Task-free functional connectivity in animal models provides an experimental framework to examine connectivity phenomena under controlled conditions and allows for comparisons with data modalities collected under invasive or terminal procedures. Currently, animal acquisitions are performed with varying protocols and analyses that hamper result comparison and integration. Here we introduce StandardRat, a consensus rat functional magnetic resonance imaging acquisition protocol tested across 20 centers. To develop this protocol with optimized acquisition and processing parameters, we initially aggregated 65 functional imaging datasets acquired from rats across 46 centers. We developed a reproducible pipeline for analyzing rat data acquired with diverse protocols and determined experimental and processing parameters associated with the robust detection of functional connectivity across centers. We show that the standardized protocol enhances biologically plausible functional connectivity patterns relative to previous acquisitions. The protocol and processing pipeline described here is openly shared with the neuroimaging community to promote interoperability and cooperation toward tackling the most important challenges in neuroscience.

Cooperative Mainstream Traffic Flow Control on Freeways

Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) is a freeway traffic control method which aims to maximize throughput by regulating the mainstream flow upstream from a bottleneck. Using Variable Speed Limits (VSL) as actuators for MTFC, we study the effects of different penetration rates of automated vehicles on MTFC-VSL. Automated vehicles can be designed to be much more strict in complying with VSL, which leads to a better MTFC performance than with ordinary VSL. Simulation results show that higher penetration rates translate into better performance with a significant effect up to 30% penetration rate, and very little gains beyond that; and that mixing forms of applying VSL may be detrimental to traffic. © 2016

The purpose of this study was to investigate the features of muscle fatigue extracted from surface electromyography (sEMG) signals of lower limbs, and then to present an evaluation method of lower-limb rehabilitation to provide physical basis for the training effect of rehabilitation. Four healthy young university students were invited to perform a pedaling exercise for 40 days. The sEMG signals of four lower-limb muscles are recorded and processed using a Butterworth filter and a Daubechies 10 wavelet. Then, the change of the ratios of the spectrums of Types I and II muscle fibers to the total number of the spectrum along the exercise are examined. The time of the first intersection of the ratios for Types I and II for each muscle is used as a performance index. The increase in the time at the beginning and the end of the training period indicates the improvement of motor function, and thus it verifies the effectiveness of the rehabilitation.

Considering that distributed microgeneration systems are one of the most prominent trends in adding flexibility to the Brazilian energy matrix, regulation and certification standards become key players on providing well established interconnection procedures to the electrical power system, without degrading power quality and offering fair services to all institutions. Thus, this paper presents relevant information regarding to how the local interconnection procedures occur, as well as it presents different considerations on certification requirements for grid-tied inverters and PV modules available on the Brazilian market. Moreover, an overview of current constraints is raised, based on the comparison with other worldwide known standards and conditions for distributed energy systems.

Optimal Arrival Time Scheduling (OATS) is a strategy for intersection control in an environment of highly or fully automated vehicles previously developed by the authors. It schedules vehicle arrivals at the intersection with a Mixed Integer Linear program (MILP). OATS goal is to minimize vehicle delay at the intersection and its approaches while avoiding collisions. This goal is achieved by decomposing the coordination problem into the aforementioned MILP and three other subproblems. In this work, we extend the OATS strategy allowing for the modeling of any intersection layout and arbitrary speed profiles inside the intersection. Simulation results confirm that the strategy is able to perform adequately in realistic traffic intersections. © 2016 IEEE.

Soil Stratification methods are used to estimate soil geoelectrical parameters. Several stratification methods are available, but reducing the error estimation introduced by such methods still poses as a challenge. The purpose of this work is to present a heuristic algorithm applied to the optimization of geoelectrical prospection process. The goal is to estimate soil parameters, such as the amount of layers, thickness and resistivity of each layer in an optimal and automated manner. The algorithm consists of analyzing the sensitivity of sampling space parameters. The propose methodology shows error reduction above 75% between the experimental and theoretical curves of the analyzed soils. The results are presented and discussed. © 2016 IEEE.

The purpose of this paper is to use the hybridized optimization method in order to find mathematical structures for analysis of experimental data. The heuristic optimization method will be hybridized with deterministic optimization method in order to that structures found require not knowledge about data generated experimentally. Three case studies are proposed and discussed to validate the results. The proposed method has viable solution for the analysis of experimental data and extrapolation, with mathematical expression reduced. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper proposes a multiobjective optimization technique that maximizes the active power generation from single-phase distributed generators, and minimizes the unbalance factor at the point of common coupling of the network. Such technique is incorporated into a centralized control strategy for optimal power flow control purpose. The centralized control strategy used herein is the Power-Based Control that coordinates the distributed units to contribute to the network's active and reactive power needs, per phase, in proportion of their power capacity. The simulation results of a simplified network with three single-phase distributed generators validate the proposal in terms of power flow control, voltage regulation and power quality.

The objective of this work is to investigate the influence of slotted air gap constructive parameters on magnetic flux density of rotating machines. For this purpose, different approaches were used to solve the air gap field diagram using finite element method and the magnetic field distribution uniformity was evaluated by Carter's factor calculation. Sensitivity analysis of slot constructive parameters was performed and results show that slot geometry modifies the magnetic flux on air gap and shifts the air gap magnetic equipotential midline of double slotted machines. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper deals with the computation of ground resistance, surface voltage, touch voltage and step voltage, to mesh with horizontal wires arranged in different angles. The computer program implemented used in the mathematical modeling is based on the method proposed by Heppe, which allows obtaining the grounding parameters for homogeneous soil and soil stratified in two layers. The results obtained with the proposed method will be compared with other methods in literature. Also will be presented the results of a grounding grid using wires at various angles. © 2016 IEEE.
