Mobile edge Large Language Model (LLM) deployments face inherent constraints, such as limited computational resources and network bandwidth. Although Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) mitigates some challenges by integrating external knowledge bases, inefficient cache management can still result in high retrieval latency and frequent cache updates. To address these issues, we propose an Adaptive Contextual Caching (ACC) framework that anticipates user needs by proactively caching semantically relevant data for mobile-edge LLMs. ACC utilizes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) module to refine cache replacement policies, balancing user context, document similarity, and the overhead associated with cache misses. Experimental results demonstrate that ACC increases cache hit rates to over 80% after only 11 training episodes, outperforming FIFO, LRU, and semantic-only caching while reducing retrieval latency by up to 40%. In particular, ACC also reduces local caching overhead (i.e., the cost of updating the cache when a miss occurs) by as much as 55%, enabling scalable, low-latency LLM services in resource-constrained edge environments. © 2025, CC BY.

Cooperative Mainstream Traffic Flow Control on Freeways

Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) is a freeway traffic control method which aims to maximize throughput by regulating the mainstream flow upstream from a bottleneck. Using Variable Speed Limits (VSL) as actuators for MTFC, we study the effects of different penetration rates of automated vehicles on MTFC-VSL. Automated vehicles can be designed to be much more strict in complying with VSL, which leads to a better MTFC performance than with ordinary VSL. Simulation results show that higher penetration rates translate into better performance with a significant effect up to 30% penetration rate, and very little gains beyond that; and that mixing forms of applying VSL may be detrimental to traffic. © 2016

Evolutionary algorithms are heuristic methods that have yielded promising results for solving nonlinear, nondifferentiable, and multi-modal optimization problems in the power systems area. The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm that uses a rather greedy and less stochastic approach to problem solving than do classical evolutionary algorithms, such as genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, and evolution strategies. DE also incorporates an efficient way of self-adapting mutation using small populations. The potentialities of DE are its simple structure, easy use, convergence property, quality of solution, and robustness. This paper proposes a new approach for solving economic load dispatch problems with valve-point effect. The proposed method combines the DE algorithm with the generator of chaos sequences and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) technique to optimize the performance of economic dispatch problems. The DE with chaos sequences is the global optimizer, and the SQP is used to fine-tune the DE run in a sequential manner. The combined methodology and its variants are validated for two test systems consisting of 13 and 40 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects. The proposed combined method outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in solving load dispatch problems with the valve-point effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work reports new Ni,Co-oxides based nanoparticles as electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER), considering the growing demand for renewable energy, as well as the search for sustainable alternatives in the production of nanoparticle materials. Ni,Co-based nanoparticles were obtained via proteic sol-gel method, with Agar-Agar from red seaweed (Rhodophyta) as polymerizing agent, and characterized by using X-ray diffraction techniques (including Rietveld refinement), Field emission scanning electron microscopy and vibrational spectroscopy (infrared and Raman). All structural analyses indicated that the crystalline phases NiO, Ni0.9Co0.1O and (Ni,Co)O-Co3O4 were obtained. Electrochemical techniques were applied to investigate the OER electrocatalytic performance, with the (Ni,Co)O-Co3O4 electrocatalyst showing the lowest overpotential (356 mV vs. RHE at J = 10 mA cm−2) and a Turnover Frequency (TOF) of 9.97 × 10−3 mol O2 s−1 at just 500 mV vs. RHE. Furthermore, all prepared electrocatalysts showed excellent chemical stability up to 15 h, as indicated in chronopotentiometry data. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The communication system is essential for the devices used in IoT. Nevertheless, the consumption caused by transmitting and receiving data is a concern in many scenarios. That is due to these devices commonly having limited energy and computational capacities. Transmission of redundant or irrelevant samples frequently wastes the device's resources. Furthermore, Storing a large amount of redundant data could consume storage space and not offer any benefit. Data Compression (DC) methods are a potential solution. DC could reduce communication usage and storage demand. This research proposes the Training Swing Door Trending (TSDT) for being implemented in IoT Devices. TSDT is a new algorithm that improves the classic Swing Door Trending (STD). They represent the data by trend lines and have a constant computational complexity. TSDT has a training step for the automatic configuration of its parameters. This article additionally presents the Compression Factor (C-Score), a new quality metric to analyze the compression results in lossy DC methods. C-Score takes as a basis the F-Score, a measure of predictive performance. The C-Score uses the Compression and Error metrics to evaluate the compression performance in Lossy Algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

