Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) refers to the use of AI to automate the information creation process while fulfilling the personalized requirements of users. However, due to the instability of AIGC models, e.g., the stochastic nature of diffusion models, the quality and accuracy of the generated content can vary significantly. In wireless edge networks, the transmission of incorrectly generated content may unnecessarily consume network resources. Thus, a dynamic AIGC service provider (ASP) selection scheme is required to enable users to connect to the most suited ASP, improving the users’ satisfaction and quality of generated content. In this article, we first review the AIGC techniques and their applications in wireless networks. We then present the AIGC-as-a-service (AaaS) concept and discuss the challenges in deploying AaaS at the edge networks. Yet, it is essential to have performance metrics to evaluate the accuracy of AIGC services. Thus, we introduce several image-based perceived quality evaluation metrics. Then, we propose a general and effective model to illustrate the relationship between computational resources and user-perceived quality evaluation metrics. To achieve efficient AaaS and maximize the quality of generated content in wireless edge networks, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-enabled algorithm for the optimal ASP selection. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide a higher quality of generated content to users and achieve fewer crashed tasks by comparing with four benchmarks, i.e., overloading-avoidance, random, round-robin policies, and the upper-bound schemes. © 2023, CC BY.

Water hyacinth has become widespread in freshwater bodies in several countries, leading to various issues, particularly its substantial water consumption and the resulting need to control its growth. Among the different methods of controlling water hyacinth, mechanical control stands out as the most effective and environmentally friendly approach. A proposed harvester robot has been developed, capable of efficiently cutting and collecting water hyacinth from the water's surface. The robot boasts several advantages, including its ability to operate in narrow water paths and lakes, use clean energy sources to preserve the water ecology, employ a GPS module for safety and error detection, and generate maps for evaluating work and predicting annual growth. When compared to other technologies dealing with water hyacinth, this innovative water hyacinth harvesting robot presents a significantly lower cost of 0.01 $/kg, making it an optimal solution for addressing water hyacinth problems.

As Metaverse emerges as the next-generation Internet paradigm, the ability to efficiently generate content is paramount. AI-Generated Content (AIGC) emerges as a key solution, yet the resource-intensive nature of large Generative AI (GAI) models presents challenges. To address this issue, we introduce an AIGC-as-a-Service (AaaS) architecture, which deploys AIGC models in wireless edge networks to ensure broad AIGC services accessibility for Metaverse users. Nonetheless, an important aspect of providing personalized user experiences requires carefully selecting AIGC Service Providers (ASPs) capable of effectively executing user tasks, which is complicated by environmental uncertainty and variability. Addressing this gap in current research, we introduce the AI-Generated Optimal Decision (AGOD) algorithm, a diffusion model-based approach for generating the optimal ASP selection decisions. Integrating AGOD with Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), we develop the Deep Diffusion Soft Actor-Critic (D2SAC) algorithm, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of ASP selection. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate that D2SAC outperforms seven leading DRL algorithms. Furthermore, the proposed AGOD algorithm has the potential for extension to various optimization problems in wireless networks, positioning it as a promising approach for future research on AIGC-driven services. This paper presents the context of the Ubiquitous Computing course carried out in an Industrial engineering undergraduate program throughout 2020 and the first semester of 2021. This course took advantage of the Institutional Modernization program led by the Control and automation engineering Undergraduate program, which consists in the modernization of undergraduate engineering programs at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná. The course aimed to help develop competencies, i.e., a set of knowledge, skills, and attributes aligned with Student Outcomes suggested by ABET. Also, the course proposal brought the productive sector very close to the academic environment, proposing real engineering problems as challenges. However, what are the methods and assessment tools for practical learning in a course with modern elements? This paper proposed the flipped learning and the Challenge-Based Learning Framework with the support of the CDIO Framework as learning methodologies to answer such question. Additionally, quizzes, tests, presentations, rubrics, and peer evaluation were applied as assessment tools to measure the student's progress. Finally, students were listened to about their perceptions during the course. The results suggested that the learning methodologies and assessment tools are suitable for the course context, although some improvements are expected for the following course offers. Moreover, students approved the initiative to bring in real challenges proposed by companies, the mentoring hours, and the feedback about the projects.

