Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms have been proposed to solve engineering problems that require to find an optimal point of operation. There are several embedded applications which requires to solve online optimization problems with a high performance. However, the PSO suffers on large execution times, and this fact becomes evident when using Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) microprocessors in which the operational frequencies are low in comparison with the high operational frequencies of traditional personal computers (PCs). This paper compares two hardware implementations of the parallel PSO algorithm using an efficient floating-point arithmetic which perform computations with large dynamic range and high precision. The full-parallel and the partially-parallel PSO architectures allow the parallel capabilities of the PSO to be exploited in order to decrease the running time. Three well-known benchmark test functions have been used to validate the hardware architectures and a comparison in terms of cost in logic area, quality of the solution and performance is reported. In addition, a comparison of the execution time between the hardware and two C-code software implementations, based on a Intel Core Duo at 1.6GHz and a embedded Microblaze microprocessor at 50MHz, are presented. © 2010 IEEE.

Synthesis of musical instruments or human voice is a time consuming process which requires theoretical and experimental knowledge about the synthesis engine. Commonly, performers need to deal with synthesizer interfaces and a process of trial and error for creating musical sounds similar to a target sound. This drawback can be overcome by adjusting automatically the synthesizer parameters using optimization algorithms. In this paper a hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to solve the frequency modulation (FM) matching synthesis problem. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of a shuffle process for exchanging information between particles and applies the selective passive congregation and the opposition-based learning approaches to preserve swarm diversity. Both approaches for injecting diversity are based on simple operators, preserving the easy implementation philosophy of the particle swarm optimization. The proposed hybrid particle swarm optimization algorithm was validated for a three-nested FM synthesizer, which represents a 6-dimensional multimodal optimization problem with strong epistasis. Simulation results revealed that the proposed algorithm presented promising results in terms of quality of solutions. © 2011 IEEE.

Artificial bee colony (ABC) is an optimization algorithm inspired on the intelligent behavior of honey bee swarms. It is suitable to be applied when mathematical techniques are impractical or provide suboptimal solutions. As a population-based algorithm, the ABC suffers on large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For that we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the opposition-based ABC algorithm (HPOABC) that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Numerical simulations using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity. Additionally, synthesis results point outs that the HPOABC architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes a control strategy consisting of a robust controller and an Echo State Network (ESN) based control law for stabilizing a class of uncertain nonlinear discrete-time systems subject to persistent disturbances. Firstly, the robust controller is designed to ensure that the closed-loop system is Input-to-State Stable (ISS) with a guaranteed stability region regardless of the ESN control action and exogenous disturbances. Then, the ESN-based controller is trained in order to mitigate the effects of disturbances on the system output. A numerical example demonstrates the potential of the proposed control design method.

The communication system is essential for the devices used in IoT. Nevertheless, the consumption caused by transmitting and receiving data is a concern in many scenarios. That is due to these devices commonly having limited energy and computational capacities. Transmission of redundant or irrelevant samples frequently wastes the device’s resources. Furthermore, Storing a large amount of redundant data could consume storage space and not offer any benefit. Data Compression (DC) methods are a potential solution. DC could reduce communication usage and storage demand. This research proposes the Training Swing Door Trending (TSDT) for being implemented in IoT Devices. TSDT is a new algorithm that improves the classic Swing Door Trending (STD). They represent the data by trend lines and have a constant computational complexity. TSDT has a training step for the automatic configuration of its parameters. This article additionally presents the Compression Factor (C-Score), a new quality metric to analyze the compression results in lossy DC methods. C-Score takes as a basis the F-Score, a measure of predictive performance. The C-Score uses the Compression and Error metrics to evaluate the compression performance in Lossy Algorithms.

This paper presents the context of the Ubiquitous Computing course carried out in an Industrial engineering undergraduate program throughout 2020 and the first semester of 2021. This course took advantage of the Institutional Modernization program led by the Control and automation engineering Undergraduate program, which consists in the modernization of undergraduate engineering programs at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná. The course aimed to help develop competencies, i.e., a set of knowledge, skills, and attributes aligned with Student Outcomes suggested by ABET. Also, the course proposal brought the productive sector very close to the academic environment, proposing real engineering problems as challenges. However, what are the methods and assessment tools for practical learning in a course with modern elements? This paper proposed the flipped learning and the Challenge-Based Learning Framework with the support of the CDIO Framework as learning methodologies to answer such question. Additionally, quizzes, tests, presentations, rubrics, and peer evaluation were applied as assessment tools to measure the student's progress. Finally, students were listened to about their perceptions during the course. The results suggested that the learning methodologies and assessment tools are suitable for the course context, although some improvements are expected for the following course offers. Moreover, students approved the initiative to bring in real challenges proposed by companies, the mentoring hours, and the feedback about the projects.

Artificial neural networks, in particular, feedforward multilayer networks and basis function networks, have gradually established themselves as a usual tool in approximating complex nonlinear systems. B-spline networks, a type of basis function neural network, are normally trained by gradient-based methods, which may fall into local minima during the learning phase. In order to overcome the drawbacks encountered by conventional learning methods, particle swarm optimization - a swarm intelligence methodology - can provide a stochastic global search of B-spline networks for nonlinear system identification. In this paper, a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm using Gaussian and Cauchy probability distributions are applied to adjust the control points of B-spline neural networks. Simulation results for the identification of Rossler systems are provided and demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed identification scheme.

This paper describes the application of differential evolution approaches to the optimization of a supply chain. Although simplified, this supply chain included stocks, production, transportation and distribution, in an integrated production-inventory-distribution system. The supply chain problem model is presented as well as a short introduction to each evolutionary algorithm. Differential evolution (DE) is an emergent evolutionary algorithm that offers three major advantages: it finds the global minimum regardless of the initial parameter values, it involves fast convergence, and it uses few control parameters. Inspired by the chaos theory, this work presents a new global optimization algorithm based on different DE approaches combined with chaotic sequences (DEC), called chaotic differential evolution algorithm. The performance of three evolutionary algorithm approaches (genetic algorithm, DE and DEC) and branch and bound method were evaluated with numerical simulations. Results were also compared with other similar approach in the literature. DEC was the algorithm that led to better results, outperforming previously published solutions. The simplicity and robustness of evolutionary algorithms in general, and the efficiency of DEC, in particular, suggest their great utility for the supply chain optimization problem, as well as other logistics-related problems.

The Internet of Things (IoT) devices have been identified to have low security measures by default, thus making them highly vulnerable to malicious attacks. Machine learning-based intrusion detection systems (IDS) are used to mitigate these attacks, however, there is a compromise in security and privacy of data ownership between IoT devices. This paper proposes a Federated Ensemble IDS (CNN-GRU and LSTM-GRU) for monitoring IoT network activities using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks that classifies the network as either normal or malicious. Two aggregation functions, including wFedAvg and wFedProx, are developed to create a global model from different clients’ contribution. We perform an evaluation of the proposed IDS on CICIoT2023 and FLNET2023 datasets. The results show that with wFedAvg, the CNN-GRU achieved an accuracy of 98.25% and 99.25% on the CICIoT2023 and FLNET2023 datasets respectively. Additionally, the LSTM-GRU model shows a detection accuracy of 93.36% and 95.66%, respectively on CICIoT2023 and FLNET2023 datasets. The performance shows that the proposed method is robust enough to enhancing the privacy of IoT devices.