In some applications, as part of a mobile agent mission, there may be the necessity of meeting a firm end-to-end deadline, although with some itinerary flexibility due to optional resources. This paper proposes an execution model based on the concept of imprecise mobile agents with timing constraints. In this paper it is considered an execution model where agents do not previously know their itineraries. The imprecise mobile agent may choose among alternative and/or optional resources. The objective is to propose and to evaluate heuristics to be used individually or in pairs by imprecise mobile agents that must accomplish a mission within a firm deadline. © 2008 - IOS Press and the authors. In this paper autotuning and self-tuning methods for Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC) are presented with application to single-input single-output (SISO) processes which can be approximated by a first-order-plus-dead-time model. In order to validate the method a nonlinear control valve system described by a Wiener process is simulated. This process was identified by a Hammerstein model and controlled by DMC with output compensator. The proposed tuning methods have its performance compared to another standard method found in literature, showing more conservative results regarding smoothness of the control action while maintaining adequate performance on set-point tracking. © IFAC.

The development of interoperability is more and more an essential task for all kinds of organizations. It needs to be measured, verified, and continuously improved. With the advent of the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, Digital Transformation, as well as all technologies it brings, such as big data, cloud computing, and mobile applications, this subject become quite ordinary and necessary, not only in a manufacturing scenario but also in a business process. As crucial benefits, it can bring possible gains for developers and users, also reduce the efforts to communicate multiple and different platforms. Like all new implementations, there are significant challenges that have to be overcome to allow satisfactory results. In this paper, after a systematic literature review to better understand the technologies and this new situation, we conduct a study involving a case in a business process, presenting some actions that can be executed and technologies that can be implemented to reach a well interoperable environment. For instance, to analyze the interoperability maturity level and to adopt ontologies as an alternative to integrate heterogeneous systems. Finally, in the last part of the paper, we give conclusions and perspectives for futures works. © 2021 The authors and IOS Press.

This paper addresses the problem of input-to-state stability (ISS) and stabilization of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) coupled with a system of homogeneous linear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) through the boundaries. First, a Lyapunov result characterizing the ISS property for finite-dimensional systems is extended to deal with coupled ODE and PDE systems. The proposed ISS condition is then applied to derive stability and stabilization conditions in terms of linear matrix inequality constraints assuming magnitude bounded disturbances at the boundaries. Two convex optimization problems are also proposed in order to obtain either an optimized reachable set estimate or a boundary controller that minimizes the disturbance effects on the L2 × R-norm of the system states. Numerical examples illustrate the potential of the proposed approach. © 2024 IEEE.

Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) with Variable Speed Limits (VSL) is a freeway traffic control method which aims to maximize throughput by regulating the mainstream flow upstream from a bottleneck. Recent studies in a macroscopic simulator have shown optimal and feedback MTFC potential to improve traffic conditions. In this paper, local feedback MTFC is applied in microscopic simulation for an on-ramp merge bottleneck. Traffic behavior reveals important aspects that had not been previously captured in macroscopic simulation. Mainly, the more realistic VSL application at specific points instead of along an entire freeway section produces a slower traffic response to speed limit changes. In addition, the nonlinear speed limit-flow relation observed in the microscopic model is more pronounced than what was observed at the macroscopic level. After appropriate modifications in the control law significant improvements in traffic conditions were obtained. © 2013 IEEE.