Energy-efficient knowledge distillation for spiking Neural Networks

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have been gaining interest as energy-efficient alternatives of conventional artificial neural networks (ANNs) due to their event-driven computation. Considering the future deployment of SNN models to constrained neuromorphic devices, many studies have applied techniques originally used for ANN model compression, such as network quantization, pruning, and knowledge distillation, to SNNs. Among them, existing works on knowledge distillation reported accuracy improvements of student SNN model. However, analysis on energy efficiency, which is also an important feature of SNN, was absent. In this paper, we thoroughly analyze the performance of the distilled SNN model in terms of accuracy and energy efficiency. In the process, we observe a substantial increase in the number of spikes, leading to energy inefficiency, when using the conventional knowledge distillation methods. Based on this analysis, to achieve energy efficiency, we propose a novel knowledge distillation method with heterogeneous temperature parameters. We evaluate our method on two different datasets and show that the resulting SNN student satisfies both accuracy improvement and reduction of the number of spikes. On MNIST dataset, our proposed student SNN achieves up to 0.09% higher accuracy and produces 65% less spikes compared to the student SNN trained with conventional knowledge distillation method. With recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, unmanned vehicle swarms have received great attention from both academia and industry due to their potential to provide services that are difficult and dangerous to perform by humans. However, learning and coordinating movements and actions for a large number of unmanned vehicles in complex and dynamic environments introduce significant challenges to conventional AI methods. Generative AI (GAI), with its capabilities in complex data feature extraction, transformation, and enhancement, offers great potential in solving these challenges of unmanned vehicle swarms. For that, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey on applications, challenges, and opportunities of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms. Specifically, we first present an overview of unmanned vehicles and unmanned vehicle swarms as well as their use cases and existing issues. Then, an in-depth background of various GAI techniques together with their capabilities in enhancing unmanned vehicle swarms are provided. After that, we present a comprehensive review on the applications and challenges of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms with various insights and discussions. Finally, we highlight open issues of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms and discuss potential research directions. © 2024, CC BY.

Understanding the evolution of cooperation in structured populations represented by networks is a problem of long research interest, and a most fundamental and widespread property of social networks related to cooperation phenomena is that the node’s degree (i.e., number of edges connected to the node) is heterogeneously distributed. Previous results indicate that static heterogeneous (i.e., degree-heterogeneous) networks promote cooperation in stationarity compared to static regular (i.e., degree-homogeneous) networks if equilibrium dynamics starting from many cooperators and defectors is employed. However, the above conclusion reverses if we employ non-equilibrium stochastic processes to measure the fixation probability for cooperation, i.e., the probability that a single cooperator successfully invades a population. Here we resolve this conundrum by analyzing the fixation of cooperation on temporal (i.e., time-varying) networks. We theoretically prove and numerically confirm that on both synthetic and empirical networks, contrary to the case of static networks, temporal heterogeneous networks can promote cooperation more than temporal regular networks in terms of the fixation probability of cooperation. Given that the same conclusion is known for the equilibrium fraction of cooperators on temporal networks, the present results provide a unified understanding of the effect of temporal degree heterogeneity on promoting cooperation across two main analytical frameworks, i.e., equilibrium and non-equilibrium ones. Driven by advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and algorithms, the widespread adoption of AI-generated content (AIGC) has emerged, allowing for the generation of diverse and high-quality content. Especially, the diffusion model-based AIGC technique has been widely used to generate content in a variety of modalities. However, the real-world implementation of AIGC models, particularly on resource-constrained devices such as mobile phones, introduces significant challenges related to energy consumption and privacy concerns. To further promote the realization of ubiquitous AIGC services, we propose a novel collaborative distributed diffusion-based AIGC framework. By capitalizing on collaboration among devices in wireless networks, the proposed framework facilitates the efficient execution of AIGC tasks, optimizing edge computation resource utilization. Furthermore, we examine the practical implementation of the denoising steps on mobile phones, the impact of the proposed approach on the wireless network-aided AIGC landscape, and the future opportunities associated with its real-world integration. The contributions of this paper not only offer a promising solution to the existing limitations of AIGC services but also pave the way for future research in device collaboration, resource optimization, and the seamless delivery of AIGC services across various devices.
