update law and the circumnavigation radius coefficient are designed, so that the UAVs can circumnavigate on multi-orbit with any angular spacing. Finally, the exponential stability of the control law is proved by Lyapunov method, and the effectiveness of the control law is verified by five examples. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper proposes a robust integrated fault estimation (FE) and fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy for a class of continuous-time switched systems in the presence of unknown external disturbances and sensor faults. The main idea focuses on designing a switched descriptor observer to achieve simultaneous estimations of system states and sensor faults. With the acquired estimation information, an integrated development of the estimated state feedback fault-tolerant controller is constructed to compensate for the fault effects by stabilizing the switched closed-loop system. Based on the average dwell time (ADT) concept and the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method, new and less conservative stability conditions are established with a prescribed H∞ performance level in a single-step linear matrix inequality (LMI) formulation. Finally, both a numerical example and a highly maneuverable aircraft technology (HiMAT) vehicle are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed strategy. Copyright © 2025 by ASME.

Design of a Vernier effect assisted optical fiber WGM microbottle for a highly sensitive temperature measurement

In this paper, a sensing scheme that produces the Vernier effect in a single microbottle cavity based on whispering gallery mode (WGM) is proposed for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The WGMs circulating in a polydimethylsiloxane microbottle are excited by a coupler composed of a single-mode fiber (SMF)-no-core fiber-SMF staggered structure. Due to the characteristics of the coupler with fewer high-order modes and the microbottle with adjustable excitation modes, few-mode resonances with similar free spectral range are excited in a single microbottle, which are superimposed to form a Vernier envelope. The experimental results show that in the range of 25°C-95°C, the Vernier envelope successfully improves the temperature sensitivity to ∼297 pm/°C, which is 6.7 times that of a WGM resonance dip. The proposed sensor has the advantages of simple fabrication and high reward and has great prospects in wide-range and highly sensitive temperature measurement applications. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group.

Dual-Protection Method Against Eavesdroppers for Distributed State Estimation

This paper examines a security issue for state estimation over a wireless sensor network. The state estimates are transmitted among neighboring nodes through wireless channels in a distributed network, wherein the transmission of the data are vulnerable to the intercept from eavesdroppers, leading to important data privacy leakage. To prevent eavesdroppers from obtaining state estimates, we propose a dual-protection method that combines dynamic transformation with lightweight encryption, which aims to protect the privacy without raising suspicion from eavesdroppers. Furthermore, we consider the scenarios where eavesdroppers utilize side-channel information to gather data and attempt to deduce the encryption mechanism, subsequently inferring the real state estimate. We also provide the analysis to show that the eavesdropper with inference capabilities could not influence the estimation performance of sensors. Finally, the numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the privacy-preserving method. © 2015 IEEE.

High-Sensitivity and External RI-Independent Mode-Selective Michelson Interferometer Using a Single-Ended Helical Graded-Index Fiber

We have theoretically and experimentally proposed and demonstrated an all-in-fiber-core mode-selective Michelson interferometer (MS-MI) sensor utilizing a single-ended helical graded-index few-mode fiber (SE-HGIFMF). The SE-HGIFMF effectively eliminates multi-mode interference, remains insensitive to external refractive index (RI) variations, and significantly enhances sensing sensitivity due to the minimal disparity in group RI between the two guided core modes. We investigated the torsion, strain, and temperature characteristics of the sensor, achieving sensitivities of 1.785 nm/(rad/m) for directional torsion, 0.0316 nm/μϵ for strain, and 0.624 nm/°C for temperature. These sensitivities are competitive within the fiber optic sensor family and represent the highest values reported for mode-selective MI and Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensors to our knowledge. The proposed sensor not only demonstrates exceptional sensitivity but also offers directionality identification for torsion, ease of use, flexible installation, low loss, and high reliability, showcasing robustness against environmental fluctuations. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

In the process of converter blowing production, the size of oxygen blowing is often related to the length of the end time of blowing. If the oxygen blowing is stopped too early, the reaction of the converter melt pool is not complete, which can easily cause the high C content of molten steel, and the oxygen blowing time is too long, which can easily lead to the phenomenon of steel burning. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the end time margin in the blowing process. In order to realize the accurate prediction of the time margin at the end of the converter blowing process, the collected flue gas data, the concentration percentage of CO and CO2, are fitted to the data by B-splines, and the first-order derivatives are extracted to complete the upgrading process of the data. Using the XGBoost model as a base model, the multi-strategy Improved Fox in Ear (IFFO) optimisation algorithm is used to optimise the hyperparameters of the model. Finally, the IFFO-XGBoost prediction model was constructed to predict the converter blowing end time margin. Comparing the prediction results of this model with those of other models IFFO-SVR and IFFO-LSTM, IFFO-XGBoost achieves good prediction results, MAE at 0.145 and RMSE at 0.106. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This paper focuses on the fault detection problem of local nonlinear fuzzy autonomous ground vehicles systems with disturbances by developing set membership estimation. The intractable influence of disturbances and local nonlinear part on the design of fault detection thresholds is the principal difficulty in fault detection using the existing set membership estimation methods. To this end, a fault detection unknown input observer via a novel joint peak-to-peak analysis and zonotopic analysis threshold is proposed. Firstly, the disturbances are divided into decouplable and non-decouplable parts. An unknown input observer, designed with peak-to-peak performance criteria, is employed to achieve the decoupling of the decouplable disturbance part. Subsequently, based on the dynamic structure of the observer, the local non-linear part is represented as polyhedra through peak-to-peak analysis and zonotopic analysis, thereby providing an interval estimation for the system output. his method utilizes zonotopic analysis to mitigate the over-estimation issue in the initial stage inherent in traditional peak-to-peak performance-based interval estimation techniques. Furthermore, it retains the necessary degrees of freedom during the decoupling process of certain disturbances to optimize the observer's performance. Consequently, this approach significantly enhances the accuracy of the interval estimation as compared to existing methods. Moreover, the peak-to-peak performance of fault detection unknown input observer is analysed using the fuzzy basis-dependent Lyapunov function to decrease the conservatism. Lastly, simulations are analysed in order to validate the accuracy of the proposed thresholds. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Dynamic Self-Triggered Control for Nonzero-Sum Games of Unknown Nonlinear Constrained Systems via Generalized Fuzzy Hyperbolic Models

In this article, a novel adaptive dynamic programming algorithm is devised to handle the multiplayer nonzero-sum (NZS) games of completely unknown nonlinear systems, subject to state and input constraints under the dynamic self-triggered mechanism. Initially, in order to eliminate the demand for system dynamics, a generalized fuzzy hyperbolic model based identifier is established, which only relies on input-output data. Then, the equivalent transformation of the reconstructed system is implemented by virtue of barrier functions. With the aid of the nonquadratic utility function, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of the NZS game is derived. After that, an adaptive critic scheme with experience replay is employed to acquire the Nash equilibrium solution. Furthermore, a novel dynamic self-triggered rule is proposed with the dead-zone operation, which not only significantly reduces source consumption but also overcomes the implementation difficulty of monitoring hardware in the event-triggered mechanism. Moreover, the stability of the system and the uniform ultimate boundedness of the critic weights are guaranteed. Ultimately, two simulation examples are given to validate the feasibility of the developed method. © 2025 IEEE.
